Sameer Soni rejects Smriti Irani's offer

The actor turns down the role of Smriti's brother in Thodi Si Zameen Thoda Sa Aasman

If things worked out fine, Sameer Soni, (Purab in Jassi Jaisi Koi Nahin) would have been playing Smriti Irani's younger brother in Thodi Si Zameen Thoda Sa Aasman. But when Soni rejected the role, it was offered to Pawan Shankar.

"I was offered the role, but I could not do it since I was not given proper details of the character," says Soni.

So, did he find any drawback in the character offered to him? "There was nothing negative about the character. In fact, the role was quite good. But, things just did not work out," he says.

"Ekta has been very sweet to me. She came personally to me for the role. We share a great rapport and I know she will definitely come up with some thing very exciting in the near future," he added.

But the actor has been out of the small screen for quite some time. Reason? Sameer has just completed dubbing for Sooraj Barjatya's Vivah. He has also signed Sanjay Gupta's Alibaug. "Though I am regularly getting television offers, I am busy completing my films for the time being. Television and daily soaps need a lot of time commitment and I really do not have that much time. Moreover, daily soaps stagnate after a certain point of time and then go in for a 20-year leap. I keep reading that actors are fainting on the set. It's all because of erratic work schedule and enormous pressure, which I want to avoid. I want to try something more exciting," he says.

Being blunt: Smriti Z Iraani

One thing I HATE about myself

The one thing I hate about myself is being blunt. It gets me into trouble often, but I still can't resist speaking the truth. I don't know if it's a good thing or bad, but I know it gets me into difficult situations when I stick to facts and the truth.

Parvati's Om set to woo Tulsi

Before you wonder what we are talking about, Kiran Karamarkar has been signed to play the lead opposite Smriti Irani in her new serial Thodi Si Zameen Thoda Sa Aasman. There were talks of Jackie Shroff being roped in for the role earlier but obviously that didn't happen. Even Smriti had refused to comment on the subject saying it was just a rumour. Kiran, we feel will make a good pair with Smriti. Since Smriti is Uma, will Kiran be Om again?

Smriti is Sanjit Bedi's guru
By: Tushar Joshi
September 2, 2006

Sanjit Bedi
Presently, Sanjit Bedi is doing four shows on television.

However, it is the role of Munna, a tapori in Thodi Si Zameen Thoda Sa Aasman that has got him all excited. This is the first time the actor is playing a character totally opposite to his real-life personality.

Challenging role

"Munna is something that came as a challenge to me. Smriti kept telling me how I have been playing a rich, spoilt brat till date and doing this role would be different. I realised that when I began shooting with her."

Apart from his look, that involves nothing more than a vest and an ordinary trouser, Sanjit also has to work on his tapori lingo. "The funny thing about Munna is that he is the only Gujarati Jain hitman you would ever encounter," says Bedi.

Trying hard to hide his Punjabi accent wasn't easy, but the actor has now mastered the art of being a complete bhai. "It's one of the most fun roles I have done till date. There is also tremendous hard work by the entire unit, including Smriti and the director Santaram, that goes into making Munna work."

Hard taskmaster

Smriti Z Iraani
Even though he's worked with Smriti in Kyunki, Sanjit says he's exposed to a totally different Iraani this time around. "She's my mentor, guide, philosopher and also a hard taskmaster when it comes to getting the best out of me." The actor recalls getting calls from Smrit,i who also co-produces the show along with Ekta Kapoor, telling him how to improve on his scenes.

Still so much to do

"I usually go back home from the set feeling satisfied. But with Thodi Si Zameen..., I feel like I could have done better. Smriti is one person who actually drives you into delivering your best. She's playing Uma after doing Tulsi for years, and knows that the audience expects so much from her. There's always this sense of peace in her."

Bedi doesn't shy away from saying how much he's in awe of her. But what about the buzz about her being a taskmaster and bullying her co-stars on the sets? "She is also producing the show, so one does naturally expect her to get involved in everything. In fact, watching her perform makes me realise there's so much more I have to achieve."

Reacting to the buzz about him quitting Viraasat, he says, "My role is shaping up really well on the show. I have been shooting for 10-15 days with them. I am not leaving Viraasat just yet."

Soaring high

The new entrant of Kasamh Se, Pawan Shankar wants to do more challenging roles

Actor Pawan Shankar's first serial Siddhanth received critical acclaim for its simple script, crisp direction and brilliant acting. It was even nominated to the 34th International Emmy Awards in the drama category, the first for an Indian serial to enter the finals. And since then, Pawan Shankar has moved on in life, aiming to do better than Siddhanth...

Your career graph seems to be at its peak. To what do you owe your success?
My career is definitely shaping well, but this is not the end. I have a lot more to achieve. This is just the beginning. As for whom I owe my success to, frankly, it's purely luck because everyone works hard. I have seen so many people struggling and trying to make it as an actor. Only those who are lucky succeed.

After Siddhanth, you had no projects on hand and were made object of ridicule for claiming to have lots of offers.

