10 THINGS only a Taarak Mehta Ka Ooltah Chashmah FAN will understand

28 Feb 2015 03:43 PM | TellychakkarTeam

It's not always that a show on the small screen becomes such a phenomenon that everybody swears by it. From engaging audiences for over a decade to still containing to be the number one show on TV, Taarak Mehta Ka Ooltah Chashmah on SAB TV (Neela Telefilms), has become the cult comedy of the small screen. But are you a true fan? Here are ten ways to know if you're the ultimate fan...read on:

Garba:

If you don't randomly break into 'garba-raas', you haven't been a big fan of the series. Because no self-respecting Taarak fan will shy away from doing the Garba like the lead protagonist Daya Gada.

Aye halo:

This joyful greeting will make you forget your worries and indulge in a fun banter with your friends and family.

Community Festivals:

It's one of the only soaps that showcases community festivals where people from every cast and religion come together to celebrate functions. Only a true blue Taarak fan will relate to elaborate community festivals!

Tappu Sena:

The bratty gang that not only causes numerous tensions in the society, but also helps unite the different mindsets of the people. Since the gang is always indulging in some crazy thing after the other, there's never a dull moment in the society.

Middle Class Values:

We are tired of the elaborate sets and ornamental designs of other soaps, that's why the middle class values of the show are such a hit with us. Even the most die-hard fan of bling would sober down if he is a Taarak addict.

Scooter:

You love scooters more than cars. You dream of buying a fancy yellow scooter just like Mr Bhide. Come on, haven't you secretly fantasised about owning one? *winks*

Achaar-Papad:

It's part of your daily lingo because you're a fan of Madhavi Bhide's achaar-papad business. Doesn't it make the bubbly Maharashtrian lady an able businesswoman?

Cross-Cultural References:

You enjoy the cross-cultural debates because you've grown up on a healthy dose of Taarak episodes. From stereotyping Tamilians to Punjabis to showcasing the cultural dynamics from every corner of the country, there's a lot one can learn from Taarak...

Babuchak:

You of course know what this means and have used it a number of times on your friends! Because who can forget Babuji's golden words...

Aye Ma, Mataji!

The only way to dramatise your conversations is by exclaiming 'aye ma, mataji!' It not only makes you the centre of attraction, but also brings humour into your banters.

Are you a fan of this show? Do let us know your thoughts on this in the comment box below...

The article is very well written.

Somehow I feel the writer has written the article about old tmkoc rather than the present one.
Middle class values have almost disappeared from the show. The gokuldham wasis always need an excuse to have parties and functions, spend lot of money in making lavish sets and wearing designer clothes, etc.

A person who regularly watches the show will know that it glorifies Gujarati culture a lot.In this show, everything Gujarati is the best, whether it's clothes or food or language or cities. Only big festivals are celebrated but with Gujarati tadka. Every festival celebration ends with garba.

This show does stereotype tamilians and punjabis and bengalis too. They have very limited knowledge about other cultures and languages.

Even a die hard fan of the show is fed up of daya's garba.Nobody will do garba at the drop of a hat like garba.

But still this show is much much better than other channels shows and I am glad it's on top.Such shows are really rare nowadays.

Remember? They have a feeling that this show is watched only in Gujarat?
So basically, this show is made for gujarati people from gujrat, who have presumably never been out of Gujarat. The only other place they know is Mumbai. Now, how to make these people feel great about them selves? By placing a gujarati family with other families in a Mumbai set upand showing them to be the best amongst the lot. Simple!

Just observe, how lowly they portray a scientist. And the best is, how lowly they portray a well educated Marathi person in front of a school drop out, over smart, Gujarati businessman, who only knows how to earn money. Think from the angle of an average joe from Gujarat. he must be delighted to see and believe that Gujjus are the best even outside Gujarat. Esp compared to Marathis...Mumbai, being the bone of contention.😛.

This portrayal is called 'Ignorance" and "False self praise". Anybody who stays in Mumbai will know that Gujjus really don't matter in all the fields. Yes, the only place they dominate are in shops. But there are equal number of Rajasthani sshopkeepers

Anyway, not that I have anything against them, because I have a truck load of Gujju friends. But the over the top glorification of everything Gujarathi esp in Mumbai, is actually hallucination on part of the creatives. Only a wish, nothing more. Apart from Navratri, where do you see Dandiya? How many people prefer Gujarathi thali to a Punjabi thali or Chinese or South Indian food in reality? In actuality, Maharshtrian Vada Pav is the life line of Mumai.😉 If you have an academic problem, how many of us will go our Gujju friend for help? Wouldnt we rather go to a our brilliant South Indian friend or a scholar Maharashtrian friend? In school projects, how many times a Gujju student has been our leader? etc etc...

So, basically this serial is made by a Gujju, to make other Gujjus feel good about themselves. We are actually not supposed to watch it.😛

First of all, the mindset amongst most of the indians that gujjus's are not fine academists is wrong, sab gujju baniye nahi hote and sab south indian padhakoo nahin hote, there are very prime examples of excellent south indian and maharastrain businesman and equally there prime examples of gujju scholars, so such thinking is absolutely not expected in 21st century for the least !!

@Amish,this serial stereotypes every community including gujaratis. In one episode, daya was mentioning all the successful businessmen who are less eduated yet earned a lot of money and fame. And all the names she mentioned all the guarati people. It was like as if all the gujjus are less educated and successful businessmen.
Similarly this show stereotypes tamilians, punjabis and bengalis.Yesterday iyer gave this dumb idea of selling the scooter and only sodhi agreed with him.Punjabis, specially sardarjis and tamilians are not dumb.I am fed up of these sardarji jokes which always try to prove how dumb they are.

Thank you. My point exactly. I have said earlier I have a truckload of Gujju friends. I have nothing against Gujjus per se. But just look at the way this serial is portraying everything in a lopsided way. The serial itself has stereotyped every community. I was simply talking in their own language. If everyone has to be stereotyped, then this is the way, ignorants will stereotype gujjus. Is it acceptable? Similarly, we non-gujjus, do not like the way rest of us are pathetically portrayed. Also, giving so much importance to everything gujju, is done by the creatives. We obviously have the right to laugh at this.
My entire post was oriented towards a certain Mr. Modi and the creatives. It was not supposed to be taken personally.
