So, why should Elena stand in a desert with a scorching sun and hope for rain? The answer is in the question - HOPE. The hope of seeing her Stefan back who would just put his arms around her , put his cheek on her head and she would feel at home. The hope that their love is stronger than a 1000 Klaus put together. The hope that Damon wants to hold on to inspite of his cynicism . The hope that Lexi gave Elena. Above all the Stefan's Elena inside Elena who simply refuses to let go of Stefan.
If you look at it , right now, Stefan is a lost cause - it is insanity in the practical human understanding to want what Elena wants. How do you hunt for a human being in a monster who is drowned in blood? How do you hold on to the love of a man when everytime he looks at you , you don't see the love in his eyes that was your reason to love and hope? Elena is not an angel, she is not a superhuman and its easy for her to give up. She is an ordinary girl with an extraordinary love for a man but that man himself is the genesis of this extraordinary love. When he himself is lost , how can Elena's roots not be shaken? She told Stefan categorically that she wants his help in getting him back - that she cannot love a ghost for the rest of her life. She wants to love a Stefan who is real , flesh and blood and not a distant memory of an angel that he used to be.
The roads are open for Elena. Stefan , in his RIPPER mind has already released her. She can either go against all the proclamations and declarations of undying love and choose an easy path that takes her to a safer future . She can just admit that her weakness and her human breaking points are bigger than her love for Stefan. Or else, she can take the road less traveled and fight Stefan for Stefan until the monster dissolves into the angel and she gets him back. Isn't that what true love and soulmates are all about?
As for Stefan, well, the angel and the demon inside him continue to play musical chairs and you know how lost and exhausted he is. When Elena tells him that she remembers how much Stefan used to care, his smirk goes away and he looks here and there as he lectures Elena about moving on. Why should he care if Elena grows old and dies pining for him? He is a heartless ripper. But he cares. When Stefan sees Damon tortured by Mason, he goes and takes out the log from his stomach and snaps the iron clutcher. Why should he? He could have just laughed off and walked away but he doesn't. When he finally believes that Elena will give up on him now, he should be smirking and grinning but there is a exhausted sadness and gloom on his face. Why? When Elena holds his face and sermonizes him, he should have given in to the hunger instinct and bit her neck off but he didn't. The look he gave Elena when she told him that if he doesn't try , he will lose her showed that the thought of losing Elena still pierces through his ripper heart.
Point being that Stefan is still in there and in Lexi's words, Elena needs to arrive at a breakthrough and convince Stefan to turn his humanity back on. And that is a HERCULEAN JOB. What we need to see now is if Elena is a limited human being or a limited human being with a limitless love and endurance for Stefan.
And as a great episode comes to an end, we see that the Stelena necklace ( its almost like that piece of jewel traveled through centuries , through originals and others to belong to Stefan and Elena ) stands the test of fire. And as we juxtapose the scene of Lexi telling Stefan that the necklace always give him hope and the scene of the necklace sitting intact through a ritual fire , we get the message that if this necklace can stand the test of fire , so will Stefan and Stelena's love. Someday , this necklace will go back to Stefan and Elena as the symbol of love and not a magnet center of cosmic energies. Someday...
Love and luck always,❤️
GOD bless everyone. 🤗