Yes, I was shocked to read reports that mocked me. But it's not that I didn't have offers. I had offers but they didn't work out, either due to money or date problems or production delays. Good things in life take time to develop. It's unfair to come to the conclusion that I am bragging about offers.

What do you think about your character's early exit in Aisa Des Hai Mera?

I've no hang-ups about my character's early exit. One must not forget that Rusty is the protagonist and it's her story. Moreover, I wasn't there from frame one in the serial that I should get upset about my character's exit. I was part of the serial just like other male actors are present in any other serial. The exit was smooth and done on mutual terms with Manishji (Goswami). All the same, if I am needed, I am willing to re-join the serial.

What made you take up Kasamh Se? It's an on-going serial and the characters are hugely popular. How do you think you will fit in?

Kasamh Se is a great serial. Being part of it will be advantageous for me. I know it will be quite a task to establish my character Tarun Sablok. But I didn't mind doing it because no matter how tough the competition is, it is in my hands to put in that extra effort to make my character popular.

Were you reprimanded on the sets of Kasamh Se for playing pranks.
The incident was misquoted. No such incident happened. Even the director quoted doesn't direct the show anymore. I share very good relations with my directors. I have never played pranks on the sets.

What do you think Thodi Si Zameen, Thoda Sa Aasmaan can do for your career?
It's already doing a lot for my career. My character Sanjay Apte (a trade union leader) is the next best role after Siddhanth and has taken my career to the next level. I am excited about this project. This role reasserts my stature as an actor. If an actor gets just one good role in his life, then it's a fluke. But this role reassures me of the heights I can reach.

Is Pawan Shankar Ekta's new blue-eyed boy?

SUBHASH K JHA

He came for just six episodes on Ekta Kapoor's new show Thodi Si Zameen Thoda Sa Aasmaan on Star Plus. But his character, the rebellious angry young man Sanjay Apte, made an impact. Though his character has now been bumped off as per the plot, the shy Pawan Shankar caught producer Ekta Kapoor's attention. She has cast him as the new entrant in Kasamh Se.
"I play this suave, US-returned NRI called Tarun Sablok. Ekta's brief about the character to me was that he's someone jo soch-soch ke chalta hai. She says my character is like that of Mr Bajaj in Kasautii Zindagii Kay." Pawan goes on to reveal, "Ekta has been constantly offering me roles in her serials. She also offered me Sujal, the role that made Rajiv Khandelwal an overnight star. It was so nice of Rajiv and Aamna Sharif to tell me I'd have taken their show (Kahiin To Hoga) to a different level.Unfortunately, at that time I was busy with my serial Siddhanth on Star One and I didn't want to divide my attention by doing another show."
Siddhanth in which Pawan Shankar played a conscientious lawyer immediately brought Pawan into prime-time focus. "Siddhanth is the only Indian TV show to be nominated for the prestigious Emmy awards. Though it didn't win, I'm very proud of it," says the guy from Allahabad.

Interview of the week

Jaya Bhattacharya has been a working actor in Tellywood for more than a decade now. Starting with positive roles, the actress shone better in negative roles, giving a new face to evilness as Payal in Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu thi. After a brief sabbatical, the actress is back to rock the screen once again with all new serials – Karam Apna Apna, Thodi si Zameen, Thoda Asamaan and Woh Rehne wali Mahalon ki. We decided to catch up with the bindaas lady and talk about her serials and future plans.

Q After a long break you are back on television with a bang. How do you feel?
It's great actually. In March this year I decided to take a small break because I was fed up of doing the same roles in daily soaps. I was getting tired of all this stupidity. It was very irritating and so I wanted to leave everything and go away for sometime. I was also fed-up of the kind of offers I was getting because they were all the same 'run of the mill' stuff. Well, after a long consideration I am again back on television with three new shows – Karam Apna Apna, Thodi Si Zameen, Thoda Asamaan and Wo Rahane Wali Mahalon ki. I accepted these offers as they are quite different from my previous works.

Q Let's discuss the characters in these shows?
I am playing a Punjabi character in Karam Apna Apna. I found this character very different and I was excited about playing this role. I have completed the first schedule in Kolkata and am currently shooting in Mumbai. Then there is Thodi Si Zameen, Thoda Aasmaan which I am very excited about and looking forward to. I am playing a dancer's role in this show. She lives in a Mumbai Chawl and has a very bad husband. She is a very bindaas and muhfatt (frank) kind of girl and is always ready to help others. Though she is not able to solve her own problems, she is always eager to help everyone around her and just can't ignore their tensions in life. I found the character more like me. And that was the main reason why I accepted this role.

Q You seem to have buried the hatchet with Tulsi (Smriti Irani) and share a good on-screen chemistry with her. Comment.
As you all know, Smriti and I worked together in Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi. She is a great co-star to work with. In Kyunki we were arch rivals, as I was playing a vamp in that serial. And it's great to be back with her in Thodi si… and play her friend. The feeling of sharing screen space with Smriti once again is wonderful. And I am sure people will enjoy it. Both the serials are from totally different genres.

