Music industry mourns Ishmeet's death

By Radioandmusic.com
(30 July 2008 2:00 pm)

MUMBAI: As news of his death reached the music industry late last night, many could not believe that the Voice of India 2007 winner Ishmeet Singh had met with a fatal accident. The 19 year old Ludhiana based singer died of drowning in a swimming pool in the Maldives while on his promotional tour to promote a music label with which he had signed a contract. Ishmeet was accompanied with another VoI and Jo jeeta wohi superstar contestant Sumitra Iyer for the Maldives event, that was to be held from 1 to 6 August.

The producer of Voice of India, Gajendra Singh, who knew Ishmeet well, said he was too stunned to react. "Ishmeet was like a child to me and I can't still believe that he is no longer with us. I feel choked thinking about it and am trying hard to overcome my grief," he said.

Ishmeet had already finished recording a romantic album with music director Lalit Sen and was about to lend his voice for the music director's forthcoming project. The music director has finished recording for the album whose title track is named as 'Dhol Wajda', a bhangra pop number.

Harshit Saxena, who lost to Ishmeet in the VoI finals, and a fellow contestant in Jo jeeta wohi superstar, said, "We have been together for almost two years now and have shared the same room as a part of the show. Although we were the final contenders in VoI, there was no sense of competition and we were like brothers. I remember him as a guy who used to love net surfing and ate a lot of pizzas!" Harshit, in fact, was to have accompanied Ishmeet to the Maldives for the same day, but could not due to prior commitments.

Harshit points out that having sung in a Punjabi movie recently, Ishmeet was looking forward to step in the playback singing scene in a big way.

Himani Kapoor who had been with Ishmeet in VoI and Jo jeeta wohi superstar, remembers him as a reserved and humble guy who had a smile on his face, come what may. She recalls, "We had this Punjabi connection and we used to chat sometimes in Punjabi. I still can't get over the fact that something so terrible happened with him. During the shoots, we all used to bully him and play pranks on him."

Reminiscing the Jo Jeeta wohi superstar days, Kapoor adds, "I remember the Mother's Special episode where Ishmeet's mom gave him a surprise by coming to the sets and she recollected his childhood, saying he used to shun water, and threw tantrums when he had to have a bath."

Ishmeet's mom was not very keen with him taking up music as a career and, on the sets of Jo jeeta wohi superstar, he promised to qualify as a Chartered Accountant. Kapoor points out, "He had even looked for some CA courses in Mumbai and was going to take up studies to make his mother happy."

Ishmeet had signed a three year contract with Big Music and had also finalised his world music tour. Insiders say Ishmeet was also reading some Punjabi scripts that had come his way. With the victory in Voice of India, he had become a known face in Punjab and his picture was also used on lottery tickets in the state.

Singer Shaan, who hosted the VoI series on Star Plus, remembers Ishmeet as a unique and wonderful youngster. "He was a perfect role model and example of how one should be. Someone, who never had any issues with anybody, and though on many occasions he was in a tough position, he took everything in his stride."

Referring to his passion for music, Shaan recalls, "Ishmeet was very ambitious and had made plans for his playback singing career. He had set a deadline for himself and he wanted to cut an album. I remember him saying 'If nothing, I'll go ahead with something which is classical."

Talking about the album, Pandit said, "Ishmeet was a very talented singer who took all our feedback very seriously. He had a North flavor in his voice which stood out and made him so popular. I will release his album soon as he has worked extremely hard for the album. I shared a very good bond with him; he was very fond of me. I will always cherish him in memory."

"I still can't forget our visit to his home town. The whole unit of Voice of India had been at his home for a visit and I had chatted with Ishmeet in his room. He was very modest. We always urged him to act like a sardar and be fearless about everything. The last I had met him was when we were shooting for his album, in which I made a special appearance. He was just like a younger brother to me."

I've had very little sleep since I heard the news. I've only watched him on TV, but now it's like.... I cannot get his image out of my head at all. A down to earth person through and through, with that innocent smile .... An immensely talented singer and a great human being.... no matter what we do, we cannot bring him back. and that's just unbearable.

