"Great! "
He muttered sarcastically as he got down from the car. Being with them was the last thing he wanted. But of course destiny loves to play her most hilarious games with him. Dhruv Pandey was her favourite play toy. He kicked an empty can lying on the road trying hard not to listen to the conversation his companions were having. There wasn't anything he wouldn't give in his power to be able to go away frpm them but he was stuck
"Bihan Pandey and Thapki Bihan Pandey ! "
He felt guilty at the resentment in his voice but then the moment passed. He needn't feel guilty after all he was the one who was wronged. The resentment was justified even if it was towards his brother and his wife. He was stuck with them. He,Shradha, Bihan and Thapki had gone on a party at his grandmother's insistence. Shradha had met a friend and her husband and had to leave with them at her friend's request. That had left him to endure the torturous journey alone with Thapki and Bihan. To add to his bad luck their car broke down and they were stuck in the middle of no where.
Presently
they were waiting for the mechanic to arrive. It was a remote area and night time making it hard for him to reach. Suffocated by the awkwardness at least from his part and their oblivious banter he had stepped out of the car to breath. Seeing that it was pointless to avoid their conversation he gave up.
" wh- what are you doing Bbihan ? Stop this childishness. Thapki's hushed voice laced with annoyance piqued his interest
" I am dancing. Can't you see ? I am playing this game. " Dhruv glanced sideways and caught glimpse of Bihan lying on the backseat and Thapki sitting beside him. Bihan looked thoroughly involved in the game he was playing and Thapki looked annoyed.
" I can see that. But its my phone and the ba-battery will die out. We are stranded on the road Bibihan we need a phone. "
" Oh come on Chuk chuk gadi. Dhruv has a phone and I have a phone. You just can't see me playing games. I will play games that too in your phone. You can't do anything about it. "
Dhruv had to smile at his words. His little brother was always fond of video games and he, he was all about books. He was suddenly struck by the memory of Bihan's 11 th birthday. He had gifted him a video game and his delight at receiving the game was etched to his memory. Dhruv had played the game with him all day and he remember Bihan saying hiw glad he was not because of the gift but because he had played with him. He had hugged his brother then and promised to spent tine with him always. But now, Dhruv's face darkened remembering the dynamics of their relationship.
Thapki's laughter brought him back to the present. He looked up and was amazed by the scene in front of him. Thapki was laughing joyously at Bihan. All the time he had known her he had never known her to laugh like that. She was an introvert by nature. His eyes travelled to his brother's face. He saw his brother's expressions switching from annoyance to amusement to joy in a matter of seconds. He joined her in her laughter. Something snapped inside Dhruv. He clenched his fists without taking his eyes off of them. Then he cclosed his eyes and slowly moved away from the car.
"Dh-dhruv sir...He had almost fallen asleep sitting on the log when Thapki called him.
" Yes Thapki..." Speaking to her was the last thing he needed at the moment.
" Ssir the mechanic is here. " Dhruv got up and followed her to the car.
" where is yout husband ? ":Dhruv regretted the question the moment it left his mouth. Thapki threw a long wary glance in his direction as she acknowledged the apparent taunt.
" Bihan fell asleep. " She answered quietly and continued to the car. The mechanic informed them that the car would be fixed in an hour or so. Dhruv decided it was best to go back to the log
"Ssir..." Thapki stood infront of him as he moved to occupy his seat
" yes Thapki..." He tried to keep oylut the frustration from his voice.
" I think we nneed to talk sir..." Thapki's voice held determination and Dhruv was taken aback.
"Thapki its late.I think you should rest.we can talk later. " Dhruv had a notion of what Thapki wanted to talk about but he wasnt ready for it. He wondered if he would ever be ready.
"No ssir...this needs to be done now. " Thapki's persistence angered him. Why can't she leave him alone ?
"Ok fine ! You wanna talk ? Fine. Let's talk. Tell me why are you still married to my brother? Why are you still in the house ?" Thapki had tested his patience to its breaking point and he burst. Sge stood silent for a moment and then began slowly.
"Sir I am still mmmarried to your brother because I wanted to give our marriage a chance." Dhruv was stunned. Of course he knew that they were giving a chance to their marriage but to hear her utter the same was hard. He hated the fact that her words affected him so much when it took only a mere three months for her to forget what they had and move on with his brother. Dhruv was at a loss for words. He couldnt help it when he burst he felt cheated.
"How could you Thapki ? How could you..with Bihan ? Did you forget that he was the one who betrayed usus ? That he was our culprit and the marriage was a betrayal?
"Dh-dhruv sir please.IYes he was our culprit. He was the one who destroyed our dreams. No one can understand the pain we went through. But I have also seen the goodness Bihan was capable of. During the three months I was in the house it was Bihan who stood by me in everything be it happiness or sadness. He saved my life innumerable times and never let me feel that I was alone in anything . I have forgiven bbihan. It took me a lot to forgive him. But I am not asking yyyou to forgive him ssir. I know that you love him. I aam only asking you to hold on to that love and try, try to forgive him. "
Dhruv chuckled. " You are speaking for your husband then ? Wonderful Thapki. I cannot believe that this is the girl I fell in love with. The one who stood up for what is right. What about us Thapki ? You and Me ? Was our love that fickle ?
" Ddhruvsir... thapki cut in sharply. What about us ? Sir there isnt us anymore. Yes I had dreamed of building my future with you. But that dream sshattered the moment the sindoor of your brother's name adorned my life. Sir opppen your eyes. I am your brother's wife and you aare Shradha's husband. We have different people in our lives now. It is impossible fir us to ever be together. If we wwwere destined to be we would have been together today. But our love died, our love doed not because it was fickle or because of a betrayal our love died because it was never meant to be. Thapki took a deep breath. It is time u realied the obvious sir. I'm sorry but I do not love you anymore and neither do you lovve me. It's time to move on."
Dhruv was stunned to silence. What was done cannot be undone. This was the truth laid out before him but he had refused to acknowledge it.
"But Shradha loves you sir. Even though she knows that you have'nt moved on she loves you. "
"But I dont love her thapki...I love - He stopped. He felt disgusted at hhimself for the way he was acting. Thapki looked at him pityingly.
"Sir, from what i have understood of love, it ddoes not happen to you one fine day. Love grows on you. Love is acceptance of what you are...of what he or she is ...of what you have in between. It is a pppromise of ttogetherness. At times you fall in love and at times, at times you learn to love." Thapki smiled gently at dhruv.
" Do you love him? " dhruv asked quietly.
Thapki was taken aback by the question. She wasnt lying when she said that they were giving their marriage a chance. It hadn't been many days since the decision. It was still to be spoken between the two of them. But love ? She remembered the fateful day at the mandir, he was still mad at her for her betrayal. She remembered the bomb scare and losing him in the crowd. She remembered her fear of losing him forever, the anguish and the joy at seeing him alive. She remembered his eyes which mirrored her own welled up with worry and their tears. She remembered the way they had cupped each other's face and hugged. And she remembered how they clung to each other throughout the day refusing to let go in the scare of losing each other. Does she love him ?
"Thapki - Dhruv began but he was cut off by the sound of the mechanic . The car was fixed. Thapki quietly moved to the car and got in beside Bihan. As dhruv paid off the mechanic he noticed Thapki. He followed her eyes to the sleeping form of Bihan. All the questions were answered and yes , it was time to move on
