The story is set in a middle class basti in Mumbai, occupied by the mill workers who have lost their job as the mill has shut. The main protagonist Uma is a 27-year old dutiful daughter. She works hard to run the family ever since her father and brother lost their jobs after the mill shut.

Uma constantly tries to motivate the people in her basti to train themselves to conform to the various roles in the running of a mall which replaces the mill...

Uma's mother hopes to see her two daughters, Uma and her younger sister married and settled in life. Their education is not her priority to her but Uma aspires to fulfil her dreams.

Sambhav and Dushyant Jajodia are the mill owners who intend to conquer the basti property too. Uma gets married into their family that was also responsible for her younger brother's death.

To add yet another twist to her life, she discovers that her husband suffers from schizophrenia...

My mom used to watch that show. Yeah you are right in that show the father married another woman after the death of his first wife. The step mother is really evil, no one knows that everyone loves her, she has three children of her own, but her goal is to kill the first born son from her husband's first marraige because she wants all the property to go to her own children. She does something to him when he was young, he becomes sort of mental, then he gets married to this middle class girl, the lead protagonist. She cures him and finds out the secret in the family about how her step mother in law is trying to kill her husband.
