Chapter Seven:
Later that week, Mr. Bhushan decided to send Nupur to his sister in-law's place, Ms. Kapoor. Ms. Kapoor was an unmarried woman of forty-two and was really fond of all the Bhushan daughters, particularly the two eldest.
While Mrs. Bhushan was indifferent to both Gunjan and Nupur's sudden change of behavior, Mr. Bhushan realized that something had gone wrong and the best he could do for Nupur was to send her away however, Gunjan was a strong-willed young lady who wanted stay there and fix the turmoil herself. As for Nupur, the idea of fighting back seemed beyond remote.
'Darling, don't you want to attend your convocation?' asked Ms. Kapoor, Nupur's Maasi handing over a package to her. 'It's from Gunjan,' she added.
'Thanks Maasi, I had been waiting for this.' She said, smiling at her.
'I repeat ' Don't you want to attend your convocation?'
'No Maasi, I don't. I know my grade, then why do I have to go back to Delhi?'
'As you wish, sweetheart,' she replied. 'I head to my office now, see you in the evening.'
Maasi squeezed her hand while Nupur looked at her with gratefulness in her eyes, and a tear rolling down her dried cheeks. It had been happening everyday since over a month and both of them had gotten used to it.
'We're gonna have Chinese tonight, my treat.' Maasi shouted from outside before finally slamming the door and heading to the parking lot.
Nupur was just about to open the package, when she heard the ring of the doorbell. She heaved a sigh and pushed forth her feet to the door. Her jaw almost dropped when she saw the people right in front of her eyes. Gunjan and Dia. She had gotten into the habit of crying lately, and started to sob fat, salty tears again on seeing her sisters after ages.
'Let us in, it's burning hot out here.' Dia foreboded.

After Dia was let in, at last, the sister's had a pretty long conversation. Dia spoke most. Seems like a good start, thought Nupur and cherished every second she spent with her sisters.
The girls went for stroll at about five in the evening, when it had gotten pleasant and a soft wind blew allover. 'What a beautiful weather!' exclaimed Gunjan.
'We're toward the greener side of the city, so the weather here is comparatively less hot than the commercial area.' Nupur explained.
They walked along the streets, visited the central park and were on their way back home when Dia looked about in monotony. What am I doing here? She thought when she finally spotted something of interest.
'Are they Maasi's neighbors?' she asked Nupur, checking out two hunky fellows standing and conversing at the other side of the lane.
'I suppose,' she replied. 'But ' I don't think I have seen the dusky tall guy, around.' She added.
'Good gracious! He's a hunk of a guy and you haven't seen him, like ever?' Dia cross-examined in disbelief.
'Maybe, he's new or hasn't been out, lately?' protested Gunjan, on behalf of her sister.
While Nupur and Gunjan exchanged glances and Nupur thanked Gunjan to have cut off a just-about-to-start argument halfway, Dia crossed the lane and in hurry.
'She's in action now, we better get inside.' joked Gunjan.
Nupur replied in a nod and kept herself busy in noticing the dusky tall guy. She could witness all his moves from the distance, his manner seemed pleasant and he seemed to be taking Dia's flirting really politely, although he wouldn't reciprocate.
Gunjan had to pat Nupur's shoulder endlessly to bring her out of the reverie. When she finally did succeed, both the girls found the guys with Dia heading toward them.
'This is David,' Dia introduced the guy standing to her right. 'And this is Rannvijay.' She added.
'My name is Nupur, and this is my elder sister Gunjan.' Nupur was all smiles.
'Di, can we call them over for dinner?' Dia cribbed.
'We'll have to ask Maasi first, Dia.' Gunjan replied, very matter of fact-ly.
The girls bid adieu to their newly acquainted neighbors and were about to enter the house when they heard something, probably a car make a hoarse and loud sound. They turned around and saw a Bentley, black-colored rolled to a halt and a person stepping out of the driver's seat.
All three of them were stunned to see him, Samrat Shergill. He seemed much weaker, thinner and dull. Gunjan failed to make out the old charm in his face.
'MAYANK, your wonder car has got us stuck, again!' he squealed and gave the girls another shock, Mayank Sharma was there too. He jumped out of the car and kicked the tire hard.
'What do we do now?' he asked.
'How would I bloody know? UGH!'
Rannvijay was the first person to offer help out of all the people standing there. At first Nupur smiled at his gesture however later, she quite did not understand what was between Mayank Sharma and him. Rannvijay, who seemed exceedingly amiable now tried his best to ignore Mayank while Mayank, behaved as coldly as possible.
Soon, the two friends noticed the presence of the Bhushan sisters and most pleasingly, greeted them. Gunjan behaved civilly however the pain and hatred could be seen through her eyes. Nupur remained indifferent for, actually nothing at the moment made a difference to her. And on the other hand, their youngest sister seemed to be a misfit in the group and hence decided to watch Rannvijay fix the car and drool over him some more.
Soon, the party was joined by Maasi. Maasi, who'd never seen Samrat before realized that the other fellow was her ex-student, Mayank Sharma! 'Mayank Sharma, is that you?' she exclaimed.
Mayank who had his eyes fixed on Nupur's face now turned his glance toward Ms. Kapoor whom he recognized in a second. 'Kapoor Ma'am, what a pleasant surprise!' They shook hands and looked pleased to have met each other after a really long time.
Ms. Kapoor taught accounts at the Excel College, before she switched to finance. She had taught Mayank for three years and he was one of the best students she had, while Mayank had always considered her his favorite teacher.

