I think getting rid of Suhani is the primary concern for her. She herself said once that she likes Soumya because she does what she's told unlike Suhani. And again in some other episode she said that she'll cause as much pain to Suhani as Yuvraj felt before throwing her out of the house. So I guess this definitely is one of the reason. And then she always gives preference to looks over inner beauty. Complexion matters to her a lot. She doesn't want ideal bahus but show pieces for her house, Soumya can satisfy her on that front.

@bold: That's kind of what has had me thinking more about it Sandia. I don't think she really cares whether Souyma becomes the DIL of Birla House. I think it's more about getting rid of Suhani and it's just a bonus that she appreciates Souyma's looks and skin colour, sense of dress etc and also the best thing about Souyma I think in Dadi's eyes is that she "appears" to be moldable, doing all of Dadi's bidding like a puppet on a string. Yet, little does Dadi know, that this evil puppet has a mind of her own!

I'm going to structure my reply in order of how much I think these factors matter-

1. Birlas' status - I think the most important things in Dadi's life are status, wealth and social reputation. Nothing comes above these factors for Dadi. I think her first and foremost disappointment with Suhani is that she is dark, hence not beautiful (not my view but Dadi's opinion) and doesn't add to the Birlas' status. Dadi's life revolves around status and anything that doesn't add to it is useless and inferior, in her opinion. Her every action is controlled by how it is perceived by society. This is already a strike against Suhani.

2. YuvAni's forced marriage- Next, Dadi can't stand the fact that Yuvraj married Suhani under the threat of that bank loan, therefore she thinks, for obvious reasons, that Yuvraj doesn't love Suhani and is just living with her because a sense of obligation. This is especially intolerable to her, because, using her words, that girl and her phateechar father blackmailed and plotted their way into Birla House. Her darling grandson was an innocent victim who fell prey to the scheming of 'dark and ugly'😕 Suhani. If you notice the episodes before she finds out about Yuvraj loving Soumya and the bank loan, she tolerated Suhani, even if she couldn't bring herself to accept Suhani fully. I think her Mission Send Suhani Out and outright hatred for her began once she discovered the blackmail and Soumya part, because then she got a reason to justify her ousting of Suhani.

3. Soumya, the 'suitable' wife- Since the only traits Dadi cares about when it comes to her DILs are beauty and status, I feel they are more or less replaceable for her. She thinks Yuvraj loves Soumya, but more importantly, she fits her idea of what a Birla Bahu should be like. Do you really think Dadi would have accepted Soumya had she not been beautiful? Yuvraj loving her is just a bonus that fits into Dadi's worldview of what the Birlas should be like. Wait till Yuvi tells her he loves Suhani, all her concern for Yuvraj's "love" will go flying out of the window. Once that happens, she'll probably go back to tolerating Suhani while still resenting and making life difficult for her in general. So, I don't think Dadi cares about Soumya herself too much; if a new, more beautiful, richer girl came along, Dadi would want her for Yuvi instead. Dadi's love for a person only depends on what status-boosters they can bring to the table.

I also think Charity, that Dadi's care for Souyma is superficial at best and when she finds out that Yuvi doesn't love her it will take her no time at all to forget about her. In fact as you mentioned, if it had been any fair girl that cared about looks and appearances she would have been acceptable in Dadi's eyes. Even Suhani would have been accepted to some extent had she used the "fairness" cream right from the beginning and took care of herself the way Dadi wanted her too but because she has a mind of her own, Dadi disliked her even more. She has never called Suhani anything but hey "ladki" since the beginning, even before she found out about the blackmailing and has been barely been able to tolerate her. I'm sure she even inside has acknowledged Suhani's good traits but has turned a blind eye to them as her hatred for her and her father is much greater. When Yuvraj finally tells Dadi he loves Suhani, I wonder if Dadi will tolerate her enough to change her name from ladki to Suhani because she hasn't done so thus far (even when she didn't know about the blackmail and Yuvraj had assured her he made the choice to marry her). Will knowing that Yuvi loves her change her at all? In the beginning she used to get mad at Yuvi that he took Suhani's side against his own grandmother. What will happen when Yuvraj actually acknowledges his love and defends Suhani then? Will that make Dadi hate her more or will she finally accept her?
