Yup yup!! Me here!!
You know what guys, I'm not feeling like celebrating Independence Day. I mean, see we are free from British rule, but now we are slaves to greed and corruption (we were before too, that's why Britain could colonise us). This is my final year of under-graduation, and all our routine - exams, elections, youth fest, etc - has been disrupted due to Commonwealth Games. What games? The ones that have shamed our country the world over?
I'm in Punjab, and so have seen the Punjab-Haryana floods, their impact and the blame game of the politicians up close.
Just feeling so depressed about it all.
Today people who can always be seen drinking, partying, cheating in exams, scheming against others, stealing taxes, etc are going on talking about patriotism. Is singing 'aisa desh hai mera' patriotism? Or is posting videos of soldiers in Leh on fb patriotism?
I might be sounding like such a freak, coming after so many months and then only complaining, but I just want you all to think about it.
Anyway, how are you all doing?

Hey Amna!

No, you don't sound like a freak, today is 15th August so we are supposed to think about these things.

I agree with many of the things you said, but somehow I feel that you are looking at only one side of the coin. All right, the commonwealth games are pretty much in a khichidi. but instead of shrugging and throwing the blame left right and centre, we need to zip our mouths and work hard. After the Games are done with, the papers will undoubtedly raise the questions once more.
As far as colonisation is concerned, I partly agree with you on that point. Being divided in small princely states did not help, nor did the constant fear of each other. Independence day, in my opinion gave us trust and the will to trust each other. We are a sovereign state today, thanks to the independence and constitution.
There is no country that does not have corruption, crime. Add to that a cultural diversity, so that every step one takes can offend someone or the other. It's a wonder we have stayed together as the largest democracy. Consider the sheer amount of people living on the same land, with large religious and cultural diversity, factor in the depleted resources due to hundred years of colonisation and we get the 'Independent India 1947'. At the risk of sounding very cliche, I say, the only thing we had is 'hope' and 'determination'.
Independence day is not only about singing 'Ae mere watan ke logon' or watching the Independence day parade on Doordarshan. It's about the things that define us. If we don't like the way a particular agency(public) is functioning, we have the right to say so. We have the right to information, to move around, to practice any religion.
The best feeling I get is when I read the preamble to the constitution (read it in Hindi for the full effect):
ENACT AND GIVE TO OURSELVES THIS CONSTITUTION.

When I used to open my political science textbook, I used to read the preamble (in hindi). Somehow used to make the study more meaningful. :)

Why do we crib about the state of our politics or administration? Unless we do not enter politics or administration, we have no right to complain, do we? Do we go to every election, vote every time, and if we feel that no candidate is suitable, do we submit a form saying that? Most people prop up their feet in front of the television and use the paid leave 'appropriately'.

We should enter the administration if we want to complain. Join NGOs, something, anything!

Sorry for that essay. Couldn't resist😃 So how did everyone spend their day?

Hello everybody...
Agreed on everything what Pooja and Ammu said....
India is a large democracy to manage.... Unless every individual takes action no revolution for that matter even a change cannot be made possible!
When a law imposes rules it is for our benefit, as individual first we should abide by them... How many of us stop at signals even in the night, or when police men are not around... We jump signals, go in wrong routes....
How many of us know that we shouldn't throw garbage on roads? Everyone.... That too educated citizens too.... But how many of us abide by it?!?
Questions are many, but answer is only one.... As Gandhi said "Be the change you want to see"!
Not to boast, but I am doing tat right now... When young and in a age when I knew not much I used to throw garbage, accepted.... But now never ever I throw garbage.... I take a paper bag like thing whereever I go and put it in tat, if I don't see any garbage bin near by... And signals I do stop.... That too before the stop line, even when people behind me honk, I try to patient and stay put....
But about the corruption, I was so disheartened.... Seriously those games are on where people all around the world would be watching... It is a status symbol for us... How can you target hosting Olympics when these games have been made a mess... As said, my mind always said forget the corruption for now.... Get things going, let the games end, then we can sue or saw any or everybody in charge...
Finally that has what happened recently, with the PM's interference... Hope everything goes fine and praying there are no greivences during the games!!!!!!!!!!!
As for politics, when something rides high it means it is going to end soon.... As for now dirty politics is riding high and people have started to awaken.... We have started, we shall reach our goal!!!!!!!!!!
JAAGO RE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I agree with you Di. Corruption is, unfortunately like a black infestation gnawing away inside our government and other firms. We, the people need to take a stand and prevent people related to us to stop doing this. And slowly, but surely, it will stop. I am hopeful :)
