Chapter 9
Thapki was really excited about her engagement shopping but when Dadi told her that Preeti will go with her, all her excitement turned into anxiety. Suman was the only person besides Dadi with whom she felt really comfortable. But Suman was busy with the preparation at home as it was such a short noticed function. The whole arrangement was done in the big lawn of PN. Around 100+ guests were expected and they all were big names so the arrangement needed to be perfect.
As per Dadi's instructions Thapki was moved into Kiran's room. She did not welcome her well but also did not say anything. Dadi had warned her from saying anything or her heavy pocket money from Dadi would be stopped. Kiran could not afford to lose that so she stayed quiet. Thapki did not have much stuff so some of her clothes and daily use stuff was brought into Kiran's room. Thapki was now getting ready to go for shopping. She and Preeti were to go to bazaar where Bihaan was to join them directly from office. Bihaan did not want to go but he could not say no to Dadi.
Preeti who was fond of shopping was excited to buy her own stuff and had no intentions of helping out Thapki in choosing anything. Both Thapki and Preeti left for Bazaar and reached the big Mall where Bihaan was already waiting for them at one big jewellery shop.
Bihaan: "What took you so long??? I have taken few hours off from office and have to go back to work"
Preeti: "Sorry Bihaan devar ji... we got stuck in traffic"
Bihaan: "Okay now come hurry up. Don't waste any more time"
They all moved towards the main counter where the shop keeper was sitting. He greeted them and took them to the special counter.
Shopkeeper: "Bihaan Ji congratulations. Dadi Maa called me and told me abt ur engagement ceremony. Who is the lucky girl??"
Bihaan: "Thanks Gautam Ji... Well that LUCKY GIRL is standing right in front of u. Meet Thapki"
Thapki who was not used to meeting strangers was very nervous.
Shopkeeper: "Oh acha so this is Thapki Ji. She is very simple. I was expecting some one like Shradha Bhabhi"
Preeti chuckled. Thapki noticed it as she was standing next to her. She felt very sad.
Bihaan: "Now show a simple ring for this simple girl"
Shopkeeper: "Na na Bihaan Ji...Dadi Maa called me and asked me to show very special rings to u and Thapki Ji"
The price range he mentioned just made Thapki jump with shock.
Thapki: "No no I do not want this much expensive ring. Show me sthg cheap"
Shopkeeper laughed at Thapki's innocence.
Shopkeeper: "Thapki Bhabhi u should not worry and select from the one I am showing, otherwise Dadi Maa will not spare me"
Thapki nervously looked at Bihaan who signalled with his hand to go and select a ring. Thapki had never bought anything this expensive. The only expensive jewellery she had was that diamond nose ring gifted by her mother. Buying a diamond ring worth more than hundred thousand was not an easy job for her. She looked at the big box holding so many rings and felt even more nervous. She looked towards Preeti for help but she was already busy in choosing some jewellery for her own self. Bihaan suddenly sensed the hesitation in Thapki and came forward for help.
Bihaan: "Choose sthg that u like and that fits ur finger. Show me ur hand"
Thapki held her hand in front of Bihaan. Bihaan looked at her hand and admired her neat and clean hands. Her fingers were long and pretty. She indeed had pretty hands. Bihaan took his eyes from her beautiful hand and looked at the box carrying rings.
Bihaan: "Now try that ring... the one in the corner"
Thapki took that ring out with extra care and tried it. The ring was a bit loose for her finger.
Bihaan: "Okay leave this and try the one next to it"
Thapki took that ring out and tried it. The ring was a fit. Bihaan looked at her and asked
Bihaan: "So should we go with this one???"
Thapki did not say anything but tried one more ring. It was a pretty ring with one big diamond and 4 small diamonds around it. The sizes of the diamonds were perfect and it was also a perfect fit in Thapki's finger. She simply looked at him and he who was admiring her choice simply nodded yes. Thapki got happy.
Shopkeeper also praised her choice which made Preeti come and have a look at the ring. She also loved the ring but did not say much but that it was just an okay ring.
Before they left the shop, the shopkeeper gave another jewellery box to Thapki saying it was a small gold set for engagement ceremony ordered by Dadi Maa on phone. Thapki opened the box. It was a small but very delicate gold set with a necklace and beautiful ear rings. Thapki thanked Dadi Maa in her heart.
They left the shop and went towards the side where formal dresses shops could be found. Preeti took them to a shop that had ready made formal dresses. Thapki had no idea wat to wear in an engagement ceremony so she looked at every thing with a blank face. Preeti took Bihaan towards gents section to buy him kurta. The sales girl noticed a nervous Thapki and asked to help. Thapki told her abt the occasion. She took her to one corner. She showed her different dresses. Thapki liked one tea pink lehnga with matching choli. Thapki was sent into the try room for trial. The dress needed some little alterations. Thapki waited for Preeti and Bihaan to return but even after 30 mins there was no sign of them. Thapki had no money on her and she could not pay the bill. Thapki had finally started to get worried. She came out of the shop to search for Preeti and Bihaan. They were no where in sight. The shopping Mall was quiet big and she had never been alone in this much crowd. She searched for 20 mins and finally got lost. She could not even remember where that dress shop was. She was abt to cry when some one put a hand on her shoulder and said
Voice from back: "Thapki u here?? Wat r u doing here all alone??? Arre don't be nervous... after all I am not a stranger but a closed one"
