Swing Ride
How often do you see a brave warrior like Lakshman running around the palace all edgy and anxious? But this had become a common sight for Ayodhya palace
dwellers these days. It was afternoon and as Lakshman took his hurried steps towards his room he passed by a few dasis who looked at him and giggled. He
passed by his Mother Sumitra's room on the way who noticed him through slightly ajar door and gave an amused chuckle. She knew where he was headed and what
was awaiting him.
As Lakshman opened the doors to his room he saw his wife Urmila sitting on their bed. She was looking towards the window. Her face was glowing with soft warm
light. She looked angelic he thought. She had her one hand on her belly bump. It seemed like just yesterday when Urmila had announced to him that she was
pregnant and Lakshman remembered being the happiest man in the world. It was just a matter of few days now and he would be a father. A warm smile spread
across his face but he immediately shook himself from the trance as he knew what was coming. He sighed heavily and entered the room. Ever since Urmila was
pregnant she had terrible mood swings especially this month. As he entered he saw a platter with various dishes on it but it looked untouched.
As he entered the room Urmila looked at him and immediately looked away upset.
He took a seat next to her and spoke softly "Why haven't you eaten anything Mila?"
"I don't want to eat this." she said still looking away from him.
"But Why?"
"Because this is not spicy enough!" She yelled "I had specifically mentioned that I need something spicy to eat because I and my baby want to eat something
spicy but this is not as half as spicy as I had wanted it to be. No one listens to me or cares about me here. Including you." She said now breathing heavily
due to her nonstop rants. "That's it." She declared "I will go to the kitchen myself and cook what I want." She got up to leave when Lakshman held her hand
and calmly made her take her seat again. "Calm down my princesses. Let me check what is wrong with the dish."
He picked that dish from the platter and took a bit. He immediately started coughing. "Oh Lord!*coughs *coughs. This is incredibly spicy. *coughs." Urmila
looked at Lakshman concerned. He immediately took a cup of water from the stand and drank it. That helped a little.
"Oh Mila, this is really spicy but yes not as spicy as that dish you had prepared for me the first time after our marriage" He said with a Naughty smile on
his face.
Urmila's eye widened at his comment "What?" With a pout on her face she took a pillow from her bed and started hitting Lakshman with it in protest.
"Ahahaha. It was only a joke Mila. Forgive me" said Lakshman as he continued to laugh. Urmila stooped hitting him.
"You don't care about me at all. Do you?" said Urmila with the pout still on her face. Lakshman stopped laughing.
"I am not able to understand what I want to eat. Do I want to eat something sweet or spicy or sour? I don't understand if I want to sit or stand or sleep.
But you don't care. If you loved me even little you would know. But you don't."
Lakshman knew this was not his wife but the mood swings talking.
But she went on "You hardly spend any time with me. You had promised that no matter how busy you are we will at least have our meals together but I am sure
you have already had your lunch. It is just me thinking about you all the time. But I am obviously never on your mind. And also ..."
"I haven't had my lunch." said Lakshman interrupting her. She was shocked to hear this.
"Like I had promised Mila, I will have my lunch with you or only after you. I am sorry I am really late today but I had no intentions of making you wait. I
had thought you would have had your lunch by now. As soon as the dasi informed me that you are refusing to eat I left everything and came here. I.."
"You are going to leave me. Aren't you?" Urmila suddenly said with tears forming in her eyes.
"Huh?" Lakshman said shocked.
Urmila was now sobbing. "You are going to leave me and marry someone else. I am such a terrible wife. You were so busy with your work that you didn't even
have time to eat but here I am, your wife, who didn't even ask you if you had your lunch or not and has been complaining and complaining. I am so selfish.
Please forgive me. Don't leave me please!!" She now covered her face and started crying loudly.
'Oh Lord! Now where did this come from? Lakshman thought rolling his eyes. But he could never watch his wife cry.
He took her hands in his own as she continued to cry. Her cheeks were now wet and pink from all the crying. He cupped her face with his large hands and wiped
her tears. "Mila, look at me" he urged. She slowly looked at him with tears still in her eyes. Her long lashes were sparkling like there were diamonds
studded on them.
"Is that what you think of me?" asked Lakshman. Urmila lowered her eyes out of guilt. "Do you really think I would leave you for your little tantrums?"
Lakshman smiled and said "Honestly speaking, I find them really cute." Urmila smiled a little on hearing this.
"And you know very well that no one can handle my temper except you and no one can handle your spicy food except me. We are a match made in Heaven" He winked
at her. Urmila smiled. Now her tears slowly drying.
He looked at her earnestly and said "Mila, you know this very well that I cannot live without you." his eyes never leaving hers. "I have already gone through
the misery of our separation for 14 years and if the destiny demands another separation from you then my Love this Lakshman will not be able to survive that.
I will surely Di..." Urmila placed her fingers on Lakshman's mouth before he could finish his sentence.
"I will not forgive you if you continue" Said Urmila with pleading eyes. Lakshman smiled.
"But I will not forgive myself if I delay your lunch any longer. Let's have our lunch together ok?"
Urmila happily nodded. "But the food is too spicy for you." said Urmila.
"Hmmm true but if you are going to feed it to me then even the spiciest food is delicious to Me." said Lakshman lovingly making Urmila blush.
And both the Love Birds happily fed each other one bite at a time.
