Aamir's 3 Idiots on course to be year's biggest hit
By ASHISH MITRA
Indiantelevision.com Team
(26 December 2009 1:38 pm)

MUMBAI: The last month of the year has had three good releases, one better than the other as far as box-office collections go.

First, it was AB Corp's Paa that brought to the fore the acting capabilities of the 65-plus Amitabh Bachchan when he played a 13-year-old child. Then we had James Cameron's Avatar that has supposedly broken box-office records of its Hollywood contemporaries 2012 and The Spiderman in India.

But the Christmas opening of 3 Idiots has brought in a big cheer in industry circles, mopping up over Rs 140 million at the box-office on its opening day of its theatrical release.

Says trade analyst Taran Adarsh, "3 Idiots has seen the biggest starts ever, collecting Rs. 25 milion in paid previews on Thursday. Comparatively, the paid preview collections of Ghajini were Rs 16 million net. And the film has had a solid first day opening, with estimates pegged at box-office collections of Rs 140 million."

Multiplex players, who have had a tough year with content, expect the movie to emerge as the biggest hit this fiscal. Says Cinemax vice president Devang Sampat, "The film is doing exceptional business. As per our properties, all I can say is that each one has broken its own previous records as far as the box-office returns of the opening day are concerned. To me, 3 Idiots will stand as the biggest hit of 2009."

Adds Delhi-based PVR Cinemas CEO Amitabh Vardhan, "This is one of the best openings this year in terms of theatrical revenues. Going by the advance booking numbers, we believe the film will continue with its success story in the days to come."

Made on a budget of Rs 350 million and distributed by Reliance Big Pictures, 3 Idiots has been released with 1894 prints, of which 1550 is for the Indian market.

Interestingly, Khan's superhit Ghajini was released during the same time of last year.

Says Reliance Big Pictures domestic distribution head Kamal Gianchandani, "The opening of the film is phenomenal and is currently on its way to become the highest-ever opening weekend grosser."

Three Idiots has hit the box office like a hurricane and has smashed many first day records at the box office. All records at multiplexes have been smashed as it records collections which are just unbelievable. Many multiplexes have recorded double the collections of Ghajini for the first Friday. The first day business was an unimaginable 12.75 crore nett.

The previous record was for first Friday was 9.25 crore nett recorded by Ghajini last December. It must be noted that the Three Idiots first day was a Christmas Day holiday while Ghajini first Friday was a normal day but even accounting for for that, it is still a phenomenal collection. This takes the Three Idiots total to 15.50 crore nett with paid previews (2.75 crore nett) and the weekend seems to be heading for 37-39 crore nett collections which is out of this world.

The all India territorial breakdown is as follows. Apart from Bihar, Assam and Orissa all circuits have recorded new records for first Friday.

Komal Nahta:3 idiots..Earth Shattering,mind blasting

Browse > Home / Reviews / Review of 3 Idiots Review of 3 Idiots
December 26, 2009 by TFSJ

Bollywood should be dancing, singing, rejoicing, shedding tears of joy…. For, Vinod Chopra Films' 3 Idiots (UA) has come like a tornado to smash box-office records and create new ones which may not be broken easily, at least in the immediate future.

Once in many years comes a blockbuster like 3 Idiots which has everything – comedy, hum- our, emotions, romance, drama, melodrama and, above all, fulfilling entertainment and mean- ingful social message. In short, 3 Idiots is cinema at its best, and its business will be one of the biggest in the history of Hindi cinema ever.

Based on Chetan Bhagat's novel, Five Point Someone, 3 Idiots is the story of three friends – Ranchhoddas Chanjad alias Rancho (Aamir Khan), Farhan Qureshi (R. Madhavan) and Raju Rastogi (Sharman Joshi). They study in the prestigious Imperial College of Engineering (ICE) and are somehow always in the bad books of its haughty principal, Viru Sahastrabuddhe alias Virus (Boman Irani) who thinks the three are nothing but idiots. Rancho, especially, is a non-conformist. He always strives to acquire knowledge rather than merely excelling academically.

