1st: Everyone's favorite villian, Sivagami

Sivagami obviously cares for Archana the most- a fact that is pointed out by even her other daughters. And she is almost totally emotionally dependent on Archana. Her whole life throughout the serial revolves around making Archana happy. In her opinion, Selvam is not worthy of Archana. Initially, Selvam lied about his occupation to her and she felt that she ruined her daughter's life because of that. Most of the time int he 1st part of the serial, she behaved in a very mean, cruel and disgusting way to Selvam becuase she feels he will not make Archana as happy as she could be if Archana had married an engineer or doctor mappilai.

Imagine if your friend or sister or daughter was dating or married to someone who you think is completely wrong for her. That is how Sivagami felt. In additon, later on, Selvam slapped her in front of everyone and kicked her out of his shop when she insulted Siva. That gives her an even lower impression... Plus, if you add Jayanthi to the mix, you can pretty much understand why Sivagami still doesn't like Selvam.

She is obviously COMPLETELY wrong about Selvam's character. Either she doesn't see his good side (because of the situation and because of people like Jayanthi) or she doesn't want to admit that he is good and she was wrong (since she has a HUGE HUGE ego).

Now, for most of the serial, Sivagami thought Archana still loved her the best. Recently, she finds that Archana may care equally or maybe even more for Selvam. And to her, Selvam is still not worthy. Now imagine if that a close friend, sister or daughter is in love with a person you think is really really really bad, wouldn't you try to stop her from making a mistake? That's what Sivagami is trying to achieve here... She thinks that Archana's feelings will eventually make her miserable since Selvam and his family are "dangerous" and wants to protect and keep Archana safe.

Sinagmi is ultimately willing to use just about every weapon she has to protect her chella-ponnu from "making a huge mistake"... So, she emotionally blackmails her daughter who she knows is very obedient. She got the sathiyam that she wanted. She is happy her daughter is keeping the promise because she feels her daughter will be safe and better off away from Selvam and his fmaily.

2nd: Thirumathi Selvam herself

Archana always knows that her mom will love her the best out of everyone else. On the other hand, she knows that while Selvam also deeply cares for her, he gives his family the most importance, even over her. From her point of view, if she even just says she will leave her amma for Selvam, her mother will probably get a heart attack and die. On the other hand, Selvam is already living without her and has told her to her face (during the thani kudithanam argument where he kicked her family out of the house) that he only lives for his family.

She knows that while neither she or Selvam will be happy if they don't see each other again, they would still carry on with their lives for the sake of their families. Selvam and Archana can survive the pain of losing each other. But, Sivagami will not survive the pain of losing Archana. Like in the Kathalukku Mariyathai movie, Archana is making a big sacrifice for the sake of her mom (who cares toooo much for her).

At least that was the case before. But now that she knows Selvam may die, maybe she will choose to visit him and hide it from her mom... Wonder what she will do...
