Reality show star Ishmeet Singh drowns in Maldives

LUDHIANA: Very few can forget his innocent smile and soft, tempered voice. Today, though, Ishmeet Singh, the popular winner of a reality singing competition is no more.

In shocking news that engulfed Ludhiana in a pall of gloom and collective mourning, the budding singer died on Tuesday apparently by drowning in Maldives.

A blooming career cut short, the rattled city reacted with disbelief as the news spread like wildfire. People from all walks of life -- friends, relatives and fans of the Sardar who had captured the imagination of the nation with his melodious voice - started streaming into in to his home at Shastri Nagar, many of them weeping loudly.

Only last year the city had run a campaign lobbying for the singing sensation. The Sikh community and Punjabis across India and the world voted proudly and unabashedly for him, making him the eventual winner.

Crying profusely, Charankamal Singh, his uncle and the chief strategist of the lobby group then, confirmed his death on phone before snapping the connection off.

Too shocked to react Gurpinder Singh, father of Ishmeet, said he doesn't know anything about what happened. Ishmeet's mother, too shaken to shed a tear, sat quietly before a TV set relaying news that shattered her.

Atamjit Singh, one of the relatives told TOI that they got a call from the CEO of Big Events, hosting a programme with Ishmeet in Maldives, that he drowned at the beach.

"Ishmeet had gone just this morning to Maldives," he said.

Reports from Colombo said that Singh, 20, had been frolicking in a shallow pool meant for children on Tuesday and later jumped into the deep-end of the main swimming pool and had immediately run into difficulty, an official of the Dhonveli resort in Maldives said.

"We understand that he did not know how to swim and had been advised by his friends not to get to the deep end," a hotel official said when contacted from Colombo. His body was taken to the capital island Male, about half-an-hour by speed boat.

He had arrived in the Indian Ocean atoll nation early on Tuesday to sing at a musical concert on Friday. He had won the Voice of India singing competition organised by the Star television network and shot to stardom in November last year.

Swimming accidents are rare in the Maldivian archipelago which is known for snorkelling and diving and exotic reef fish. Maldives is reportedly the most expensive tourist destination in South Asia.

Celebrity singer Ishmeet Singh from Punjab, who shot to fame by winning the Voice of India [Images] (on Star TV) contest in November last year, drowned in a swimming pool on Tuesday at a resort in the Maldives [Images] where he had gone to take part in a concert.

Gurprinder Singh Sodhi, father of 20-year-old Ishmeet [Images], said at their home in Ludhiana that the event management company, which took his son to the Maldives, informed him at around 2000 hours that the singer had died due to drowning in the swimming pool of the hotel where he was staying.

The second year Bachelor of Commerce student of MNC College, Mumbai, had gone to the pool for frolicking, but fell into its deep end leading to his drowning, agencies reported, quoting a hotel official.

Sodhi told media persons that they were surprised that their son had died due to drowning in the swimming pool.

"He had never swam before us and we are not aware whether he could swim or not," an inconsolable father said.

"Television channels announced his death at around 2100 hours, the time when were expecting to see Ishmeet perform for the first time in the Maldives," Sodhi said.

He said Ishmeet had left Ludhiana on Monday for Chandigarh from where he went to Mumbai on way to the Maldives.

A pall of gloom descended on the house of the singer in Ludhiana immediately after the news of his death reached.

Ishmeet's mother Amritpal Kaur was in a state of shock and so was his sister.

A large number of people gathered at the small house of Ishmeet in Shastri Nagar locality of the industrial town. All roads leading to his house from various adjoining localities, including Model Town and Pakhowal Road were choked with vehicles and people trying to reach the singer's house.

Ishmeet was doing a course in Architecture in Amritsar [Images] before he shifted to Mumbai last year after he won the Voice of India singing contest.

Sodhi said the event management company had informed the family that the body was expected to be brought to India on Wednesday. The cremation would be performed in Ludhiana.

Ishmeet's death plunged the music world into mourning and leading playback singers Lata Mangeshkar [Images] and Abhijeet and Shaan [Images] expressed shock at the incident.

"I was very happy when he won the Voice of India contest. Such a fate to befall one at such a young age -- I have no words to express my feelings," said Lata.

She said Ishmeet had an original voice and did not imitate anyone.

Abhijeet, who was one of the jury members for Voice of India contest, said he was like a mentor for Ishmeet. Abhijeet said he recognised the talent in Ishmeet and other jury members used to accuse him of favouring him.

Shaan said he was shocked at learning the news of Ishmeet's death.

Voice Of India Star Drowns In Maldives Swimming Pool
By Minivan News
July 29, 2008

Voice of India TV star Ishmeet Singh drowned on Tuesday in a swimming pool at Dhonveli Beach and Spa Resort in the Maldives.

The 19-year old pop singer was with friends when he entered the swimming pool despite being unable to swim, according to assistant manager Marlon Robert. The lifeguard was off duty at the time.

He was taken by a resort launch to ADK hospital in Male' following an unsuccessful attempt by the resident doctor to resuscitate him, Robert said.

Singh arrived in Maldives on Tuesday to appear in the Star Voice of Maldives on August 1.

He won Voice of India title in November 2007 and has since become a national celebrity there.

The incident happened on Tuesday around 5.15pm, when Singh and around six friends had been at the poolside. None of the boys could swim, Robert said, and they had remained in the children's pool.

Singh then told his friends he would go into the deeper pool, according to Robert.

"The fact is, this gentleman – without realising the gravity of it – went into the deep end [of the pool]," Robert told Minivan News.

ADK hospital Managing director Mohamed Affal said he had been dead on arrival at the hospital, but said he did not know the cause of death.

The police have confirmed the case had been reported and was under investigation.

Ishmeet Singh Sodhi, from Ludhiyana in Punjab, was the first winner of Voice of India last year. He had also participated in the Jo Jeeta Wohi Superstar Show on Star Channel.

On winning the voice of India, Singh reportedly said: "I am not a trained singer, yet I managed to reach this far. It makes me very happy. However, I never expected to win this show."

According to Indian media, his family have been informed by phone. "We are too shocked to react. We have no other information so far," a relative told India's Economic Times.

And fellow Voice of India contestant Harshit told a TV channel: "He was like a brother to me. I cannot even comment on what has happened. I cannot believe that he is no longer with us."
