Harsh reality

Harsh Chhaya aka Dushyant of Thodi Si Zameen... is dead serious about his film script on teenagers coming to terms with life

Ranjib Mazumder

Actor Harsh Chaya is really busy these days. Besides acting in Thodi Si Zameen, Thoda Sa Aasmaan as Smriti Irani's brother-in-law, the actor is taking time out to write a film script.

Says Harsh, "I have always been interested in writing, but it is only since the last two-and-a-half years that I have started writing this film script. It is a youth-centric concept that revolves round a few teenagers who grow up with a notion that it is very easy to achieve everything in life. And how they are disillusioned when they eventually realise that life is not a bed of roses. My characters fall in the age-bracket of 13-14 years and through them, I want to bring out the basic human emotions."

The actor is so emotionally attached to his script, that he is also thinking of directing the film himself. "I am not in a hurry to persuade the filmmakers to make a film on my script. When I was not working, writing became a good alternative for me. If possible, I would like to direct it myself," he adds.

On the professional front, the actor is getting a lot of good offers at present. "I have got good responses for my role in Thodi Si Zameen, Thoda Sa Aasmaan. Besides, I am considering many serial scripts, but it will be too early to talk as of now," he says.

London calling

Smriti Irani will feature in a British documentary film

Kunal M Shah

Sanjeev Bhaskar, an OBE award winner who is most popularly known for the show The Kumars at No 42,(he is also known as Meera Syal's husband) is currently in India shooting a documentary film for the BBC. The yet untitled documentary, which will be shown over four episodes of one hour each, showcases India as a progressive country and the changes that the country has seen in the last 60 years. The show will also interview people who have a significant hand in making India a progressive country.

Sanjeev Bhaskar informs, "I plan to complete the documentary by January 2007 in which I will be looking at different aspects which the world will connect with. The documentary will have humour as it is my strongest point as an artist. Hindi cinema and the media industry from India will also be an important aspect of the documentary which will be aired on BBC sometime next year. For this, I have just spent an entire day with Smriti Irani who is one of the most important aspects of the Indian television industry. The number of people who watch her on television everyday is probably far more than the number of people who live in a big country."

When contacted Smriti Irani said, "I have always looked up to Sanjeev and I am in awe of his work. I am privileged to be a part of his documentary. The best part about the documentary is that it encapsulates India as a progressive country on an international platform like the BBC. I take a lot of pride in representing our country through this film. Sanjeev came on my sets and I even made him play a cameo in my serial Thodi Si Zameen Thoda Aasmaan and I am glad that he agreed. I am extremely happy to be a part of few Indians who are the part of this documentary."

House arrest for Tulsi

Smriti Irani has been advised to stay at home to recover from dengue

Kunal M Shah

After a long time, Smriti Irani is taking a break from her 18-hour-work schedule to be at home. Following her dengue and typhoid attack, the actress is on the road to recovery and is currently recuperating at home having being discharged from the hospital recently.

The weakness is evident as she labours to speak, but the actress is already making plans of getting back to work shortly.

Smriti, who was unwell before Diwali, realised the extent of her indisposition only on a political tour of Ahmedabad. She was immediately admitted to a local hospital before being transferred to Lilavati hospital in Mumbai by her husband Zubin Irani.

However, Smriti is under house arrest following strict orders from her doctors who have instructed her to stay home. Smriti says, "I was discharged a couple of days ago. Right now, I am at home and on medication. I am not used to lying down and resting. I have been working for 18 to 19 hours for years now and I guess my body couldn't take it any more. At first I thought it was just a viral fever and ignored it. But, in Ahmedabad I developed a high temperature and started to shiver. Later, doctors in Lilavati told me that if I had arrived 24 hours later things would have got out of hand. I never realised the seriousness of my condition and even shouted at them to take me out of the hospital as I had to work. The doctors asked me to take one month bed rest. I have never been to the hospital except when I became a mother."

So, how is she spending her time in this recovery period? "The doctors understood immediately that I am a workaholic and will never sit still at home. So they requested me to stay home for 10-15 days. But the actor-producer in me is itching to go back to work. Let's see… I have meetings at home since I am on the verge of making a new announcement. This was the wrong time to fall ill. But illness never hits you with a prior warning."

And with this condition, Smriti has suddenly become more conscience about her health. "I now know that I was not taking good care of myself. I need to do that now. I was extremely careless about my health and I saw the tension and concern Zubin and my family members faced. I give full credit to Zubin and the doctors in Lilavati that I am back on my feet so soon."

