Chapter 3: The Sorting Ceremony
The first years climb out of the boat and are asked to follow . They are walking when all of a sudden they are asked to stop. They are informed by Professor McGonagall, an old witch, that before joining the great dinner they have to be sorted into their houses. SwaSanLak listen curiously. After Professor McGonagall goes in leaving them outside, all the students start discussing among themselves.
Swara- I am damn sure that Sans is going to be sorted in Slytherin, it's the perfect house for him.
Sanskar hears that.
Sanskar- and where are you going to be sorted? Hufflepuff?
Swara(upset tone)- any house is better than Slytherin.
Sanskar- I will be happy being a Slytherin. Even my dad was there.
Laksh- stop it guys, the professor is coming.
All the students get quite. Professor McGonagall returns and takes them in.
Inside, the students are mesmerized by the decorated hall. It looks dreamy.
Laksh- it's amazing!
Swara- Brilliant!
The students are asked to line up. A stool is kept nearby where the Sorting Hat i placed. Professor McGonagall takes out a list and starts reading out.
Swara- Lucky, relax, I m sure that you will be in Gryffindor.
Lucky- ya! It's my type you know.
Sanskar hears this and looks at them irritatedly.
2 girls are sorted into Hufflepuff, 3 boys in Ravenclaw, Aidan is sorted in Slytherin and a girl named Hannah in Hufflepuff.
Professor McGonagall- Swara Bose!
Swara gets nervous and slowly goes and sits in the stool, the Sorting Hat is placed above her. Sanskar and Laksh watch curiously.
Sorting Hat- hmm... intelligent yet naughty, brave yet scared..where should I put you...hmm...hmm...OK... GRYFFINDOR!
Swara jumps in happiness and runs towards the Gryffindor table. They all congratulate her. Laksh signs her well done. Sanskar too does the same but she ignores him and only responds to Laksh. He is hurt.
Then again, 4 boys and 2 girls are sorted in Slytherin including a girl named Silvia who looked like the smartest one in that house.
Professor McGonagall- Laksh Oberoi!
As soon as Laksh hears his name his heart beats fast and he runs towards the Sorting Hat. Swara is sure that he would be sorted in Gryffindor, so she keeps a place for him near her.
Sorting Hat- are you sure that we are meeting for the first time? I think I have read this mind before, you are so easy to be sorted...hmm... SLYTHERIN!
SwaSanLak get shocked and moreover Laksh can't even move from his sit. Professor McGonagall gives him a slight push and he climbs down the stool. He looks at Swara who is looking at him shocked and then at Sanskar who is looking surprised. He gives a dejected look and goes to the Slytherin table.
5 boys and 3 girls are sorted in Gryffindor and Hufflepuff respectively. A boy is sent to Ravenclaw and another one to Slytherin.
Professor McGonagall- Sanskar Oberoi.
Sanskar instantly looks at Professor McGonagall and then at Swara who once again ignores him.
Swara (in mind)- if Lucky is sorted in Slytherin then there should no sorting ceremony for Sans, he is bound to be in Slytherin.
Sanskar goes and sits, the Sorting Hat is placed over him.
Sorting Hat- hmm...another difficult mind! Well, there is bravery, belief in oneself, hardworking, and a bit of cleverness. Hmm...well you will be in, GRYFFINDOR!
SwaLak get shocked and look at each other whereas Sanskar is still bewildered by the exchange of houses for him and Laksh. He goes and sits near Swara.
Swara- there is a mistake, you can't be in Gryffindor, it should have been Lucky, you should have been in Slytherin.
Sanskar ignores her.
After the sorting is over, Dumbledore starts his speech. SwaSanLak instantly pay attention.
Dumbledore- Welcome first years to a new year at a new school, here you will not only learn magic but in each and every phase you will be put to tests, your loyalty, your bravery, your chivalry, every thing will be tested. Before, the start of this term, I would like to say you all that put your best in learning the most amazing thing in this world-magic! All the best my students, let the feast begin..
He claps his hands and all the tables in the hall instantly get filled with delicious food. Laksh being a foodie is the first to start eating while SwaSan look at each other tensed. After sometime, they too begin eating.
After the dinner, the first years are showed their dorms and asked to sleep. SwaSanLak go in their respective beds and try to sleep although the events of the night still floating on their mind.
In Sanskar's dorm, Sanskar is trying to sleep but is unable to as he feels too cold. He decides to go to the Gryffindor common room for sometime. As he enters the room, he sees Swara sitting besides the fireplace, wrapped in a shawl and immersed in deep thoughts. He goes and sits besides her in another chair.
