1. Akshay Kumar 2005 belonged to Akshay Kumar. He succeeded in all kinds of roles -- be it as the emotional son in Waqt: The Race Against Time, the jilted lover in Bewafaa or the comical Casanova in Garam Masala. Akki's getting so good at making people laugh, he is on his way to becoming the next Comedy King. Watch Mujhse Shaadi Karogi again to know what I mean!

At 38, this actor's career has just begun.

2. Saif Ali Khan Dil Chahta Hai gave Saif's career a new lease of life. Parineeta and Salaam Namaste consolidated his position among the top stars. After Hum Tum last year, Saif proved he doesn't need another actor to lean on; that he can carry a film on his shoulders alone.

And the line of producers and directors outside his home has multiplied manifold.

3. Abhishek Bachchan Like his dad, Abhishek took his time to be successful. And like his pa, Abhi may be a certified superstar. The bad times seem to be behind him as he churned out hit after hit this year in Bunty Aur Babli, Sarkar and Dus.

Besides, he is working with all the right people -- Yash Chopra's Dhoom 2 and Fanaah, mentor J P Dutta's Umrao Jaan and Karan Johar's Kabhi Alvida Na Kehna.

4. Amitabh Bachchan In a list of Best Actors, can we ever leave out Mr Bachchan? After all, he is the busiest 63 year old in the movie universe. Hsis list of movies this year seems endless. Take a look -- Black, Waqt: The Race Against Time, Bunty Aur Babli, Sarkar, Paheli, Virrudh, Dil Jo Bhi Kahey, Ek Ajnabee and Family. And not to forget his very popular television game show, Kaun Banega Crorepati 2.

The megastar had virtually the entire nation on its knees when he underwent surgery in November. Happily his condition has improved, and we hope to see him on television and on the big screen soon.

5. John Abraham John achieved star status after he rode into glory with Sanjay Gadhvi's Dhoom last year. This year, his hits (Kaal, Garam Masala) increased. But John also wanted critical acclaim, so he starred in Deepa Mehta's Water.

John may have started his film career late (he was 31 when he made his debut in 2003), but he's here to stay. And that's reason enough for India's ladies to cheer.

6. Salman Khan Even as Sallu continues to court controversy -- this year's low point was the release of bizarre telephonic conversations allegedly featuring the star and then love Aishwarya Rai -- his movies do better and better at the box office. His No Entry is this year's biggest grosser. And it's all thanks to Salman, who has a little more than a guest role in the film. He also romanced real life girlfriend Katrina Kaif on screen -- in Maine Pyaar Kyun Kiya -- but that didn't deter loyal female fans from crowding the theatres.

7. Sanjay Dutt Abu Salem or not, Sanju has always been a darling of the masses. While he may not have had an exceptional 2005, Dus and Parineeta made up for the filmi mistakes he made. His final release of the year -- Mahesh Manjrekar's Vaah! Life Ho To Aisi -- sees him as a modern Yamraj, the Hindu God of death. Sanju and Mahesh hope to recreate their Vaastav success with Vaah!.... The promos for Sanjay Gupta's Zinda also look interesting.

8. Shah Rukh Khan SRK had only one release in 2005 -- Amol Palekar's Paheli. While the film was colourful and had its share of moments, it was declared a flop. But all is not lost. Paheli was selected as India's nominee for the Golden Globes as well as the Academy Awards. It lost out on the first, but hopes are pinned on the Oscars.

Will SRK do what Aamir Khan couldn't with Lagaan in 2002?

9. Emraan Hashmi There are two things Emraan is known for -- kissing his heroines and featuring in chartbusters. It's the latter that qualifies him for his list. Of the year's five most popular songs, Emraan features in two -- Ashiq Banaya Aapne (Aashiq Banaya Aapne) and Woh Lamhe (Zeher).

A film featuring Emraan with no hit songs seems unlikely. Maybe that's why even a guest role in uncle Mahesh Bhatt's Kalyug has him singing a peppy track that could become yet another nightclub favourite.

10. Boman Irani

Boman has arrived, and how!

He bowled audiences over with characters like Dr Asthana (Munnabhai MBBS), the school principal (Main Hoon Na) and Michael Burnett (Home Delivery).

Displaying huge acting talent, this onetime photographer has a lot more laughs to offer.
