Caroline is a friend of Elena and Bonnie. Her mother is Liz Forbes, town sheriff and member of the Founders Council, with whom she has an antagonistic relationship. Caroline starts the series as a superficial and self centered character, often jealous of Elena. She initially falls for Damon and learns of his true nature while under compulsion; she is freed by Elena and Stefan when Damon attempts to kill her. Due to the compulsion, she remembers nothing that she originally learned about the Salvatore brothers. Later, Caroline begins dating Matt Donovan, Elena's ex boyfriend, although she struggles with jealousy of Elena and Matt's history because Matt is still not over Elena. Over time, Caroline learns to be a more accepting, kinder person, and comes to understand that Matt is committed to her, though occasionally frustrated by her tendency to be overly dramatic. In the first season finale, Tyler, Matt and Caroline are in a car accident in which she is left in critical condition.
In season two, Caroline is given Damon's blood to help her heal after Bonnie urges Damon to save her despite Elena's initial disapproval. While still hospitalized, Katherine suffocates Caroline with a pillow, killing her while Damon's blood is still in her system, thus turning her into a vampire. By feeding on a hospital blood bag, Caroline completes her transition and all previous compulsion is erased, leaving her with the knowledge of how and why she became a vampire. She is later seen at the Mystic Falls Carnival feeding on a carnival worker after being tempted to attack Matt. Damon tries to kill her to avoid further complications, but Stefan stops him and promises to take responsibility for her. Stefan then teaches Caroline how to live on a non-human diet and how to control her blood lust, which she does to stop herself from feeding on Matt after he tells her he loves her. This is short-lived, however, as she bites Matt and attempts to feed on him when they were kissing during "Bad Moon Rising". She is stopped by Stefan before doing any major damage and Caroline erases Matt's memory to cover up her mistake, but is left wracked with guilt over her lack of control. To protect him, Caroline provokes Matt into an argument so that he ends the relationship himself. However, Katherine uses Caroline's feelings for Matt as leverage in order to force Caroline into spying on Stefan and Elena; she confesses this to Elena in "Kill or Be Killed" and at that time must also come to terms with her mother's rejection as Liz has just discovered Caroline's true nature. Caroline becomes closer to Tyler Lockwood, who is a werewolf, and the two of them bond over their supernatural identities. Tyler is a star athlete at Mystic Falls High, and presumed to be somewhat of a ladies man (he is shown flirting with another girl while Vicki, one of his conquests, is in the hospital following an attack by Damon). He is also the son of the Mayor, who is shown several times verbally and physically abusing Tyler, and he has a talent for sketches. At the end of Season One, Tyler is affected by the Gilbert Device and it is not learned until season 2 the reason is because Tyler, along with his father, carry the werewolf gene. However for the gene to be activated the carrier must take a life, only killing someone will activate the curse of the werewolf and from then on would become a wolf on a full moon. Tyler's uncle is later seen telling him about how he activated the curse. It happened when Mason accidentally killed someone in self defense. Tyler is warned to beware of killing anyone even if by accident, because the curse will be triggered. He is later seen inviting Jeremy and two girls named Aimee Bradly and Sarah to his house to have some fun. There he sees some pictures that Jeremy drew about wolves. He quickly becomes suspicious, and corners Jeremy, and asks him why he drew those pictures. Jeremy says that it was because he knows what he is. Tyler is later seen holding the moon stone in his hand while speaking with Jeremy, when Aimee and Sarah barge in and Aimee takes the stone and hands it to Sarah. Sarah runs up to the staircase and Tyler chases her, and accidentally pushes her down the stairs. Terrified that he might have killed her, Tyler stares at her and Aimee notices she is not moving. Sarah then gets up unharmed by the fall, much to Jeremy and Tyler's relief. Tyler is later seen with Mason telling him that he wants nothing to do with the curse and never wants to feel that way again. In the episode "Masquerade," however, the curse is finally triggered: Tyler parties with Sarah and Matt at the ball, and Matt- under Katherine's compulsion- taunts Tyler about his father and tries to fight him; Caroline intervenes, but Sarah- who is also shown to be compelled by Katherine- stabs Tyler with a knife, and he instinctively pushes her away. She hits her head on a table and dies, and Tyler's eyes turn yellow, indicating that he is now under the curse. During the episode entitled "Rose" Tyler confronts Caroline in an attempt to find out how she knew about him. Tyler assumes Caroline is a werewolf like him, to which Caroline laughs. Tyler then attempts to force Caroline's hand by pushing her against the wall in an attempt to get her to fight back. Tyler then finds out that Caroline is a vampire through her own admission. In episode 10 titled "Sacrifice" Tyler is seen with Caroline as she attempts to help him deal with the fast approaching full moon. Tyler discovers a journal left behind by his uncle Mason, in which he chronicles his first transformation into a werewolf. He also finds a recording of the event to play on his laptop. After seeing the intense pain that Mason experienced during his first transformation, Tyler becomes very worried. In "By the Light of the Moon" Tyler and Caroline prepare for the full moon together, they go to the old Lockwood property (where Mason was first going to change in "Bad Moon Rising") and chain Tyler up. Caroline and Tyler wait until finally Tyler begins to change, Tyler yells at Caroline to go but she refuses holding him against her and whispering encouraging words, until she is forced to leave when Tyler tries to kill her. While he still changing Caroline cries helplessly outside not knowing how to help him. After the change is over and Tyler is back to his human form Caroline rushes back in (the room is completely destroyed) and again Caroline is seen to be holding him in the same way. Caroline is shown to be very happy and relieved saying "You're ok, you made it, you didn't get out, you're ok!" But Tyler replies "No I'm not." It is implied at the end of the episode that they have feelings for one another.
