Chapter Ten

They always loved teasing each other about their tastes in movies. He took a deep breath as he went up the walkway to Sudhir Kumar's house. It still looked the same. He had dressed carefully for this. He wore the kind of clothes he would normally wear to the office, a perfect three piece.

He was planning things that he would say to Mr. Sudhir when he met him. 'I'm not the loser you once thought I was.' He planned to himself.

The truth was that her dad had always liked him, up until Bharti had become pregnant.

Water under the bridge, Fahad kept repeating in his mind as he kept taking deep breaths to calm himself down. It's four years later and it's time to forgive and forget.

He rang the doorbell as he held onto a box of her dad's favorite cake from the local bakery. He hadn't forgotten.

He was surprised when an attractive, older woman came to the door. She smiled at him. "Can I help you?"

He returned her smile. "Is Mr. Kumar home?"

"Sudhir's in Bangalore right now. Can I help you with anything?" She seemed very warm and friendly to him.

"I hope so. I'm here visiting from Dehradun. I came to see Mr. Kumar because I used to date his daughter and..."

"Oh my God." She put her hand over her mouth in a gesture of disbelief.

"You're Fahad?"

He nodded. "That's right. How did you know?"

She began to cry. "This is too much. Sudhir is in Bangalore visiting Bharti right now. He's been gone for more than a week now."

"Oh God. You mean, Bharti is... she's okay?"

"Of course she is. I spoke to her on the phone several times already. She's such a sweetheart.

Oh dear. Forgive me. I'm Maya, Sudhir's friend. Please, come in." She held the door open for him.

"Thank you." He stepped inside. The house looked the same. He wondered if Bharti's bedroom was still the same. Had her father kept it the way she had or had he gotten rid of anything that was hers? They had spent hours in her bedroom watching movies, doing homework and studying, making out. He missed that. He missed her.

"I can't believe you're here," Maya told him. "This is all just too much."

He held the cake out to her. "Is Bharti, I mean... how is she?"

"She's fine. She lives in in an complex with her daughter Kiya."

"Kiya," he repeated the name softly. Tears came into his eyes. "I have a daughter. That's my daughter too."

"Oh Fahad, I'm really sorry. I forgot. I didn't realize... oh dear. Come into the kitchen and I'll make you some tea."

Tears spilled down his cheeks. "My daughter," he repeated.

"Would you like to see some pictures of her?"

He nodded. "Yes, please."

They went into the kitchen and Maya put up water for tea. She gave Fahad the note that Bharti had sent to her father along with the pictures of Kiya. He didn't know whether to read the letter first or look at the pictures. He looked at the pictures because he was so curious to see what his daughter looked like.

"She's beautiful," he whispered as he gazed at the pictures of Kiya. "Oh God, she is so beautiful."

"Yes, she is," Maya agreed as she brought a couple of mugs to the table. "Sudhir says she's absolutely gorgeous and a perfect angel too. Bharti's done a good job raising her."

"I knew that she would. She's such a special person."

He read the letter that she wrote to her father. He looked at Kiya's pictures again and then he read the letter a second time.

He began to cry then. It was all too much to take. He missed Bharti. He wanted to hold her in his arms.

"It's okay, beta." Maya put her arms around him. "I understand how you feel."

"I miss her so much. Is she... she's not married, is she?"

"No, but she does have a boyfriend. Well, there's this man that she sees. He likes her very much and wants it to be more but she prefers to remain friends with him. Sudhir told me about him. He's a lecturer, a very nice man but he can see that he's not the one for her. They're neighbors and he spends a lot of time with them. Oh, Fahad, Sudhir says that he feels terrible for the way he acted with you too. He and Bharti have gotten so close with each other since he went to see her. He hasn't even wanted to come back home. He's so happy being with her and the baby. He's been trying to convince her to move back to Mumbai."

He suddenly stood up. "I'm going to Bangalore, Miss. Maya. I'm leaving right now. I have to see her. I just have to. I can't let another moment pass by. Will you come with me?"

"But, Fahad, Bangalore is so... I mean... you're serious, aren't you? Oh dear. Of course I'll go with you. I do miss Sudhir. He's been gone for almost two weeks now. Oh, of course I'll go with you. Let me get my purse and we can leave."

Fahad looked down at Kiya's pictures again. "Papa's coming, sweetie," he whispered. "Papa's coming."

Her father really missed his child. No parent can bear the separation from their kids. Their love for their kids sometimes makes them selfish bcoz they never want their child to suffer anything. I really feel bad for those parents and kids who do not or are not being able to converse with each other bcoz of some misunderstanding.

Yes you will be able to see more of their bonds with further chapters😳
