'Dharampatni' not about Gandhiji: Harshad Chopra
IANS | Aug 3, 2011, 02.49PM IST
Popular TV actor Harshad Chopra, who plays the lead role in forthcoming show Dharampatni", admits that his character, Mohan Galla, has "slight inspiration" from the life of Gandhi, but says it is not based on his life.
"'Dharampatni' is not about Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi, it's not about Kasturba Gandhi. It's about Mohan Galla and Kastur. There is a slight inspiration in the fact that Mohan grows up to be a man who brings about social changes in his country, like Gandhi," Harshad told IANS over phone from Mumbai.
The initial buzz around the Imagine TV show, which will go on air Aug 16, was built by rumours of it being based on Gandhi and Kasturba's life.
"The problem is that when we say a show is loosely inspired from someone's life, people always forget the 'loosely'. They only remember that it is inspired from somewhere and draw parallels. That's what's happening with our show," he lamented.
Harshad, who became popular after featuring in shows like "Left Right Left" and "Kis Desh Mein Hai Mera Dil", says the show is a contemporary representation of Gandhiji's ideologies.
"The inspiration is Mahatma Gandhi. But he fought against British Raj. Whereas, in our show, we will give out a message for today's youth, we will deal with different issues...so it is a contemporary, subtle representation of what Gandhi said," said the actor.
Harshad's character Mohan is a a foreign educated man, who hardly cares about Indian culture until he is sensitised by situations in his own country upon his return. He also meets a girl, Kastur, (played by actress Aasiya Kazi), who is cheerful, optimistic, and grounded in her culture.
The story rings a bell! It takes you back to Shah Rukh Khan-starrer "Swades", but Harshad says the show has no hints from that movie.
"Honestly, when I heard the story, I felt it was like 'Swades'. But it is not! The characters are completely different," he said.
All said and done, the 28-year-old is unfazed by comparisons, and totally kicked about this "new challenge".
"There's a lot that has gone behind this show, and we are very positive about it. I hope it connects with people because it is different. For me, every new show that I take is like a new journey...I don't like to repeat my roles."
"I try to take distinct roles each time, and that's what keeps me going. I like the nervousness I experience on taking up challenging roles. If a character makes me think - 'What will happen on the sets? What will I do? How can I add to the character?' - that's what excites me!" he added.

Actor Harshad Chopra wants his supporters to send e-mails, messages, etc to request the channel to shoot a few sequences for his upcoming show 'Dharampatni' in Delhi

"I would be lying if I say I don't want to be back in Delhi," says actor Harshad Chopda who would soon be seen in Imagine TV'S show " Dharampatni".

The actor, who was in the city last year for the promotional campaign of one of his shows, feels Delhi is irresistible. "There is something that pulls you to the city," he laughs, adding, "I want people who appreciate my work to send e-mails, messages to Imagine TV so that a few sequences can be shot in Dilli."

Harshad was fortunate to catch up with a close friend during his last visit to the city. And if the channel's decision works in his favour, he would be keen on planning something exciting with his buddies. "It is great to plan a get-together with those who are close to you and even better to know what's keeping them busy. According to me, it is important to understand the importance of investing quality time in maintaining those relationships that are close to you."

Happy Friendship Day...

Sunday, August 07, 2011 | 1:15:07 PM IST (+05:30 GMT) Happy Friendship Day...

Friends of Tellydom stars speak about their favourite memories they have had...

In tellyworld, actors become friends either by doing common shows or after meeting in a public place. We have two such actors who had met on the sets of SAB TV's Left Right Left and are still great friends. Kunal Kapoor shares about his best friend Harshad Chopra, "Harshad and I had shared the same make-up room when we were doing the show. We were actually a bunch of people thrown at a training camp (laughs) and we became close during our trip to Raigarh. We used to watch movies during our free time either in his or my lap-top."

Kunal shares a little secret, "Harshad is such a big foodie that he used to eat our food as well. Once he had ordered around 1000 Rasmalais of which 500 were for the actors and 500 for the crew. He ate more than half of our part so coolly. He is that big a foodie and we can't expect him to offer us when he having it (laughs). We have to forget that we are his guest and should serve ourselves. I used to call him Bukkad because of this."