How badly was her work schedule affected? "Thankfully, I had a bank of Thodi Si Zameen… and Santaram and Bhairavi, and the rest my creative heads took proper care of. Balaji was kind enough to understand and worked things out in my absence. People close to me are so used to seeing me being hyper active that they really had to make an effort to keep me at home. But I am just dying to get back to work."

Smriti discharged from hospital
By: Tushar Joshi
November 13, 2006

Get well soon: Smriti Iraani
Tulsi, aka Smriti Iraani, has been missing from Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi thanks to a bout of dengue. She was admitted to Lilavati Hospital last week, and was reported to be in the ICU. However, Smriti was discharged a few days back and is on her way to recovery.

Says a source close to her, "It'll take some time before she is finally declared fit. Apart from weakness, she also has to recover from the dose of antibiotics given to her. Since the illness was detected at an early stage, there were no complications."

Bed-ridden
The source adds that her family was very worried about her health when she was admitted to the hospital. "Smriti was in a terrible state when she was diagnosed with dengue. It did take time for her condition to stabilise."
Smriti has returned home now and has already started working from her bed. "I'm a complete workaholic. I know I should rest, but I have been holding creative meetings for my production at home. People tell me its difficult to keep me away from work."

The actress gives her husband Zubin full credit for supporting her. "If it had not been for him, I would have been finished. He stood by me like a rock. My husband and family are the only reason I am recovering. The doctors at Lilavati were great and made sure that I was given the right treatment."

Not many are aware that her condition worsened as she was also diagonised with typhoid. "I got a combination of dengue and typhoid. That is definitely not a good thing."

Back on my feet
When asked if she would resume work soon, Smriti says, "Hopefully, by Thursday the intra-venous drip will be removed. I am itching to get back on my feet and resume work. I also want to thank my fans for their blessings and love. It's a combination of everyone's love that has helped me survive."

Repeat telecast

Thodi Si Zameen Thoda Sa Aasman may not be doing great in the ratings stakes, but it's worth a watch, at least for the different path it treads. The protagonist is still in touch with her humble chawl roots, in spite of being married to Mr Moneybags, and it's charming to see her switch her lingo to streetspeak when she interacts with her old buddies. Sadly, any show with a different theme is still not welcomed with the same enthusiasm as a regular 'family drama'.

The art of multi-tasking
By: Sanjeet Bedi
December 2, 2006

I wonder why actors, especially those in the television industry, crib so much about working long hours, suffering various ailments and badmouth the place that is giving them so much recognition. I think it's a choice that an individual makes. No one forces a show down your throat or holds a gun to your head.

I have been blessed to work in four shows at the same time, giving me the chance to play different characters. For me, the most challenging role in recent times has been playing the tapori on Thodi Si Zameen Thoda Sa Aasman. I kept questioning myself over whether I would ever be able to play such a role and carry it off.

Apart from that, it's important to maintain a good balance between your personal and professional life.

Time management plays a critical role in helping one stay happy. Look at Hrithik Roshan. He raises the bar in each film. At the same time, he also strives to make sure he spends time with his family. I think it's up to an individual to decide where his priorities lie.

Biggest no shows of 2006
By: the Hitlist team
December 27, 2006

Different. Ground-breaking. Unusual. These were just some of the many adjectives that were used to describe these shows. But in the end, they all towed the 'been there-done that' line and ended up as the biggest turkeys of the year.

Fame X

Saw it on: SAB
Time-table: Mon-Thurs
9 pm, Friday 10 pm

Kyun nahin chala: Just like Indian Idol 2 couldn't recreate the magic of its first season, Fame X too failed in its new avatar. Trying too hard to be hip, the show fell flat in entertaining the audience in any way. The set is tacky, the judges (Daler Mehendi, Ganesh Hegde) are icy cold and the contestants too have nothing to cheer about.

How long before it shuts: With zero interest from viewers, it shouldn't be long before this Fame wraps up its game!

Left Right Left

Saw it on: SAB
Time-table: Mon-Thurs,
9.30 pm

Kyun nahin chala: Rajeev Khandelwal stepped out his comfy Sujal shoes and turned to a fresh concept to boost his sagging career. Set against the backdrop of a military school with six new faces, LRL was a welcome change for those bravely suffering saas bahu shows.

