Are people sick of 'serious' movies

Almost all the recent movies that have done well at box office have had light hearted treatment, most of them have either been out and out comedies or they have had comedic undertones. There was a time when box office was ruled by dramtic tear jerkers with high emotional stuff, but that just doesnt seem the case now. Out and out emotional movies or movies with "serious" content, or dramas, thrillers and even movies heavy on social messages just end up doing average to below average business. What has happened? Have the audiences become less patient and more interested in few laughs for 3 hours without caring much about the long lasting effect or message behind the movie? Are movies not a platform anymore to convey imp messages.. without using tools like comedy?

If a movie is well made, it WILL do well. Perfect example that comes to mind is A Wednesday. Well made movie, on a serious subject, which did well, without resorting to comedy or any song and dance routines.
People want to watch GOOD movies. A subject that looks good on paper, does not necessarily translate into a good movie. Serious movie does not equate to a movie being good.

My thoughts: If I need to learn a message, I'll read a book. I watch movies for entertainment purposes. I shouldn't be talking because Comedy is my favourite genre. šŸ˜†šŸ˜† However, I have enjoyed serious movies, as well. Depends on my mood I guess.

Yes Aladin ji.. I love comedy too.. so I am one of those people who support comic flicks.. About A Wednesday.. yes it did well.. but still not earth shattering.. and it still didnt achieve a blockbuster status or even a very big super hit.. Serious stuff just doesnt work at bo any more.. the way it used to.. We all say that we should support mature cinema but the truth is very few of us end up watching serious cinema in theater.. and I dont blame people.. its their choice.. but just seeing a pattern in past few years..

i don't think so. I am sick of mindless comedies. Movies like A wednesday, Black Friday, Bombay were highly appreciated. I hope more good directors move away from there glamourous world and concentrate on the movie of reality.

You know, majority of people have enough tensions in their daily life. Comedies are such a huge stress busters.
LOL, funny you should say that. We should support mature cinema? Hmmm. I think it's not such a social cause that people feel that strongly about and they don't need to. Cinema is a luxury, not a necessity in life. People watch what they like. That's just how it is. People want entertainment. Lessons as I said, we can get from books, and they're usually well written. šŸ˜‰šŸ˜ƒ

šŸ˜†šŸ˜†šŸ˜† Reality movies are getting an audience now. However, I don't see comedies being out of fashion anytime soon. We all need stress busters in our life, and they're great for it. šŸ˜›šŸ˜‰

Average still means lots of people watched it as compared to a FLOP. šŸ˜› People who invested in it got their money back. They are happy. People who enjoyed the movie are also happy. Not everything can become BB or HIT. šŸ˜‰
The day all of them start to flop, you could say that NOBODY wants to watch them. At this point, obviously there is a market for it. DDD has it's shortcomings, otherwise, it could have done better than an average.
My point is, that people still go for such movies because they are great fun to watch after a hard day's work. You don't want to watch a serious movie that'll just depress you more. That's just what I feel.