The film, which goes into flashback after a few minutes of starting, reveals in the first half about how the three became close friends. Farhan hails from a middle-class family and although he is passionate about wildlife photography, his father wants him to become an engineer because of which he is in ICE. Rancho seriously believes in the philosophy that one should follow one's heart and over a period of time, he convinces Farhan to quit college and pursue his passion of wildlife photography. Raju comes from a very poor family which comprises an ailing father, an over-burdened and frustrated mother and a sister who can't be married off because he can't afford a Maruti car to give away in dowry.

Rancho not only saves Raju's father in an emergency by rushing him to hospital but also gives Raju a new perspective of life. He asks both, Farhan and Raju, to tide over difficult situations in life by convincing the mind with the words, 'Aal izz well'. And then, one day, Rancho disappears without informing his friends who are, therefore, clueless about his whereabouts.

Back to the present times. Ten years have elapsed. Chatur Ramalingam (Omi), a bookworm, who had studied with the trio, gets Farhan and Raju to the college campus once again, hoping that Rancho would come there in keeping with a bet Chatur had laid with him (Rancho). But when Rancho doesn't come there, Farhan, Raju and Chatur set out in search of him, taking alongwith them Rancho's girlfriend, Pia (Kareena Kapoor), who also yearns to be united with him.
The film, scripted by Abhijat Joshi, Rajkumar Hirani and Vidhu Vinod Chopra, is a flawless enterprise. Not a scene is out of place or lacking in any way, not a dialogue is irrelevant, not a performance is faulty or below the mark, not a nuance is wrong.

Rarely does one get to see such a wholesome entertainer that caters to age groups from three to 100, both the sexes, and all the classes and strata of society. If the first half makes the audience laugh uncontrollably in scene after scene after scene, the second half also has emotional moments that will make the public cry and the weak-hearted sob and weep! What is exhilarating for the viewer is that in the midst of all the supremely fresh humour and heart-rending sentiments comes the message that one mustn't bow down to societal or parental pressure in deciding on one's career.

Two points about the comedy here: the writers have penned scenes showing big college-going boys stripping down to their underwears so aesthetically that it doesn't look vulgar at all but rather evokes a lot of laughter among the audience.

Boys and men, especially, are going to go crazy about this comedy track. The second point is that the writers have poked fun at Raju Rastogi's poverty but not once does the fun leave a bad taste in the audience's mouth. The jokes about the poverty being the biggest curse of the Rastogi family are so fresh, so original and, most importantly, so non-demeaning that not a single person in the audience would feel offended. That's the genius of the writers, as also of the actors who could've spoilt the show if their acting weren't controlled and perfect.

In particular, the Chamatkar/ balaatkar scene in the pre-interval portion is a highlight and will bring the house down with laughter. It could easily feature in the Bollywood top 10 comedy scenes of all time. That scene alone has tremendous repeat value.

The other highlight is the presentation of Raju Rastogi's house in black & white to denote poverty akin to the financial condition of characters portrayed in films of the B & W era. The gatecrashing scene of the three friends in the wedding of Pia's sister, Mona (Mona Singh), the scene in which Rancho and Pia rush Raju's father to the hospital, the scene in which Rancho teaches his college-mate the lesson of his lifetime when he decides to urinate outside his hostel room, the scene in which Rancho defines 'machine' in the classroom, the scene in which Rancho and Farhan are eating food in Raju's house, the scene in which Pia describes Gujarati food, the scene in which Farhan and Raju threaten to flush down the mortal remains of Senior Ranchhoddas…. the list of hilarious scenes and sequences is long, very very long.

There are also some very good scenes on the emotional side. In this category, special mention must be made of the scene in which Raju apologises to Rancho in hospital, the scene in which Farhan pleads with his father to allow him to pursue wild- life photography as a career, and the scene in which Raju lands a job on the strength of his self-confidence. These are all scenes which will moisten the audience's eyes and even make the more emotional people cry bitterly.
There are also some scenes in which the audience would laugh while crying or cry while laughing. The prime example of such scenes is the one in which Rancho, Farhan and Raju's mother try to revive a semi-comatose Raju lying on the hospital bed. Another such scene which makes the audience cry and laugh together is when Farhan and Raju take off their pants in front of Rancho to express their gratitude to him.