Friendship Day celebration this year

August 7, 2011 | Filed under: Kolkata | Posted by: Calcutta Tube Team

Kolkata, Aug 7 (Calcutta Tube / IBNS): As the first Sunday of August advances, the entire world gears up to mark the the day dedicated exclusively to the bondage of friendship. This year 'Friendship Day' celebration is on Aug 7.

Interestingly, the history of Friendship Day is quite amazing as the pages state that in 1935 the United States Congress had proclaimed the first Sunday of the month of Aug as the 'National Friendship Day'.

The occasion of 'National Friendship Day' has become quite popular as an annual event since that time.

Moreover, the day of celebrating the universal bondage of friendship slowly crossed the borders of America and became an equally important calendar event in the other corners of the world.

Today the day is celebrated by friends in their own ways just like they follow Valentine's Day or other such days of importance.

In 1997, the United Nations had named the popular cartoon character ,'Winnie ' the Pooh', as the world's ambassador of Friendship.

In India, the day is celebrated with high spirit by friends. They exchange cards, chocolates and most importantly, colourful friendship bands on this day to show their love and care for each other.

Television actor Jayshree Venkataraman who plays the character of 'Sarika' in Imagine TV serial 'Beendh Banooga Ghodi Chaduga' said: "Friendship is a very important part of my life. I still remember exchanging colorful friendship bands in school and celebrating friendship day with all my close friends."

"This year also I will tie friendship bands to my room mates and plan to spend the entire day having loads of fun with them. I also wish all my fans a very happy friendship day with a message to preserve and respect your friends irrespective of how big or successful you may be in life!!" she said.

Actor Harshad Chopra said: "Friendship day is just one special day out of all the days that you dedicate to your friends. I don't specially go out and meet my friends or catch up with them on friendship day, in fact sometimes we don't even connect for weeks and months together, but when we talk we are on the same pitch. The whole meaning of friendship is to celebrate the bond every single day and remember the person even if you are not in touch constantly for what he or she is. Friendship day to me is to thank your friend for being so special."

Sharing 'Friendship Day' plans, actor Aasiya Kazi who plays the character of 'Kastur' in the serial 'Dharampatni' said: "Friendship day is a very special day, I celebrate this day with all my friends, we usually go out for lunch, movies etc and enjoy the day in each others company. Even if I am shooting I make it a point to call my friends and thank them for everything they have done for me."

"I wish everybody a Happy Friendship day," she said, while wishing her fans.

Speaking on the debate that whether it is necessary to celebrate a separate say like Friendship Day, youths in Kolkata reacted to this debate in multiple ways.

"I believe that a day like friendship day is needed. I feel that people like me who cannot meet our friends for months can find an excuse to have huge get together and relive the old days," said Tanmoy Ghosh, a young IT professional.

"Friendship day is really special to me. No matter what happens I meet with my old friends on this day and we specially go to watch a film on this date. This togetherness matters to me the most," Shilpi Sen, who studies in a college in Kolkata, said.

But Saptarshi Mukherjee, who just completed his college, feels that there is no need for a special day like 'Friendship day'. He believes that for good friends celebrate and keep in touch for the entire year a separate day will not make it different.

"It is not necessary. I connect with my friends every day and in this age f social networking I can even connect with my old friends. So I think it is not necessary at all," he said.

"I do not feel it is a huge occasion. Tomorrow we will celebrate friend ship day and in the following days we will not connect with each other that is not going to help in maintaining the balance of the relationship. Friendship is lifetime. I do not follow these days like mothers day or father day. To me every day matters," one Tulika Das said.

From special Friendship Day coffee cups to trendy designed friendship bands, the market is already full of goodies meant for this occasion.

Colourful bands are available in Kolkata markets for Rs. 2 onwards.

Harshad Chopra exposits on 'Dharampatni'

Monday, August 08, 2011

Harshad Chopra began his acting career in Zee TV's 'Mamta' where he played a negative character, followed by 'Left Right Left' and the short-lived 'Amber Dhara'. However, his main lead role was in 'Kis Desh Mein Hai Meraa Dil' where he played Prem Juneja and 'Tere Liye'. Harshad will now be seen in 'Dharampatni', which airs from August 16, Monday to Thursday, 9:30 pm on Imagine TV. Sandeep Hattangadi spoke to him about his latest venture.

What is the graph of your character in the show?
I play Mohan, a foreign educated guy who has adopted a western lifestyle and looks down upon his own culture. He has wasted all his money in casinos and lives his life to the fullest, he doesn't complete his degree either. Mohan is also a drunkard and a womanizer, he is forced to return to India because of some financial mess created by him abroad.

