Dor is the story of Avani. Avani is the eldest child in her family that comprises of her mother, two younger sisters and a younger brother. Her mother Kaveri has been deserted by her father, who is not traceable. Speaking about Avani's father in house is a taboo. Further, Avani is also the only earning member in the family and the house runs on her meager income from her employment in a construction company. Her younger sister Abha is about to finish college and is mature and responsible.

Subsequently, there is Manohar, her younger brother, who is a dimwitted unemployed laggard and a good for nothing fellow. Lastly there is the youngest sister Aditi, a college student, who is a gullible child at heart and yet to come of age. Avani is running her household and even living her life to support her family.

The series deals with the trials and tribulations of Avani and her struggles. The story is about the urge to survive and persevere, the womanly resilience and forgiveness, audacity in adversity, and victory of human spirit are the predominant emotions in Avani's tale.

Avani is the protagonist of the story who is a sincere assistant to her boss. She is hard working, honest and a responsible girl. She is the sole breadwinner for her family. She displays her vulnerability at times, though mostly she is calm and composed, fighting this male dominated world against all odds. She is feminine yet has adapted to the circumstances befallen her family and is functioning as good as, or even better than, the eldest son in the family.

She has no time for romance in her life forever since her father deserted them; she has been toiling to save the family, first studies and now the job. She is honest and straightforward with values, and at the same time is gullible. Hence she is vulnerable to traps laid by crooked and treacherous people.

Kaveri
is a doting mother who has struggled to bring up her family after her husband deserted her. Through her hard work and pains, Avani has started earning now and has also come of age. She is a traditional woman who believes in values often termed 'old fashioned' in modern world, such as a woman needs to play a second fiddle to her husband, or the bride's side always need to be mellowed and subdued. Consequently she even has excess affection for her good for nothing son Manohar, just because he is the only male progeny.

Abha is a mature girl, comparatively better than Avani in terms of being worldly wise. She is very protective of her family, Aditi in particular so that the struggle of her mother and hard work of Avani doesn't go futile.  Her protective instinct gets the better of her on quite a few occasions when she comes across as a short-tempered girl. She is intelligent and always supports well-informed decision-making.

Further, her sense of responsibility is only second to that of Avani's. In fact, she is taking up a part time job in order to support the family when Avani gets married, in spite of Avani's conditions to support her family even after marriage. She is the one who maintains vigil over Aditi's activities and is also sensitive enough to notice and infer from the reactions of Avani's prospective in-laws to her conditions.

Aditi comes across as an immature and gullible young girl. She has a lot of desires unfulfilled because of penury in their household. However, she still has not got the maturity to control the urge of possession of such desirable stuff that symbolizes luxury and prosperity. She is talkative and verbose.