The film also has a number of claptrap scenes. Actually, many of the comedy scenes are so ingenious that the audience would find itself clapping in appreciation while laughing and guffawing. Besides such comedy scenes, there are other scenes too, which would evoke claps. For instance, the scene in which Rancho ties Raju's father to himself as he rides him and Pia pillion to hospital, the scene in which Pia holds Raju's hand and runs away from her wedding mandap, the scene in which Rancho and his friends fight all odds to facilitate the birth of the child of Pia's sister, the scene in which the child lets out his first cry…. all these will be met with thunderous applause, claps and whistles.

If the climax is superb, the interval point is shocking, to say the least. It leaves the viewer speechless because one has least expected the twist that comes in the tale at that point. The film, it must be mentioned, has many layers and they are the multiple layers which make it a cinematic experience of a lifetime. Even the messages are aplenty. Besides asking people to follow their heart, the film also has a message for educational institutions – that rather than laying so much emphasis on success, they should encourage the students to become more capable because success will then automatically follow.

Dialogues, penned by Rajkumar Hirani and Abhijat Joshi, are gems. Every dialogue is so simple, yet so full of meaning that one can't help but admire the spoken words and applaud them after every few minutes.

Like the script, the performances by the actors are also great. Aamir Khan, a 40-plus actor, plays a 20-year-old college-going youngster to such perfection that no praise is too much for his talent. His appearance, his clothes, his gait, style of walking and talking, his mannerisms, his acting, all befit a 20-year-old and that's a major victory for Aamir. Easily a landmark performance by Aamir Khan, this film has the power to fetch awards for the reservoir of talent that he is. Kareena Kapoor looks superb and acts with such restraint that one can't help admiring her.

Undoubtedly, this is among her best performances. R. Madhavan does extremely well. He moves the audience to tears in the scene with his father in the second half. Sharman Joshi is fantastic. He seems to be a born actor, so smooth and unlaboured is his performance. He is exceptional in both, emotional and comic scenes. As Chatur, newfind Omi is mind-blowing and will become an overnight star, thanks to this film. Boman Irani deserves tons of praises for a job extraordinarily done. As the college principal and father of Pia, he is simply splendid and could easily walk away with awards for the best supporting actor. Parikshat Sahni leaves a strong impact. As his wife, Farida Dadi is nice. Amardeep Jha deserves kudos for her acting in the role of Raju Rastogi's mother. As his sister, Chaitali Bose is appropriate.

Mukund Bhatt, as Raju's father, lends able support. Akhil Mishra is efficient as the librarian. Achyut Potdar is excellent. Rahul Wagh (as the young Millimetre) and Dushyant Wagh (as the grown-up Millimetre) are superb. Atul Tiwari, as education minister, acts very naturally. Jaaved Jaaferi stands out in a brief role. Mona Singh is cute. Sanjay Lafont (as Suhas) is very effective and leaves a mark in a brief role. Ali Fazal (Joy), Madhav Vaze (Joy's old father), Arun Bali (Jaaved Jaaferi's father), Rajendra Patwardhan (old peon), Supriya Shukla (matron who assists Kareena Kapoor in the child delivery scene) and Michael Joseph (exam invigilator) lend superb support.

Rajkumar Hirani's direction is fantastic. Unquestionably, the best directorial work of not just 2009 but in a long, long time. Hirani's biggest plus point is that his narrative style in the film never gets preachy even though there are so many messages conveyed. Another major victory for the director comes because his easy narrative style appeals to all age groups and all strata of society. He seems to know the pulse of the public just too beautifully. Music (Shantanu Moitra) is superb. The 'Aal izz well' song is wonderful but even more wonderful is its picturisation (Avit Dias) and the relevance of the mukhda of the song in the context of the film's story.