Just about everything that happened outside the house was a little too much for Nupur to digest. First ' she couldn't take her eyes of Rannvijay, she had no idea why. Second ' Maasi knew Mayank Sharma. Third ' Along with the new neighbors, Mayank Sharma and Samrat Shergill had been invited to their place for Dinner that night.
It was nearly nine, and Nupur still was not ready. Her room was the first on the way to the dining room where all the guests were supposed to be seated and she did not realize that she had left the door open. In her hand, she held a few pictures.
It was his sister's wedding, and we were seventeen. We were in his room, that night and just about to kiss when Dia sneaked in and almost gave me a heart attack...
I had never before seen him so nervous. It was Diwali and we had our Hindi test the next day. I clicked this picture and uploaded it on FaceBook! He was s-oooo-oo mad at me...
And this! He had almost killed Gunjan to have caught him like that staring at me. That night, I couldn't sleep due to the pain in my tummy of all the laughter...
His very first day to college and he was busy showing off his new hair style!
And this was the last picture I could click of him, the very la-s-s-t-t picture. North Campus Yearly Festival' 08 . . . . . . .
Armaan. . .
Nupur was brought back to reality with her Maasi's shouting. 'Be ready in five, Nupur.'

She wiped of her tears and picked up a dress to wear from the wardrobe. In just about two minutes, she was out clad in a pink salwar-kameez. She had braided her hair that evening and did not open it up and adjust her hair, she just head to the kitchen in order to help Maasi and Gunjan.
She walked slowly, as slowly as she could. She was pained and did not wish to conceal it, maybe that way she would have been given some more time alone. However, at that moment ' she could feel the warmth of his hands again. She could hear his whispers and she could sense his presence around. She looked about and struggled in vain, but as she proceeded further ' she could sense his feet marching along with her.
He's back again, Armaan is back. She thought and rejoiced, for now she had his pictures, the only way she could relive the moments she'd spent with him.
She joined her Maasi and sister in the kitchen and helped them with the things. Gunjan set the dining table and Nupur put the dishes in the serving bowls while Maasi could finally go and change.
Dia hurried down the staircase and looked about as if, inspecting the whole area. 'Everything is ready, Madame.' Taunted Gunjan and slightly slapped her in the face. As soon as the expected ouchieee was uttered, the elders had to mimic Dia; it had been their thing since childhood.
While Gunjan and Nupur were still in peels of laughter, Dia heard the doorbell ring and head straight to the door in order to welcome the guests.
'Ouchieee, man . . . I still remember how Dia used to squeak as a kid when one of us squished her, and we used to exchange SMSes over this with Amy and every weekend, he would come down with a new ouchieee joke. We would have like a dozen new jokes on this every week and compete with each other. He would always win, aah!' Nupur recollected, still laughing her lungs out.
'Armaan Malik, man what a happy fellow! We've all spent our childhoods together; it was so much fun back then.'
Gunjan had nearly begun her story, when she and her sister realized the presence of the guests in the premises.
'Cut it out, sisters!' Dia requested, looking embarrassed.
The ouchieee thing would always embarrass her and seeing her cheeks turn crimson, Gunjan and Nupur broke into laughter again. Samrat made his way to the lobby to get himself a magazine while Mayank stood there, with his eyes fixed on Nupur, like always.
He was overwhelmed to have met with her again. He hadn't heard much of her lately, and longed to see her. Every night he would struggle in bed, thinking of her. Whenever he would be free, he would find himself reflecting on his last meeting with her and how she'd totally gotten depressed by the end. And that day, when he happened to meet her after over a month by such profound a coincidence, he made out the same, familiar depression again. The only difference was ' she did not hide it any longer. He could see pain through her eyes even when she was laughing so much that she had to hold onto her sister's arm so that she did not fall.
Things just seemed wrong, and he desperately wanted to make out what bothered her so much. Also, he was aware of her noticing the coldness between him and Rannvijay Rathore that evening but at that moment, what he wanted was to sneak into her past and discover what bothered her. Maybe the fellow they were talking about?