Why is the show titled 'Dharampatni'?
The idea is based on the thought 'Behind every successful man there is a strong woman, her contribution might not be taken into account but her actions continue to shape the man'. The story enters the phase where Kastur and Mohan are married even after their dissimilarities and beliefs, and how Kastur motivates Mohan to make a positive change in his life and create a success story.

Is it a co-incidence that the characters are called Mohan and Kasturba?

Not really. We have adapted Mahatma Gandhi'd marriage with his wife Kasturba but we have contemporised it. 'Dharampatni' is my wife played by Asiya Kazi who is known from her show 'Bandini'. Her character is loosely based on Kasturba Gandhi.

There have been so many plays and films based on these iconic characters. Have you been influenced by them in any way?

No. Our writers have scripted entirely different character sketches and the tele play is entirely original as is the era in which the show is based.

How has your journey been as an actor?
I hail from a completely non-entertainment based family from Gondia in Vidharbha. I came to Mumbai just a few years ago before I could complete my college education and worked as a part of the unit of a show, where, luckily, I was spotted because of my looks and that show became my learning ground and after the popular show 'Mamta' on ZEE TV. My career took off and producers Deeya and Tony Singh from DJ's unit gave me a significant role in the popular army show 'Left Right Left' which brought me fame and now I have bagged the main protagonist show on Imagine's 'Dharampatni' which will be my sole show now.

What was it like working with Asiya Kazi?

She is a really sweet girl but we haven't shot much of the footage yet but we gel and understand each other well. I am looking forward to shooting with her in the episodes to follow.

Are you open to films?

Yes, I want to be the next 'Salman Khan' who's my idol.
Harshad Chopra is the
boy on the marquee to watch out for!

FEEL ALIVE WHEN I FACE THE CAMERA

Telly hottie Harshad Chopra on daily shows, fan -tastic demands and lots more

Shruti Jambhekar

Hes a charmer whose smile melts hearts. He won millions of hearts thanks to his soaps Left Right Left,Kis Des Mein Hai Mera Dil and Tere Liye.Thats Harshad Chopra for you.He was in Ahmedabad to promote his upcoming soap,Dharmapatni of Imagine TV.Dressed in a black tee and blue denims,Harshad struck picture-perfect poses for AT lens as he enjoyed the lovely rains.

ROLE PLAY

Dharmapatni is inspired by the love story of Mahatma Gandhi and Kasturba.I play the character of Mohan who is a commoner. He doesnt relate to many things happening in this world and vaguely understands rituals;socialising et al.

LIGHTS,CAMERA,ACTION!

I always wanted to become an actor.I think I really started living life when I took up acting.I feel alive when I face the camera. My first television soap Mamta is close to my heart because I got harsh feedbacks like Harshad cant act.All those critical comments made me learn and improvise.Post Left Right Left people said Harshad is a fine actor! I have always got into different characters since thats the challenge I put up for me.It is like stepping on a ladder.I cant go on repeating similar kind of roles, else there wont be any scope for moving forward in life.

FAN-TASTIC

I keep getting emails from fans asking me to team up with Additi Gupta (Kis Desh Mein Hai Mera Dil) and Anupriya Kapoor (Tere Liye),but I cant decide on who to work with and who not to.Casting is the producers call.Im comfortable with acting. The rest will automatically fall in place.I have cherished all my projects and my fans love me for my roles!

REALITY BITES

Im a little uncomfortable with a certain format of reality shows like Bigg Boss.I need to know the format inside out.If I find it crystal clear,I will take it up.Im not a good dancer but now I am taking up dance classes and improvising myself as a dancer.Soon I might surprise myself and the audience by participating in a dancebased reality show.Id definitely be a part of a show like Khatron Ke Khiladi.

RELATIONSHIP MATTERS

I share a lovely bond with my parents. When I was studying, like every teenager I used to think my parents dont understand my interests. But,now I understand their apprehensions and fears,as acting is all about taking a road less travelled. But now even my parents enjoy my acting. So far as love is concerned,I would say it is complicated! I will share details about my girl once Im confident about my love-interest in life.

@AHMEDABAD

This is my second visit to Ahmedabad.I really love to gorge on the Gujarati thaali, specifically the meethi daal.Last time when I was here,I did visit Iskon temple as it was Janmashtami time and I really liked being here. And this time,I really loved soaking in the rains here. The rains have really made Ahmedabad more beautiful.