Courting danger

Ishmeet Singh who breathed his last on Tuesday evening will be cremated today at his hometown Ludhiana. The 19-year-old drowned in a swimming pool at a hotel in Male. But what most don't know is that this was not Ishmeet's first brush with death.

Gajendra Singh, the producer and director of Voice of India says, "I just met him a day before his trip to the Maldives as we were working on a show together.

Incidentally, just about eight days ago, Ishmeet had met with a near-fatal accident on the Mumbai-Pune highway. I had seen the pictures of the car in which he was travelling and no one could believe that he had survived that accident.

I have spoken to his father after his death and what happened is extremely sad."

Toshi

Meanwhile, Ishmeet's close friend Himani Kapoor says, "It seems like Ishmeet was living life on the edge and death was following him.

I remember just a week ago he had an accident on the Mumbai-Pune highway but was saved somehow.

Earlier, he also had met with an accident where he broke his leg in Malaysia during one of our shows. It is very sad and unfortunate. It looks like God was giving him a warning."

Goodbye Ishmeet

Ishmeet was extremely popular among his fellow contestants. Most of his friends will be attending his funeral in Ludhiana this afternoon. In fact, some of the contestants also got together on Wednesday morning at the Andheri gurudwara to pray for him.

Toshi, who is one of his closest friends from the Voice of India show, says, "Yes we all met at the gurudwara this morning and prayed for Ishmeet. We are all going to the funeral as we want to be with his parents in their moment of grief."

Himani says, "I still can't believe that Ishmeet is no more. I still feel that someone will call me and say that Ishmeet's death was a joke. He was my closest friend and since he was also a Punjabi, we got along very well. I will be attending the funeral with some of the other contestants and a couple of people from the production house Endemol."

Gajendra Singh says, "Quite a few people from the Endemol are going to Ishmeet's funeral and Abhijeet, Prita and Bani from the Star team will be there too. I believe Himani and Harshit Saxena are will also be there at the funeral."

What exactly happened?

Although it is known that Ishmeet drowned, everyone is still clueless about what exactly happened. There are reports that everyone there had warned him of not entering the pool as he didn't know how to swim.

Our source says, "Although Ishmeet was earlier swimming in the children's pool, he suddenly jumped into the deeper end. He didn't know swimming and he died instantly.

His fellow contestant Arunima had also warned him and even Vyom kept telling him to stay away from the deep end but Ishmeet just jumped into the pool and drowned.

He was already dead by the time he was pulled out of the pool. In fact, Arunima Bhatacharya and Sumitra Iyer were also there when the incident happened."

Himani says, "It is so unfortunate and I really feel bad for his parents. It was such an unnatural death. There are so many questions that come to my mind. Were there no lifeguards when this happened?

How can someone die in a swimming pool? I just wish someone had saved him."

When we contacted the Male resort where Ishmeet was staying, a spokesperson said, " Ishmeet hit his head when he jumped into the pool."

Dreams left unfulfilled

Ishmeet had a bright future and everybody loved his voice. He was in the process of coming up with his own album and was also very keen to fulfill his mother's dream.

Gajendra Singh

His mother also wanted him to complete his studies, which he had left to participate in the Voice of India, which shot him to fame. In fact, he was also looking forward to joining a college to complete his studies.

He had confided to his close friend Himani that he also wanted to be a Chartered Accountant according to his mother's wishes.

Himani says, "I think Ishmeet had even enquired about the admission process at NM College in Mumbai.

He had told me that he wanted to do fulfill his mother's dream of him becoming a CA."