Both look at each other but doesn't say anything. Then all of a sudden, Swara feels restless.
Swara- Sans, what are you doing here?
Sanskar- I wasn't able to sleep. It's too cold.
Swara- it's strange, in the month of September, it's too cold.
Sanskar nods.
Sanskar- why are you tensed?
Swara- why do you asks?
Sanskar- look I know that something is troubling you, you know that I can read your eyes. So tell me, what's wrong?
Swara- it's strange that even after being enemies we can read each other's emotions so clearly. Why are you tensed?
Sanskar gets surprised hearing that.
Sanskar- how do you know?
Swara- you know, I can read your eyes too.
SwaSan stare at each other for sometime, then look at the fireplace.
Sanskar- it's the same thing troubling both of us that how did Lucky get sorted in Slytherin and I in Gryffindor.
Swara nods.
Sanskar- do you think that I am not capable of being in Gryffindor?
Swara doesn't say anything.
Sanskar- Sur, look into my eyes.
Swara looks at his eyes.
Sanskar- do you think so?
Swara- no.
Sanskar smiles a little and then both of them stare at the fireplace once again.
After sometime,
Sanskar- OK! Sur, I am going to sleep. Good Night.
He looks a Swara and sees that she is already asleep. He goes to her.
Sanskar- Sur! Sur!
She doesn't wake up.
Sanskar somehow manages to pull Swara along with him and drags her to the girl's dormitory. He manages to make Swara walk a little by holding her from her waist. He goes to the dormitory and pulls out his wand.
Sanskar- Alahomora!
The door opens and he slowly drags Swara in without making a single sound and makes her lie down on an empty bed, which he assumes to be hers. He then goes out of the room after closing the door. He thinks about Swara's tensed face and then retires to bed for the night.
The next morning all the first years are getting ready for their first classes.
SwaSanLak enter the Transfiguration class which is held by Professor McGonagall and both Slytherin and Gryffindor have the class together so SwaLak get a chance to meet each other.
Swara- Lucky!
Laksh turns back and instantly a smile appears on his face. Swara runs and hugs him.
Swara- I missed you!
Laksh- me too!
Swara- let's go to the class together!
Laksh- OK!
They both head towards the class whereas Sanskar walks along with some other first years.
They enter the class and take their respective seats. As it is the first day, so Professor McGonagall doesn't teach them anything but instead has a light talk with them telling them about the rules of Transfiguration. The class gets over soon so does the other classes, as all the teachers do the same.
SwaSanLak are now on their way to their dormitories.
Swara- Good Night Lucky!
Laksh- Good Night Sur!
All of a sudden, Aidan and another boy come to them.
Aidan- hey Mr. Unlucky!
Swara and Sanskar are bewildered and look at Laksh. Laksh looks at the ground. Aidan comes pushes Laksh making him stumble and he looks on with a smirk. Swara gets angry.
Swara- Hey what nonsense was that?
Aidan stops and turns to face Swara.
Aidan- Hey Mr. Unlucky, you didn't told me that you have got a girlfriend.
At this, Sanskar comes forward.
Sanskar- shut up Aidan.
Aidan- oh come on Sanskar! Why are you backing this two. You don't need to. You should be my friend, not theirs.
Sanskar- I am not their friend, but what you did wasn't good.
Aidan- then what should I do? Do you know yesterday night this fool was shouting in his sleep that he should be in Gryffindor! Look, I still don't know why he was sorted into Slytherin? He should have been in Hufflepuff!
Sanskar- and what makes you say that?
Aidan- perhaps you don't know but the Slytherin house is only a place for the cunning and evil minds.
Swara- so do you mean to say that you are evil?
Aidan(smirking)- There is nothing as dark or evil, it is just the absence of light and goodness.
Sanskar and Laksh look at each other and then at Swara.
Aidan- well I don't want to interfere in your life. Goodnight!
He goes near Swara and says " Goodnight Sweetheart!".
Swara pushes him and enters the common room. SanLak giggle and then Laksh retires in his room. Sanskar is about to go to his room when he looks at the window and is shocked.
Specks of snow were falling outside. And the strange thing was that, it was the month of September.
Precap-
Sanskar- this is impossible, how can it be so cold in the month of September?
Laksh- there is something strange in this place!
...
Laksh sees the silhouette of someone in the dungeons.
...
Swara and Sanskar are in a dark cave.
Swara- What kind of place is this?
Sanskar(looking at something)- a really dangerous one!
Swara looks at where Sanskar is watching and both are shocked!
