It is a sin not to do your duty-Hanuman

In a society where rights are given more importance than duties, this line beautifully depicts the essence of Ramayana.
Do your duty. Yes Krishna tells it explicitly in MB, but the way it is done we have to understand Ramayana itself.
Personal pain, grief is at one side. But your duty is on the other side. No personal emotion can come in the way of performing your duty.
So how will I understand my duty. It is actually quite easy. If you are a student , your primary duty is to study. Not to think about exams, whether you will pass or fail. But are you studying
If you are a child your duty is to respect elders. I clearly say respect, not obey. Because if you obey you might end up obeying their wrong things also. But respect gives you a way to put your POV to an elder if he or she is going wrong.
Similarly with respect to each role we have to understand the duties associated with it. If we understand the duties , do it properly right will come to you. You need not have to fight for it.
We are fighting for rights either because we didn't do our duty or we were obeying someone or something blindly.
So to come out of this vicious cycle the only way is to understand duty with respect to your role.

Excellent take Shruti !
Very true that we need to be doing our duty in various positions and be assured it will bring the right results .
It was so good to see hanuman back with Sugreev to standby as the guide and source of strength to enable him to take up the responsibility of the King ( this support is what he had been missing ).
Today's fights for various rights are presicely the result of lack of knowledge with regard to their respective duties .
As we often express in this forum , the need of the day clearly is to enlighten our young student community with the rich treasure trove of knowledge available in these great works of Ramayana and Mahabharata .
Though many have a some hours of Moral science / ethics etc in the curriculum but there does not seem any genuine effort to impart values to the students . Though it could be made very interesting and relevant for students by actively involving them in discussions and debates etc thereby encouraging them to ponder on these subjects of duties , rights etc .

@vipraja it is moral science where some theory is taught. Ramayana and Mahabharatha are rich with practical knowledge which should come to our students.

Thanks for the great explanation, Sruthi di. The Ramayan is filed with characters who fulfill their duties ideally, and this is why they are revered today. But I have a question- What should you do when duties conflict?

Good post Shruthi. Every story in our scriptures place emphasis on fulfilling our duties and responsibilities .Ram could have sat on the throne instead of accepting the vanvass for 14 years, no one have blamed him for it. But he chose to fulfill his father's promise as well as a mother's wish. Lakshman
could have easily stayed back in the palace, but He and Urmila choose the path of personal sacrifice to fulfill the responsibilities of a younger brother .Sita need not have accompanied Ram to the forest, but her duties and responsibility towards her husband induced her to accept all the hardships without any regret. Vishnu could have repudiated the curse to be separated from his wife, but he thought that as the one who had unwittingly killed the Sage's wife,he had to uphold the responsibility for his actions.I tell my children some story from these scriptures when I feel that it sort of mirrors a modern situation. Both of us get to learn and understand from them .
Oh btw Shruthi,I was reading one of your old posts and somehow found the answer to my dilemma in them. Krishna choose you this time to help me out.So thank you.

@Savitha happy to know my post helped you out. And yes each had a choice and they took the hard choices to fulfill duties.
@Gowri moral conflicts are always part of life. Whenever moral conflicts come I always ask Krishna to show me the direction. If you ask earnestly my experience tells the direction comes that helps you to make the right choice. My only advice is whenever faced with moral conflicts never take a choice which your heart doesn't approve of for anything or anyone. Wait or ask for guidance.