India Ludhiana mourns Ishmeet's sudden demise
Ludhiana | Wednesday, Jul 30 2008 IST

< ="http://pagead2.googlesyndication.com/pagead/show_ads.js" =text/>
Grief-struck people continued to pour in at the Shashtri Nagar residence of Ishmeet Singh to convey condolences on the sudden demise of the promising teenage singer even as his parents and elder sister were trying to come to terms with their great loss. Ishmeet, who would have turned 20 on August 3 this year, drowned in a swimming pool at a Male resort last night where he had gone on a promotional event of a musical company. While his mother Amrit Kaur was in a state of shock since the family received the news telephonically, his elder sister Sukhmeet Kaur was besides herself with grief. Ishmeet's father Gurpinder Pal Singh, had a dazed look as he went about stoically answering numerous telephone calls and received VIPs who steadily trooped in to pay tributes to his popular son. While neighbours, relatives, fans and friends thronged around the house, many prominent leaders including Deputy Speaker Lok Sabha Charanjit Singh Atwal, SAD chief Sukhbir Badal, Luhiana MP Sharanjit Singh Dhillon, SGPC chief Avtar Singh Makkar, Ludhiana Mayor Hakim Singh Giaspura, DC Sumer Singh Gurjar and SSP R K Jaiswal visited the family to share their sorrow. Meanwhile, Guru Nanak Public school where Ishmeet had studied, remained closed today as a mark of respect to its favourite student. Its principal, R S Gill said he was shocked by the news of sudden demise of the young singing star who had been the life of school functions for years. Govenment College for Boys, from where Ishmeet did his B Com first year before joining a Mumbai college, also held a condolence meeting. Ishmeet, though a former student, was actively involved with the preparations of the Youth festival of the college to be held soon. His fellow students recalled with moist eyes that even after acquiring fame, Ismeet remained untouched by the glamour and was as friendly and accesible as ever. The ''spirit of the fest is now gone with his sudden demise, '' they felt. Mr S chawala and Ms Radhika Jetwani, who had accompanied him to Mumbai during the Star Voice of India contest, said Ismeet was like a son to them and his death had left a great vacuum in their lives. The head jathhedar of the famous Dukhnivaran Sahib Gurdwara Prithpal Singh was in tears as he reminisced that he had held special 'ardaas' for Ishmeet's victory for the contest and as soon as he came back with the title, Ismeet paid his obeisance and sang hymns in the shrine. ''I could never imagine that an unfortunate day would come when I would have say a prayer for the peace of the soul of the young boy who sang so soulfully in the same shrine on many a occasion,'' the Jathhedar said. A senior doctor of the prominent Dayanand Medical College, Dr R S Chheena, who conveyed the condolences on behalf of the institute, said Ishmeet used to give scintillating performancs at the functions and the hospital staff had plunged in grief on hearing the news of his sudden demise. Ishmeet's body is expected here late tonight or early tomorrow morning, depending upon the weather condition, and cremation was scheduled for 1600 hrs at Model Town Extension cremation ground tomorrow.

Punjab Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal, who expressed profound grief and sorrow over Ishmeet's tragic demise, had made special arrangements for the body to be flown here from Delhi. He will be given a state funeral tomorrow, press advisor to the CM, Harcharan Bains told UNI.

'I can still hear Ishmeet calling me'

MUMBAI: "I can still hear him call out 'Oy Himaneeee' from across the room," says reality show contestant Himani Kapoor who is still in a state of shock on learning about "Voice Of India" winner Ishmeet Singh's death in the Maldives.

"I can still hear him call out 'Oy Himaneeee' from across the room. He was such a gem of a person. Why should he be taken away so rudely? I'm leaving for Ishmeet's hometown Ludhiana. I want to see him for the last time. I still can't believe he's gone," Himani said.

Ishmeet, 19, had gone to the Maldives for a promotional event with the music company with which he had a contract. Ishmeet left Mumbai on Tuesday morning for the Maldives, where he was to perform Aug 1. However, he drowned Tuesday in a swimming pool at a beach resort.

Himani accompanies the whole 'Voice Of India' team to Ludhiana for the funeral Thursday at 4 p.m. Ishmeet's body was flown to Ludhiana from the Maldives on Wednesday evening.

"All of us from 'Voice of India', Toshi Sabri, Irfan Ali, Aishwarya plus two members of Endemol, the company that produces the show, will be going to Ludhiana. And of course, Gajendra Singhji (the programme's producer and director)."

Till late on Wednesday evening Gajendra Singh was unable to take in the bad news.

"How could this happen?" he kept repeating.