It should not be a wonder if because of the aforementioned reasons, the song goes on to become the new national anthem for some months! 'Behti hawa sa tha woh', 'Give me some sunshine' and 'Jaane nahin denge' (the last-named song is excellently rendered by Sonu Nigam) have extraordinary melody and great lyrical value (Swanand Kirkire). 'Zoobi doobi' is yet another excellent song and its picturisation (Bosco-Caesar) is refreshingly different. Background music is excellent. C.K. Muraleedharan's cinematography is superb and just too eye-filling. Production and technical values are of a high standard.

On the whole, 3 Idiots will prove to be one of Hindi film industry's biggest hits ever. It will smash box-office records from North to South and East to West and write new box-office history. The tremendous entertainment value in the film will prompt people to repeat the film not just once but even twice, thrice and four times (yes, this is not an exaggeration!). For the messages it gives, the film deserves governmental support in the form of tax exemption.

Frankly, so remarkable is the film that one would need to coin a new word to describe its worth, just like Aamir Khan coins two words – 'Farhanitrate' and 'Prerajulisation' – in the film, deriving them from the names of his two best friends. Let's just say, this one is a Hiranistic Blockhanbuster i.e. a fantastic blockbuster by Hirani and (Aamir) Khan!
Released on 24-12-'09 at Regal (daily 3 shows) and 74 more cinemas and on 25-12-'09 at Eros (matinee), New Empire (daily 4 shows), Maratha Mandir and 40 other cinemas of Bombay thru Reliance Big Pictures. Publicity: outstanding. Opening: earth-shattering. …….Also released all over. Opening was historic everywhere, surpassing all expectations!!

Starring: Aamir Khan, Sharman Joshi, R Madhavan, Kareena Kapoor, Boman Irani and others

Director: Raj Kumar Hirani

When the industry's best talents - Aamir Khan and Raj Kumar Hirani get together, obviously one expects a film of very high quality. And the good news is that their latest 3 Idiots lives up to most of those expectations. Knowing their repertoire - Aamir with films like Taare Zameen Par, Lagaan and Hirani with the two superlative Munnabhai fims - they've come up with the sort of engaging, inspiring and entertaining film only they could have made. Both like to add pop pholosophy to the mix, and Hirani in his own inimitable style tells you what all is wrong with our education system. Yes, the point gets overstated at times, but thankflly, the film gets constantly redeemed by the delighful vein of ironic humour that runs throughout the film and the warmth that pervades it.

The film owes its basic premise to Chetan Bhagat's 5 Point Someone. And even though there's much in the film that is not there in the book and vice versa, 3 Idiots still manages to capture the essence of Bhagat's bestseller. The film is about three friends - Rancho (Aamir Khan), Farhan Qureshi (Madhavan) and Raju Rastogi (Sharman), studying together at a prestigious Engineering college. While Rancho is the out-of-the-box free-thinking student, the other two find themselves constantly crushed by an education system that rewards marks over merit. Then there's parental pressures to be dealt with. Slowly but surely Rancho's own atittitude to life brings about a positive change in both Farhan and Raju. So when Rancho disappears from the scene one day and remains untraceable for a few years, both friends undertake a journey to find him.

The story in the first half primarily revolves around campus life and operates on a rather broad comic level. There is not much depth here and it's essentially the wry humour and funny situations that keep it going. (Yes, there is a lot of scatalogical humour, but that seems part and parcel of Boys hostel life. Quite harmless and nothing to be outraged really, especially since there is so much else working for the film anyway.) The first half is fairly good, but by no means superlative. There's too much lecture baazi from Rancho, so much so that his friends jokingly refer to him as "Baba"

3 Idiots, with all the fun and games, and some truly witty dialogues and situations, would have remained just another frothy flick, if it were not for the literal and metaphorical journey that Farhan and Raju undertake to find Rancho.
This is really the core of the film, and a very clever narrative choice from the story-telling point of view. This journey of contemplation brings depth to the film and lends it an emotional sweep that takes your breath away. The second half is tremendously entertaining and remains pacy and engaging right till the end. The background score is pitch perfect and often enhances the scenes.