Q You have played Bengali characters in a couple of Balaji serials. Is it because you yourself are of Bengali origin?
It's not true. I think I am ready to play any character where I fit in well. I never worry about whether the character is Bengali, Punjabi or of any other race. Where I played a Bengali character in Kkavyanjali and Kammal, I am also playing a Punjabi lady in Karam Apna Apna.

Q You have worked in a couple of films as well. Why have you given films a backseat?
I have never given films a back seat. I never planned to work in only films or only serials. It was my destiny, which has brought me here. Whatever came my way, I accepted it. I got few offers from films and I took them up. If something new comes, I will definitely consider.

Q Any new project you are currently doing?
Currently I am concentrating more on my new shows, which are on air right now. And I will not work on too many projects at the same time. I did it in the past and have already suffered the consequences then.

Kiran Karmarkar returns

Actor Kiran Karmarkar will debut in 'Thodi Si Zameen Thoda Sa Aasmaan'(Star Plus) on September 16 in a role very different to his earlier appearances on television. Returning to the small screen after a year, Kiran says he has returned fresh and recharged.

He plays the role of a mentally challenged man, Sudhansu Jajodia. The eldest son of one of the richest business families in Mumbai, Sudhansu is a victim of a devious plot. After his mother's death, he is drugged since childhood so that he can't stake claim to his father's property.

Saying that there are many ways to essay this character, Kiran says, "We are working as a team to portray this very different to what has been seen earlier. He will not been shown as a mad and dumb man. It is challenging to step into the shoes of such a character as I am associated with sober and subtle performances. I am particularly looking forward to the twist in the show, again something which has never been shown on TV."

Kiran has done a lot of theatre during this break and has learnt a lot. "When theatre experts point out your mistakes, it gives me scope to improvise and become a better actor. When you are famous on television, one is led to believe that one is the best. And, I learnt that I was not. I left acting because I was saturated and tired of working," he says.

"Acting is worship to me and acting for the sake of acting was unacceptable to me. Smriti had called me to do Harsh Chhaya's role in this very serial but that did not work out. And, I am happy to join the cast with this role. The team is trying to move away from the usual successful formula and that is another reason for me to accept this role," says an excited Kiran.

Kiran gears up for his new innings!

Kiran Karmarkar, fondly remembered as Om of Kahaani Ghar Ghar Ki is on seventh heaven! Apart from his long awaited character (mentally ill son) in Star Plus'sThodi Si Zameen Thoda Sa Aasman, he will soon be seen donning a new avataar in Sony's Man Mein Hai Vishwas' next episode and Star One's Saathi Re.

Talking about Man Mein......, Kiran explains "It's a true story about a couple who are unable to conceive a child. The wife requests her husband (a doctor by profession) to visit the Haji Ali Baba, who is well known for his miracles, but then he refuses to do so. Months later the wife gives birth to a child and things change," explains Kiran. He further adds, "It's basically about how I (the husband) start believing in God."

"I am an atheist," avers Kiran and taking up this role was nothing less than a challenge for the actor. "I don't believe in God, and am playing someone who starts believing in Him. It came across as a very challenging role as it's totally different from what my perspective is. It takes me on another level of acting altogether," states Kiran.

He is not only very excited about his entry in Thodi Si.. this week, but also charged up about his new daily Saathi Re on Star One (earlier titled as Saptapadi). "I play father to the female protagonist, and my character is on the lines of Hitler. She goes to the extent of asking me, mogambo khush hua?" says the actor. Saathi Re is about a girl who is caught between two guys, and faces a problem with her kundali. The show also features Arjun Punjj, Aamir Dalvi and debutant Parakh Madan.

Other than television, Kiran keeps doing theatre on and off. This talented actor has definitely blocked his appointment diary post the Om-act!

The Omcoming

Kiran Karmarkar talks about his comeback role in Thodi Si Zameen Thoda Sa Aasmaan

Sapana Patil Poojary

You quit Kahani Ghar Ghar Kii after you had an apparent problem with Balaji Telefilms. What made you return to the same production house?
It can be quite frustrating to sit at home, jobless. Thodi Si… is a good project and when I was offered the role, I decided to grab it. This plot is different in terms of quality, direction and casting.

You have not been active for more than a year. What kept you busy in that time?

I deliberately wanted to stay away from television for a while. I had worked continuously for five years and needed a break. I couldn't take the stress any more. So I restricted myself to doing cameos. I kept myself busy doing plays like Kacche Lamhe and Mera Naam Joker and so on. Plus, I was not well for some days and was admitted to the ICU. Now, I am fit and fine.

Yet, you must have received a lot of offers...

Yes, I did receive a lot of exciting offers, but I refused. Smriti Irani had called me in December last year for Thodi Si… At that time, I refused because I didn't want to work at all. Eventually Harsh Chhaya was roped in for the role. However, she called me again and this time I was offered the role of Sudanshu Jajodia, a mentally challenged man. It seemed interesting and I agreed.

Did you ever repent losing out on good roles?

For me, health is wealth. It was my decision to take a break and I didn't regret it.

So how is the experience playing a mentally challenged character?

This is for the first time I am playing such a difficult role the first time. But I am a director's actor and will soon get under the skin of the character.
