I think that the Mods of a particular section should be elected through a proper system of Voting. Imposing Unilaterally elected Moderators on the members of a Forum does not prove to be accomodative for all the people. This is a more tiring & longer process, but a more efficient one, IMHO.

Actually I do kind of agree with you. I have noticed some of the mods on forums favor the people they know, like there friends more, and not care about other people that come on that forum and not listen to there ideas

So the election process can eliminate that to some extent

We used to have that earlier.

However, there are so many forums, and so many members, that there is every possibility that it will be unfair. If you really do have voting, members with the most friends will win, who may or may not be mature enough to moderate a forum. Moderators are not supposed to be the most popular people, they are supposed to be able to control the forum.

I think you are highly mistaken on how the promotions take place. It isn't based on just the moderator who you apply to, or who you're friends with. Your posts are monitored, warning levels, IP checks, background checks, it goes through moderators, Channel moderators and Global Moderators before being approved. So no one who doesn't deserve it gets promoted.

And Izzy I highly doubt moderators favour their friends alone. Perhaps you haven't seen the whole story?

Try to put yourself in their shoes and see if you understand their situation too. Anyway, the point here was about voting, let's stick to that.

Maybe you are right, now when I also think about it I think you are right that we there were voting for mods there are so many members on IF that it would be hard.

Sam - I'm not saying that members should be allowed to vote randomly, The senior Moderators can select a few deserving members & put up a panel of candidates, and then the members should vote.
It's not fair the other way round either. If a person is leader for so many members, then I think the members should have a say in who they want their leader to be.

Moderators are not leaders. Moderators are people who take care of the forum.

You seem to be thinking of moderators as publicly voted presidents of some sort. Please clear your misconceptions and try to understand what I'm saying =)

Sam - I don't have any misconceptions about Moderators. Moderators may not be leaders, but they fall under the same category. Neither am I saying that they are publicly elected presidents. The point I am trying to drive home is that members should have a say in who they want their Mod to be, afterall, it is they, who are to be governed.
It becomes Dictatorship the other way round. How can you be sure that the unilaterally elected Mod will be fair ?
Try to step into the shoes of a normal member, then maybe you will understand what I am trying to say =)

I don't think that will work because then the most popular member will win. Either way, I do think that the 'public' should have a say in who gets to be a moderator, because I have seen a lot of favorism and discrimination on the forums (after I have tried putting my self in their shoes).