The film's mainstay are its superb performances. Quite incredibly, the 44 year old Aamir Khan makes the 22 year old Rancho a real flesh and blood character, never once drawing attention to himself as a star. Kareena Kapoor brings in a lot of freshness, though one can't say she's a natural fit in Hirani world. The makers have obviously tried to bring down her oomph levels, but her presence still remains overwhelming before her simply dressed, shorter co-star.
ROTFLMAO ROTFLMAO

Madhavan, much like suga to tea, is not an overt presence in the film, but he's enormously vital to the mix. Sharman Joshi is simply brilliant and it is his chracter and performance that makes the lasting impact long after you've seen the movie.
Boman Irani's role (as the principal) doesn't work as well as it did in the other two Munnabhais, but the film doesn't miss it, thanks to the inclusion of another superbly sketched character, Chatur Ramalingam (Omi - a fabulous find). Mona Singh as Kareena's sister, has a very brief role, but she does well.

Shantanu Moitra's music is situational. Aal Izz Well has already scaled the heights of popularity and it serves the film very well.

Finally, Raj Kumar Hirani delivers once again a film that is hugely entertaining. His last film Lage Raho Munnabhai was a gentler, sweeter film. 3 Idiots, more like Munnabhai MBBS is sharper and wicked. It is also grander and fulfilling.

3 Idiots is then a power-packed, high-quality, big scale Bollywood entertainer, certainly the best of the year. And yes, the film should be very high on repeat value.

Stars: ****

Movie Review: 3 Idiots (2009) starring Aamir Khan, Kareena Kapoor, R Madhavan, Sharman Joshi
Published by Webmaster at 12:28:51 am on December 26, 2009

MOVIE REVIEW: 3 IDIOTS (2009)

Cast: Aamir Khan, Kareena Kapoor, R Madhavan, Sharman Joshi, Boman Irani, Mona Singh, Parikshat Sahni, Javed Jaffrey, Akhil Mishra, Rahul Kumar
Director: Rajkumar Hirani
Producer: Vidhu Vinod Chopra
Music Director: Shantanu Moitra
Lyrics: Swanand Kirkire
Cinematography: C.K. Muraleedharan
Screenplay: Vidhu Vinod Chopra, Rajkumar Hirani, Abhijit Joshi

Rajkumar Hirani's 3 Idiots are really sensible. Like his previous Munnabhai series, his latest release 3Idiots starring Aamir Khan, Sharman Joshi, R. Madhvan, Kareena Kapoor, Boman Irani and Mona Singh too strikes the chord with the word Go. After watching the movie everyone will have a new theory in their lives of Aal Izz Well.

The story begins with Farhan and Raju on a journey in the search of their friend Rancho (Aamir Khan) in the exclusive locales of Simla and Ladak. While their journey continues, the movie takes a flashback and unwinds the story of the three idiots of their college days- Ranchodas Shyamaldas Chanchad (Aamir Khan), Farhan Qureshi (R. Madhvan) and Raju Rastogi (Sharman Joshi).

Rancho, Raju and Farhan are the students of the premier IIT College. Rancho is a different than rest of the students; he can't live the way others live. He is an overpowering thinker and also has the capability to change the people views. He leads his mates all the way through this irrational, high-pressure, rote-heavy and malicious education system and teaches them the way to overcome the stupid ideologies. And above all he tutors and guides them as to how to deal with the baddie of the college- the Dean himself, Viru Sahastrabuddhe (Boman Irani).

On one hand, Rancho is a sensible thinker and on the other he is a true lover of the sweet girl Pia (Kareena Kapoor). But to make his life difficult and more complicated Pia is the daughter of Rancho's arch adversary Mr. Viru Sahastrabuddhe.

Above all the trio manages to handle their each problem and lead their lives happily as well as have fun to the core. The movie takes the viewer through a roller-coaster ride fill with loads of witty one liner and keeps tickling the bone as the film proceeds. The movie's classic humour gives no time to rest and one dies laughing; until one fine day when Rancho suddenly disappears from everyone's life.
Post interval the movie exposes the emotional side of the story. The disappearing act of Rancho leaves people flabbergasted as the person who changed the people's ideology for life and thought them reasoning was lost.

Rajkumar Hirani really deserves a standing ovation for the film. Like his previous films this movie to carries the message- A message as to how a student is pressurised and burdened under the parent's expectations to make it big in this world; and one who fails as well as is unable to bear this laden commits suicide. The movie is for all ages and makes everyone think.

