CHAPTER 4
"I'll see you at lunch" Swara reminded her sister before they parted and headed for their respective classes. Ragini and her college friend Anjali were attending the first class of their new course today. The girls seated next to each other and shortly thereafter the professor entered the classroom and started the class. "I'll be dividing you into groups of four" the professor explained after giving a short introduction of the course "You'll be solving tasks and doing assignments together as a group during this course. Is that understood?" he continued. Some of the students nodded and some replied "Yes". "Good" the professor said and started dividing the students into groups. Anjali sighed in annoyance and complained to Ragini in a low voice "I just don't understand why we can't choose who to work with ourselves" Ragini shrugged her shoulders in response when she suddenly heard the professor say "Group number two will have Ragini Gadodia, Roshni Malhotra, Yuvraj Kapoor and Lakshya Maheshwari working together". The professor continued onto calling the names of the students in group three. Ragini felt a weird sensation in her body when the last name in her group was called out, but almost instantly shook it off. The students started to look for their group members and some even switched seats and sat next to each other. "Group number two?" Ragini heard a girls voice from the other side of the classroom, she turned and saw a girl slightly waving one hand in the air trying to signal her group members. Ragini packed her notebook into her bag and started to make her way to her fellow group member when she saw that two guys joined her. It must be the other group members, she thought to herself. As she approached them the girl made eye contact with Ragini and asked "You're in group number two as well?" Ragini smiled "Yea-" she suddenly stopped midword and stopped in her tracks. One of the group members had turned around to greet her and it was none other than Laksh. The same Laksh who had protected her that night and drove her home. The same Laksh who had offended her at several occasions at Neha's party and acted like an arrogant, smug brat but who had also helped her. Again. Laksh's lips curled into an amused smile when he turned to see Ragini as his fourth group member. A few seconds passed as Ragini looked at him wide-eyed, the other two group members stood there confused. Ragini didn't utter a single word but turned around and went up to the professor. "Mr. Gupta" Ragini said nervously "Can I please change my group?" she asked cautiously. "Why?" the professor asked curtly. Ragini didn't know what to say. There was no way to explain why she wanted to change her group. What was she supposed to tell the professor? That Laksh was a conceited brat who made her feel unsettled and, as of last night, seemed to have a habit of peeving her off? Ragini stood there wide-eyed and mum. The professor looked at her waiting for a response and spoke when he didn't seem to be getting one "If I were to change your group then there will be other students who will want to change their group as well. Sort things out with your group, please" the professor said firmly and then continued looking through his files. Ragini looked back at her group who seemed to be engrossed in a conversation. It seemed like they were sharing contact information judging by how all three were busy talking and typing things on their phones. She slowly made her way back to her group. "Are you or are you not in our group?" the girl asked her confused and somewhat irritated when she noticed Ragini coming towards them. "I am" Ragini replied softly with a hint of hesitance whilst avoiding any kind of eye contact with Laksh. The girl gave Ragini her number and asked her to text her so she could save Ragini's number too. Ragini left almost instantly after the girl gave Ragini her number, leaving her group members, excluding Laksh, confused by her behaviour.

During lunch, Laksh and a few of his friends were hanging out by the vending machines. Laksh was leaning against one of the vending machines with his arms across his chest as a few girls passed by him while giggling and looking at him. "Is there a girl out there who doesn't have a crush on you?" one of his friends complained as he popped open a soda can. Laksh smirked smugly in response, and only moments later he saw Ragini walk by a little further down the hall. Ragini's eyes were accidentally locked into his, this almost instantly made her furrow her brows and look away. Sid who was one of Laksh's closest friends noticed the brief exchange between Laksh and Ragini and said "I think we found one". Surbhi, who was Sid's girlfriend, slightly frowned as if she was trying to remember something "Wait, isn't that the girl from class this morning? The one who's in your group?". "Yeah" Laksh replied while trying to seem apathetic. "Tell you what, if you manage to get that girl to like you before the course ends then drinks are on me for an entire month" Sid challenged Laksh. "I don't know man, Laksh knows how to make them go weak in the knees" the friend with the soda can warned Sid. "After seeing the way that girl just looked at Laksh, I am willing to take on this bet" Sid said confidently and smiled, sure of his future victory. "You should save your money, you're gonna need it for your liver transplant" Laksh gibed. "You're saying I'll lose?" Sid replied. "I'm saying, if I were to take this bet, you'd definitely lose" Laksh said smugly. Before Sid had the chance to say something back Laksh's phone rang. It was his mother. She asked him when he finished college today and told him to come home straight after his last class, stating that it was important.

Laksh arrived at the mansion and saw that the majority of his family were gathered in the living room as he came down the stairs. As he walked towards them he saw that there was a man and a woman, and what seemed to be a young girl his age seated there as well. "Laksh, beta, take a seat" his mother said as soon as she saw that her son had arrived. Laksh was hesitant and somewhat confused about what was going on but did what his mother told him and sat down. "Laksh, Aditi here is doing her last semester at college, just like you" Annapurna said trying to get Laksh's attention. Laksh nodded nonchalantly without even looking at Aditi and then took an apple from the bowl of fruit that was on the table. "We would like Aditi to finish this semester before the wedding takes place. That way, both Laksh and Aditi will have finished college and they can focus on their married life" Aditi's mother suggested whilst Aditi looked shyly down at the floor. Laksh was just about to take a second bite from his apple when he heard what Aditi's mother said. "What!?" Laksh spat out. He felt the rage building up within him. "What the hell is going on here?" Laksh's voice rose. "Laksh" Durgaprasad said warningly, but Laksh was too angry to care. He shot up from his seat "Laksh, please" his mother pleaded. "Let me make this clear to all of you. I am not getting married. Ever. If you ever pull anything like this again I will leave this house!" Laksh warned angrily. "Laksh!" Durgaprasad rasied his voice as he warned Laksh again. Laksh turned and left the mansion. His mother was in tears, his father angry, and Aditi and her family were baffled and offended...
