Maan's bitterness regarding women and relationship

There is a lot of speculation about Maan's past. While everyone agrees that there is something in his past which has made him what he is in the present, there is no unanimity in what it could be. While some feel it is to do with a former girlfriend/fiance others feel it is to do with his mother. From what I have seen so far, I feel that it is to do with his mother. This is what might have happened.

Maan may have been very attached to his mother. His mother could have been the typical Indian housewife, very docile and family oriented. His father may have fallen for Dev's mother, who was his employee and may have ill-treated his wife. Young Maan may have witnessed his mother taking everything silently and doing nothing about it but shed tears (the reason why he hates tears).

When Dev's mother got pregnant with him, Maan's mother could not take it any longer and first runs away from the house and later commits suicide. Maan is shattered and feels betrayed by his mother. He feels that she was a coward who did not face up to the problems and took the easy way out. He wanted her to stand up for herself but she didn't and instead left him motherless. Maybe this is why he got angry when inspite of his telling Geet to go against her brother and stand up for herself, she backed out (at least that is what he thinks). He hates it when he sees Geet give up because it is this defeatist mentality which had robbed him of his mother. He thinks all women are weak and untrustworthy. So he has locked the door to his heart till Geet came and forced it open. He is still trying to push the door shut but is slowly losing control as we see day by day.

Does this explanation for his weird behaviour appear plausible?

Its a very interesting observation and definitely a plausible one.

I agree that his misogynist (This sounds little extreme but using it for the lack of better word) tendencies would have started much earlier in life. And its also highly probable that Geet is a good reflection of the most important woman in his life - his mother. The women who came in his life as an adult would be someone who would fit his world and total contrast to the profile of the woman who suffered right in front of his eyes. But it would not have ended in a good note. His grandmother mentions it one of the episode - "...find love again..."

But after reading your post, I feel that the statement can be interpreted in both ways - a woman in his life or his mother herself. There might have been lack of nurturing from his mother given her condition which may be the reason why he lacks empathy.

I do not agree that lack of empathy can stem from being disappointed in love. It takes much complex and fundamental relationship to destroy something so humane. So, it might be the lack of happiness he felt as a child and the lack of love from his own parents.

His mother's perpetual depression might also be the cause why he dislikes emotions so much. If he had witnessed a permanently emotionally strung woman who goes on emotional roller coaster rides quite often, he would have started to hate the whole being emotional thing right from the start and it is definitely not a development in his adult life.

Also, there is another side to the way he is with his brother. There is a protective tendency which comes being a big brother, of course. But he almost gives off a vibe of being the caretaker. It would be possible that he protected Dev from the very beginning from something they both feared. It could have been a common enemy or their own father. It is very hard to point out an exact instance where this is seen or I may be even misreading the situation.

The character development of Maan has been consistent till date and I hope the past he has answers his current behavior.

great prediction!!

My thought was that maybe Maan's parents were always fighting and more interested in wealth than the children..so he never received properly love as a child, and then his parents fell in love w/other ppl so his mom just left him and his dad married dev's mom and ignored maan in the process...but dadi took care of maan!! I guess maan from a young age had to learn to self-survive and take care of himself b/c no one would take care of him or love him! That's why he closed his heart to ppl and he's always angry. That's probably also why he doesn't understand that what he's feeling for geet is love....b/c he's never loved or been loved!

i loved the way u explained it..but there is something that i didn't see u addressed..if maan's father brought in dev's mom as the second woman, and ill treated his mom coz of it, maan would have every reason to hate the new woman in his father's life. But that is not so. we have seen pammi calling maan to first see if he's ok n then when he paid maan's debts..he sort of respects her, which is evident in the tone he uses with her. No negative emotions are present between them..at least that's what it seemed to me like. And plus if pammi and dev replaced maan's mom, he would hate his brother too, which again is not so.
The part about Maan's father ill-treatin his mom and the fact that she tolerated everything could be very probable. Maybe something happened to his mom (like suicide) and then his father married pammi to take care of maan. And as u said, it is possible that pammi was his employee coz she doesn't have the sort of aristrocratic elegance that is present in daadi and was possibly present in maan's mom..she's more like a lady from a village..

to add to what you all have said.
dev's mother calls him chote saab..so yes..it could be nanny turned...step mom..

maan's hatred for women to me seems like abhorrence to weakness which is represented by women..
his many reference to teary women
his reference to dependence
his reference to being subservient

he sees women as epitome of being weak and he therefore wants to stay away....

I have not watched the show from the beginning. In fact I had started watching only after Geet landed in Delhi. The past in hoshiarpur I have only seen in bits and pieces. So dont know how Maan addressed Pammi. What you say could be true.
There is definitely something in his past which makes Maan think that all women are weak, emotional fools. Now if he had a girlfriend who betrayed him, that would not explain this notion. He would be under the impression that women are cunning rather than foolish. That is why I think his behaviour is woven with his dead mother who could have been suffering everything because she felt that was her destiny and when she could not take it she may have ended her life.
I still dont get it why Dev, his mom and his sister were in Canada while Maan and his Daadi are in India. Niantara too seems to be a Canadian citizen from what Dev said. Did Dev and his mom and sister move to Canada after Maan's father's death? Did Dev's mom marry another man from Canada and moved there with her son and later delivered her daughter, through that man? This could explain why Dev's sister's picture is not among the photographs in Maan's house as she is Dev's sister and not Maan's. For that matter I dont recollect seeing pictures of Pammi too. Maybe Maan's grandmother never accepted Pammi.