The script by Hirani and Joshi is perfect. Muraleedharan C.K's cinematography is excellent. The dialogues are humours and hard-hitting. Shantanu Moitra's music is average. The lyrics are catchy yet sensible.

The actors are just impeccable and everyone delivers their best. Aamir Khan is rocking and this is his one of the finest work till date. Sharman Joshi and R. Madhvan are immaculate and unstoppable. Boman Irani is like other films totally flawless and Kareena Kapoor is superb. Dance

All in all, a must watch flick and one of the finest movies of the year. Go grab it!!!

RS RATING: 8/10

My Review
Oh Bhayia. ALL IZ WELL!!... OH chachu all izzz well!!! Goshhhhhhhhhhhhhhh What a feel good movie.. what a refreshing experience.... what a breath of fresh air... And no I wouldn't call it the best movie of the year.. or say OH it deserves all the awards... you know why??? Because Ranncchoddas Shamalaldas Chanchad woudn't approve of that! 😆 He wouldn't want me to put his movie through the stupid rat race... cauz as he sayz... life is NOT a race...life is about loving what you do.. its about striving for excellence and not success! its about doing what you love.. being passionate about your passions and living your life to the fullest in the most carefree way......Yeeehhaaa.. Toh bolo All izz well.. because apparently this matra makes new born babies to kick like beckham.. 😆
About the plot.. Yaar don't even lemme get into it.. I don't think that I am capable enough to even talk about it.. Its is soooooo simplistic from the outer core.. but from a writer's point of view it is so complex, detailed.. and entangled.. and the end result is a VERY simple story.. told in the most refreshing, uplifting and all izz well way. 😆 😉 Gosh.. and its hillarious!! The bebo's sis Shaadi scene.. had me laughing like a crazy person.. and it wasn't only me.. but the whole theater went NUTS.. the delivery scene, all the college scenes.. I say that each and every scene of the movie was special in a way.. gosh when racho goes to his friends houses.. that is just hillarious..And that balatkar/chamatkar speech!!! Gosh I havent laughed that hard since ages.. and not even in out and out comedies.. just beyond good! Seriously my keyboard keys would go numb.. if I start talking about each and every good scene.. cauz the whole movie is a piece of art.. The dynamic rancho shares with his friends.. pia/kareena..is just awesome! Booman Irani is back with his Dean's act.. and is awesome.. yet again.. Honestly man!! This movie just works from the word go.. each and every character is believable.. because it is taken from real life.. each and every incident is relatable.. cauz it should have happened to me or you.. at some point in life or another! This movie was successful in hitting all the emotions in me.. I laughed, I cried.. I was awwed.. I gushed.. I did everything in the span of those hours.. and this movie has seriously won my heart...
About performances.. Aamir khan is a genius!!! He yet again manages to get into the skin of the character and looks 20/22.. His hairstyle excentuates his expressive eyes.. and his body language, demeanor, everything.. is PERFECT! Just like him.. 😳 Madhavan and Sharman compliment Aamir is great way.. and these three seriously seem like real friends.. Bebo is awesome as Pia.. her dhokla and phaphada.. dialoge had everyone in splits.. 😆 She is just adorable.. I wanna see her in many many good movies.. just like this.. She has a smile that can light up a room.. she seriously should do more movies like this...
Overall All izz well hai bhiya.. Certainly how a bolly movie should be like! Really man..it brought a beautiful smile on my face!
Everyone just go and watch it!! And guyz.. anyone here has 3 idiot sigs.. of Aamir.. I really want one.. I have fallen in love with Aamir khan all over again.. His character Rancho is truely about spirit of Aamir khan.. always daring to be different and loving his causes.. with passion..
My parting words.. Baba Randchoddas ki jai ho.. 😆

Masand's Movie Review: 3 Idiots, satisfying but not the best

Director: Rajkumar Hirani.

Going home after watching 3 Idiots I felt like I'd just been to my favorite restaurant only to be a tad under-whelmed by their signature dish. It was a satisfying meal, don't get me wrong, but not the best meal I'd been expecting.