Making a debut with some stellar ratings, the show soon became tangled in the confusion of taking a risk as a youth show or playing it safe with the usual drama.

How long before it shuts: In spite of trying new formulas and twisting the plot, LRL hasn't been able to win over the audience it wooed in the beginning.

Twinkle Beauty Parlour

Saw it on: SAB
Time-table: Off air

Kyun nahin chala: Coming from the same production house that brought us Remix, this show was definitely well publicised, to say the least! The channel went on a full throttle promotion and marketing strategy with giant billboards plastered all over the city showing mustachioed women waiting for Twinkle's parlour to open.

After it started, the audience realised there was nothing funny about this series. Neither seriously dramatic nor witty, the channel gave up on this baby even before the audience could make their decision.
How long before it shuts: The show went off air within six months.

Karam Apna Apna

Saw it on: Star Plus
Time-table: Mon-Thurs, 9.30 pm

Kyun nahin chala: Touted as Balaji's next big show after Kavyanjali, this drama set against the backdrop of Kolkata, looks like it is suffering from a Parineeta hangover. Starting off on a fresh note, the show didn't take too long to walk the hackneyed road of every other K-soap. There seems to be an ongoing fight between the background music and characters to decide who is the loudest!

How long before it shuts: With Iqbal Khan already out of the show, it won't be long before the audience gives its final verdict on the karam of this show.

Akela

Saw it on: Sony
Time-table: Saturday, 10 pm

Kyun nahin chala: Promising to be thriller of sorts, Akela (like its name suggests) became a lone ranger in the slot it was put in. Neither was it engrossing nor did Sudhansu Pandey lend any charm to the project.

How long before it shuts: The buzz is that Sony plans to pull the plug off this turkey soon.

Thodi Si Zameen Thoda Sa Aasmaan

Saw it on: Star Plus
Time-table: Sunday 10 pm

Kyun nahin chala: Smriti Iraani breaking out of her Tulsi image to attempt something new was the biggest reason to tune in to this show. Starting off on a fresh note with an interesting ensemble cast, the soap soon lost its charm somewhere down the line. The weekend time slot also hampered it from reaching a wider audience.

How long before it shuts: We don't think this show will be around this time next year.

Kasa kai?

Actor Kiran Karmarkar's love for his language is being cultivated on the sets.

Mee Marathi: Kiran Karmarkar

Actor Kiran Karmarkar is a true-blue Maharashtrian, married to actress Rinku, who hails from Punjab. Due to this the actor cannot converse in his mother-tongue Marathi at home, something he sorely misses. So, the actor has made it a point to carry a transistor with him to the sets of Thodi Si Zameen Thoda Sa Asmaan and tune it to a Marathi station. He reveals, "I listen to old Marathi songs whenever I am not shooting. It is so revitalising to listen to familiar melodies. My co-stars often pull my leg for being such a sucker for Marathi."

Besides Marathi songs, the actor also tries to catch up with Marathi literature in his free time on the sets. "I am a great fan of great Marathi writers like Pu La Deshpande, P K Acharya Atre and Vinda Karanadikar and carry books written by these authors to the sets. It's great recreation when I'm not shooting and I also get to cultivate my love for literature," he says.

But that still leaves out Marathi movies. Does the actor find time for them? "I watch a lot of Marathi movies," says Kiran. "I just make time for them when I can at home."

So, is his young son inheriting his love for the language? "My son is still is just a kid. But, whenever I am at home, I try to teach him a few Marathi lessons so that he can be close to his heritage," he adds.

He never wanted to do more than one serial at a time but post Tumhari Disha Sachin Tyagi who was till recently doing only Kuch Apne Kuch Paraye suddenly finds himself doing three shows, two dailies and one weekly. Last week he made his entry in Thodi Si Zameen Thoda Sa Aasman in the role of advocate Prashant, an old friend of the Rastogi family which is fighting a court battle with Uma (Smriti Irani) for the mentally challenged Sudhanshu's custody. Sachin has no idea about the role's length but he says it is not a cameo. While he was in talks with producer Jay and Kinnari Mehta for some time for the character of Sumer who comes in Meera's life, Sachin made his dramatic entry in the show and all of a sudden ended up marrying Meera.

"It is a new twist in the story which has surprised viewers. Sumer is a fantastic character with both positive and negative shades," gushes the actor who is on a roll with three different roles in his kitty. "I really didn't want to work so much but I don't have a choice. It's difficult to say 'no' to good roles," he reasons.
