Kajol is shown stuck in a position that actually many girls face in many parts of India but it is mostly the male child who is the favourite and the girl who is treated as second class citizen. In small towns and villages and even in big cities this dual reality still exists.
But seeing it on screen albeit less vicious as the other favoured child too is female our sensibilities are affected and we lash out at the female protagonist for not speaking up without realising that it is very difficult to take a stand against ones own family when we have been emotionally and monetarily dependent on them. The misogyny inherently ingrained in us through socialization is so subtle that we do not notice our own toxic approach.
Yes we tend to blame Kajol without realising her helplessness, for Kajol this is her Arjuna moment from Mahabharat where Krishna bhagwan had to give Arjuna, Geeta ka gyan about standing up against his kin for the right cause or dharma. I guess Anurag has to be Krishna to Kajol's Arjuna. Anurag is portrayed as more understanding than us the audience.
Your post made me think of the the Actresses round table with Rajeev Masand where Rani Mukherjee talked about how it is the women's fault for not fighting back or it is weak if a woman does not speak up when sexually harassed or assaulted without trying to understand that not every woman is privileged enough to believe that when they speak up, they will be believed and not blamed as if they asked for it. And the truth be told 90% of the time it is the woman who will face societal scorn and be shamed for telling the the truth and demanding justice.
Very thought provoking post @dilwale and @arivarshi
Having not watched the 1st 15 episodes I am going by the written write up on colors daily updates and on this forum & the rest I have then seen myself.
I always took it to be that the story of Kajol would begin the day Vishu died & she took over the running of home and forging relationships - at least that's how Colours promotes the story.
I have seen enough of the episodes going forward to see a character breakdown and for myself I have always advocated patience as I do believe writers will still make good on her character...but what happens is that sometimes we are impatient and we want change to happen overnight...
I believe the writers are attempting to show her struggles and right now she us shown as being weak and vulnerable...I dont see her as being weak, it shows strength to go to work when she has never worked, to get back the love and respect from her mother ; and her sister; to attempt to repair relationships and forge new ones..and its not surprising she cries; she us publicly attacked, her character questioned time and time again; plus is still grieving from Vishus death, his support and love but she is moving on with life because she does not have the time or luxury to stop.
I do believe that when Kajol will fully allow Anurag's support to come through when she enters onto the next phase of their relationship we will see the strength in her emerge - its not happening at a fast pace, its a slow nuance & in the mean time the actors / actresses get ill; scenes have to be rewritten or revised
Unless the plot line completely changes then I still think that we will get the story Colours tv started with. I am for one willing to see her evolution though its slow going at times from where she is now to where she will be heading to; a woman who has a career; is capable if running a business, is able to forge & maintain relationships, is a wife, lover & partner and honours her commitments to her parental family as well as her new family - lets see what happens..right now Kajol is on the cusp of entering unchartered territory; the loss of her family and finding her strength