3 Idiots, starring Aamir Khan, produced by Vidhu Vinod Chopra, and written and directed by Rajkumar Hirani, is a film of impeccable pedigree. It's a breezy entertainer and it's got its heart in the right place, but it appears to be lacking in the naiive idealism and old-fashioned sincerity that propelled Hirani's two Munnabhai films to cult status.

Loosely based on Chetan Bhagat's pulpy bestseller Five Point Someone, 3 Idiots takes light-hearted but pointed jabs at the Indian education system, raising pertinent questions about the relevance of learning by rote, the obsession with high grades, and the dangerous repercussions of parental pressure to pursue traditional streams.

Set on an engineering campus in Delhi modeled after the IIT, the film features Aamir Khan as free-spirited student Rancho who dishes out important life lessons to his roommates Farhan and Raju (played by R Madhavan and Sharman Joshi), even as Naziesque campus director Viru Sahastrabuddhe (played by Boman Irani) clashes with him for brazenly rejecting conventional wisdom.

Rancho, as it turns out, can do just about anything. From empowering Farhan to convince his family he wants to be a photographer not an engineer, to nursing another friend back to health after a failed suicide attempt, Rancho even helps an unsuspecting girl open her eyes to the superficial jerk she's about to marry, and believe it or not, at one point he even delivers a baby on the college ping-pong table following instructions from a doctor on webcam.

But soon after teaching them these valuable lessons and touching their lives in some way or the other, Rancho vanishes. The film is told mostly in flashback, with Farhan and Raju setting off to find their buddy a few years later.

And because no Hindi film can be complete without a romance, Hirani and his co-writer Abhijat Joshi also manage to squeeze in a love track between Rancho and the college director's daughter Pia (played by Kareena Kapoor).

The film's first half breezes by effortlessly between Hirani's trademark comic flourishes including a hilarious ragging scene, two witty confrontations with teachers, and even an uproarious Farrelly Brothers-style gag involving a rolling pin and a paralysed man. Expectedly, the humor is alternated with moments of poignancy like that delicate scene in which the group first discovers a fellow student's suicide.

Problem is, the genuine lump-in-your-throat moments are few and far between, the screenplay populated instead by a batch of scenes calling for push-button emotions. Where the Munnabhai films cunningly tricked you into shedding an unexpected tear, 3 Idiots goes for full-throttle melodrama.

The film's second half in particular, is a tiring mess of ridiculous back-stories, convenient coincidences and sappy sentimentality.

Despite these hiccups, the film still works to a fair extent because of the inherent optimism in the plot and the sheer good-naturedness of its characters. It's hard to resist Rancho's cheery "All izz well" chant even if Hirani does push it a little too far when he ties it to a baby's first in-womb kick, and the scene I mentioned earlier involving a delivery on a ping-pong table.

Of the cast, Sharman Joshi has a meatier role than R Madhavan, hence succeeds in fleshing him out more competently. Kareena Kapoor makes her presence felt despite the small role, and Boman Irani - although he's trapped in a caricature - inspires hearty laughs.

But for me, the performance that stood out in this film belongs to lesser-known LA-based actor Omi Vaidya who stars as the Hindi-challenged Chatur Ramalingam, who deserves credit for turning an old childish gag into what is one of the film's funniest scenes on the strength of his pitch-perfect expressions and delivery.

And then of course, there's Aamir Khan as Rancho. Who never quite passes off as a 20-something-year-old, but remains the heart and soul of 3 Idiots with his spot-on comedy, his measured histrionics, and his immense likeability.

The film, in the end, is a broad entertainer that plays to the gallery, well-intentioned but sadly muddled. However it's warmer than any other comedy this year - think Ajab Prem Ki Ghazab Kahani, All The Best or De Dana Dan - and hence it's unquestionably an enjoyable watch.

From the man behind those decade-defining Munnabhai films, however, it is far from his best work. I'm going with three out of five for director Rajkumar Hirani's 3 Idiots, an earnest but calculated effort that runs, but never flies. Watch it anyway, because it's the season to be jolly, and good laughs are guaranteed.