'You will find Kastur in every second household' - Saurabh Tewari

Saturday, August 13, 2011 | 10:55:47 AM IST (+05:30 GMT) 'You will find Kastur in every second household' - Saurabh Tewari

TellyBuzz in conversation with Saurabh Tewari, Head of Programing – Fiction, Imagine TV, on the much awaited show Dharampatni...

Dharampatni, the compelling new drama on Imagine, talks about the story of every Indian woman whose unconditional love, strength and commitment towards her husband turns out to be the stepping stone for the man's success. Through this powerful narration, Imagine and DJ's Creative Unit will bring to you the tale of the devoted and selfless lady Kastur, played by Aasiya Kazi who is married to Mohan, Harshad Chopra.

In an exclusive conversation with TellyBuzz, Saurabh Tewari, Head of Programming, Fiction, Imagine TV, talks about the show and the expectations that the channel carries when it comes to this new fiction offering..

Tell us about Dharampatni. How much is this show inspired from the story of Gandhiji and Kasturba?
Frankly speaking, this show bears no connection with the story of Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi and Kasturba. If we talk of the similarities, there are three. One is that both have the Gujarati backdrop, and in both cases, the hero comes back to his homeland after studying abroad. And the striking similarity lies in the names, as our protagonists have the names of Mohan and Kastur. As far as the content goes, there is nothing common and the similarities end here. Our show will not show the freedom struggle and life of Indians during the British era.

So how would you describe the concept of Dharampatni?
Dharampatni is primarily a love story set up in a Mumbai based Gujarati backdrop. The story is extremely relatable and simple, and you will find a housewife like Kastur in every second household. Almost 99percent of housewives in India don't have a professional identity and are contented in investing their happiness for their family. While the wife makes all sacrifices for her husband and his family, she does not get to be part of the husband's success and achievements. She is happy and satisfied with the unconditional love she has for her husband, and does not expect anything in return.

The protagonist in the show Mohan Galla for a change is not the typical good boy and has certain shades of grey. Can you explain..
Yes, Mohan as a character has grey shades. He is fascinated with the western culture and is embarrassed over his own identity. He does not like being referred to as a Gujju. He dislikes the traditional set up that his family has. He has built up a fake identity for him, and has ego problems. All that matters to him are his stylish clothes and the different world that he lives in. He comes back home to get a shock of his life as his parents want him to marry the girl he had got engaged to two years back.

Tell us about the casting of Harshad Chopra.
We had tried many actors and realized that we needed a seasoned actor to carry forward this different character. Harshad Chopra has the right mix of aura, screen presence and innocence that is needed to play Mohan Galla.

Harshad has this goody boy image as he has done only such roles in the past. Do you think his fans will accept him in this different image?
See, people do not have any fixed image for an actor, and lot depends on how the actor delivers in the said role. Let's not forget that Shahrukh Khan in his prime days got popular for his grey shaded roles. We are confident that Harshad with his brilliant acting skills will put in a lot of conviction to the role.

'Behind every successful man, there is a woman' - how much does this saying hold good for the female protagonist, Kastur?
Kastur hails from a middle class family and is a typical Indian girl. She aspires to marry the man she got engaged to few years back. Kastur represents any normal Indian housewife. She is not the street smart and over charming girl you get to see in shows. There is nothing extraordinary in her; she is not educated and is not presentable too. Her simplicity is what makes Kastur special. But when it comes to reforming Mohan, she knows all about it and does her best.

Aasiya has been the face of Imagine from Bandini days.
Yes, we decided to recast her as she fits the character of Kastur very well. And the character of Santo was very different from what Kastur is going to be.

We have heard the channel and production house got into lot of detailing to get the story line right.
Yes, we did study the mindset of people who have got back from abroad. We had to research a lot on this to get the characters right.

How is the association with DJ's Creative Unit been?
DJ's have always been in the thick of things when it comes to Imagine. They produced Radhaa Ki Betiyaan Kuch Kar Dikhayenge when Imagine launched.

What are the expectations of the channel when it comes to Dharampatni?
Expectations are very high, and we are confident of this concept doing well. Looteri Dulhan did not work, but this should. The slot of 9.30 pm is highly competitive and we are looking forward to the challenge.
