Oh had another thought. What if the picture is of Karan? What if in the process of all that she became obsessed with him because she feels like he's an alternate form of her dead child. So now she is obsessed with controlling him and making sure no one can take her place in his life. She seems a lot more close to Karan than to Kunal. As obsessive as she is if Kunal were her son she's be controlling him a lot more. There was a scene where she told Nirmala to deal with Kunal and that she will take care of Karan.

No, she is suppressing Karan so that Kunal can move ahead in life. The way she has made Karan, he is no competition for Kunal in the matters of the business.
