yes, i do believe there is some truth in this...
Valmiki is not very open about sita's lineage but gives clues regarding it. and it does point to ravana and mandodari. while hanuman goes in search of sita in lanka he stumbles onto mandodari's room and mistakes her for sita as she is the copy of sita's appearance. the description that rama gave hanuman about sita matched precisely with mandodari.
then another point is regarding the etymology of the name mandodari : mandam means earth and udaram means womb. sita is known to be from earth's womb!
regarding ravan attending sita swayamvar, that does not happen in valmiki ramayana(which is wat i have read). and there was no organised swayamwar or dramatic scenes either.
