Early morning, before class, Shubba, wearing a beautiful pink anarkali chudithar, is working on a reaction in the lab. Ratna peeps into the room and sees that no one is there, except Shubba. Gathering his courage, he enters the room and slowly without making a sound, walks towards her. She is busy observing a reaction change and doesn't notice him coming from behind her.
Ratna, "Boo!"
Shubba screams and drops the beaker in the sink and it explodes and the liquid splashes on Ratna.
Shubba, "Aah! Sorry!" Wiping off the liquid from his shirt as he admires her.
Shubba looks at him and becomes angry, "Are you nuts?! What would have happened if it was an acid or some dangerous chemical?"
Ratna, "What are you doing here this early?"
Shubba, "Athu...illa...chumma...I was getting ready for class."
Ratna, "hmm...Lab attendant, Jeya ku therinja ena agumnu theriyumla?"
Shubba, "Aiyoo...venam. Don't tell anyone! Veetula ponnu paka varanga, athan seikrama a project a panita; mathiyanathukula veetuku poirulamnu...",
Ratna, "Hm...seri, mappila ethir maniku vararu?"
Shubba, "Evening 6o'clock."
Ratna, "Appo oru deal. Ein kuda va", holding her hands and dragging her out of the lab to the parking stand. Guys and girls around the college look at them. Shubba feels uneasy, while Ratna takes his bike and orders her to sit. Shubba, "Aiyada! Azha paru. Enala mudiyathu." and she starts walking. Ratna holds her hand and pulls her towards him firmly that she falls on him; her head hitting his shoulders. "Ow!"
He whispers to her, "Ippo eira poriya? illa? antha Jeya a pathi theriyumla? semester exam ezhutha mudiyathu, parents a kuttitu varanum...Eiru."
A little scared, looking around and finding that everyone was doing their job and not noticing them, she agrees to go on the bike with him. They go out of the college. They drive away along the highway in the outskirts of the city. Sun's rays, over the landscape light every blade of grass and leaf. Shubba looks around and finds that they are going in a direction that she didn't know.
"Ratna! Enga poram? Stop!"
"Una kadathitu pogala. So don't worry."
Shubba is confused and even more confused when Ratna takes a right turn on a narrow pathway. It is a short journey and they come to a lake. Shubba gets down and looks around. Thick trees on one side and a clear sky with a mountainous backdrop on the other. There is a small, narrow wooden bridge leading to a small wooden cottage in the center of the lake.
Shubba, "Is this? Is this Kakka Kakka shooting spot?"
Ratna, "Correct a kandupidichitiya! Va!"
Pulling her and walking forward towards the bridge. Shubba just releases from his grip. annoyed and shy at the same time. Ratna looks at her with a sly smile. Shubba continues walking on the bridge, not wanting to hold on to Ratna. The old bridge creeks and shakes at her step, that she looses her grip and Ratna holds her. Both of them share a moment in each other's eyes.
Shubba, "Ena vidu!"
Ratna, "Nee than ena pidichitu iruka."
On a moment of realisation, Shubba lets go and there is an awkward silence. Ratna just walks ahead and enters the house followed by Shubba, curiously.
Shubba, "Why did you bring me here?"
Ratna, "Huh?", giving back a sly smile that fear strikes Shubba and bizarre thoughts come to her. Facing Jeya's wrath sounded better now. She entered the house carefully, knowing very well she was going to regret it. Maybe she should have listened to her mother and not come to college at all today.
She looked at the sparkling clean, beautiful house in awe. Ratna looked at her and smiled, "Come in. This is my favourite place. From today let's be friends. This is just my way of celebrating the beginning of our friendship. Sit down", offering her a chair. Shubba sat down silently, not knowing how to react. Ratna continued, "Coke or coffee?"
Shubba, "No, thanks."
Ratna, "StarBucks Frappucino?"
Well that was something she souldn't resist and she nodded yes. Both of them shared casual friendly talks about their interests and time passed. After a while, Shubba, "I'm feeling sleepy. I don't know why...I think we should go back to college. I can go home." shaking her head and not realising why she was feeling dizzy. Ratna, "Ok!", and he got up. Shubba tried to get up but couldn't. She was feeling very dizzy and couldn't stand up and he had to help her up. The last thing she remembered was she was in his arms before she blacked out.
She woke up to find herself back at home in her bed. She tried remembering the last thing that she could. All she could remember was Ratna. What did he do? Why was she back home? She woke up amd looked out of the window. It was getting dark. She took the clock on her night stand. 6:30pm. The groom was to come at 6. What had happened? What a blunder she had done by deciding to go with him? She walked out of the room slowly; not knowing what was the circumstances outside. Cautiously she opened the door and came out. Her room was in the first floor and she could hear voices on the ground floor. She silently peeped to see what was going on. Her heart stopped to see her whole family and another family, probably the groom's sitting and chatting. Most horrifyingly, Ratna was sitting in the center.
Her mother, Shobi, "Manichirunga mappila. Ithu veraikum ipdi nadanthathei illa."
Mappila? Ratna? What?
Ratna, "Parava illa athe. Enaku unga ponna romba pidichuruku. Shubba a vida oru nalla manaivi enaku kadaika matanga."
Shobi, "Athu unga perunthanma, mappila."
Shubba looked at the happenings confused to the core. Suddenly the twins of the house, Shamz and Tanu notices Shubba, "Chitti! Akka vanthachu!" Everyone turn to look at Shubba who was looking all the more blank. Shubba turns to look at them and gives them her stare, that both of them start giggling and run away.
Shobi, annoyed, stands up and goes to her and whispers, "Ai. Arivu illa?"
Shubba, "Huh?"
Shobi, "Ipdiya varuva? Poi patu pudava mathitu va?"
Ratna, "Illa athai. Avunga ipdi irunthalum azhaguthan. Epdiyum veetula ipdithena iruka poranga? Athu la ethuku patu pudava?"
Shubba looks speechlessly at Ratna who winks at her back.
Shobi smiles at her mappila and then turns to Shubba and glares at her before going and sitting in her chair. Shubba stares at him not knowing what to do.
Before she could react, the marriage was fixed for the following month when their exams got over.
Night before their marriage, kalyana madapam; motta madi. Shubba dressed up elegantly looking up at the moon. Mehandhi drying on her hands. Ratna comes there.
Ratna, "Shubba, romba azhaga iruka."
She just smiles.
He continues, "Kaila maruthoni enum azhaga iruku."
Shubba, "Apdiya? Ena vida maruthoni azhaga iruka?"
Ratna, "Aiyoo! Apdi nan sollala..aha..romba careful a irukanum pola."
Both of them laugh.
Suddenly Shubba asks, "Anaiku...anaiku...anga...ena achu?"
Ratna, "Enaiku?...aha? oh...anaika? hm..atha nalaiku ithei neram solluren. Bye for now!", he winks at her and laughs at her astonished face and walks out. Shubba stares blankly after him.
Anga ena nadathathunu sollunga Mr. Ratna and Mrs. Shubba Ratna😛!
