Hey guys, this is my first post here im Jhanvi 🤗
OKay so I had question about this entire caste problem
I haven't seen any episodes of YPNHK yet but I got super interested after I saw a VM on it
In the description of the serial it says that the families have a problem w/ the relation because the boy is bhramin and the girl is kayastha... aren't they related on totally different levels?
Ironically I am a Kayastha girl and I was born in Lucknow
From what I've heard and read that Brahmin's fit in the religious caste group and Kayastha's are in the socio-economical caste group...they are in now way below or above one another..so how are they being compared in this serial?
I just want to know more about the caste system that is thought out in India becasue where I live now there is very little attention that is given to caste and it'll be perfectly normal if one hindu marries another hindu w/o looking at their caste...
I know in India there are many places still whre the caste system is still being regarded when it comes to matrimonal things, but I just wanted to know how does it work//with the leveling and all...
kk, ill stop rambling now :)

Oooh, great question, I wish I knew more about this as well.
As far as I know the serial story based in Lucknow caste differences are very common and a big thing for families--- and also the story based of Abeer and Leher caste difference is based on that part of a true story from the writer Rajita sharma said was based on her parents lovestory.

From what I'm aware of the show so far.....

Abeer's family is a very conservative and rigid Brahmin family for the most part....especially his father and his grandmother....his mother and his sister are more relaxed....His grandmother is the one that makes the biggest deal out of this caste difference and stuff like that.....she is smug about her superiority as a Brahmin.....

Leher's family on the other hand isn't that rigid about customs and caste issues....her father and mother especially are much more broad minded....they had a love marriage....however her chacha is a pretty khadoos sort of guy who dislikes Abeer's family as well.....Generally speaking, Leher's parents like Abeer as a person but are wary of his family and the drama created by his grandmother all the time.....

The families also share an issue of a common wall b/w their houses that is a major dispute b/w them for some reason....I'm not very clear on why....but it has led to Leher's chacha Kul and Abeer's father fighting in the streets once.

To answer your original question....I think caste issues do crop up in India to a large extent still....Brahmins are considered the highest of classes and Kayasths are considered relatively lower on that scale probably cuz of them falling in the socio-economic group as you said....throughout India, the priestly castes like Brahmins are given a higher standing based on the caste system as far as I'm aware....it might be varying slightly from region to region.....

The country may have progressed on a general level but such mindsets do still exist...and especially when it comes to marriages...intercaste marriages are frowned upon almost as much as inter-religious marriages I think.....

From what they've shown in this show.....Brahmins are strict vegetarians while Kayasths do eat meat and eggs....so little things like this are also a bone of contention....especially for Abeer's daadi who considers herself way too 'pure' and much above a Kayasth family like that of Leher.

Caste is a big deal in Northern Indian, esp. in UP. And its much more prevalent in small towns. While growing up, I do remember an old lady refusing to eat anything that was not deep fried at a brahmin neighbor's house. As Anu pointed out, Kayastha's are considered a caste lower.

Coming to the show, The Vajpayees consider themselves of a higher caste orderand are quite conservative and staunch. On the other hand, the Mathurs are quite liberal. Add to that the feud regarding the common wall (Kul did not construct his side of the wall and neither pay for the existing one). No wonder they are daggers drawn.
