Misunderstood, misjudged, misled
Rejected, dejected, discarded
I am Ahilya
Abased, abused, accursed
Blamed, banned, berated
Turned to stone, cursed for life
By the very man who promised to protect and trust me
As we walked around the holy fire tied together in matrimony
Fragile, fickle and frail was his faith
Unfair, unreasoned, unkind his anger
For sinned was I not the sinner
Cheated was I not the cheat
In full faith and love I surrendered to you
How was I to see through Indra's ruse?
For years I waited, watched and wept
As your remorse, my sons tears, and pointing fingers
Broke my heart and ripped my soul
Was there a man, any man in this entire world
Who would feel my pain, and cleanse me
Of the guilt, the hurt and the agony
Someone who will touch me with tenderness and purity
Who will show me love, and tell me that I didn't sin
Some one who will hold my hand and lead me
He is here today, the Vishnu incarnate
He wept for me, he bowed with respect
His words like soothing salve on my weary self
I am Ahilya, the blessed
For I have been touched, honoured and revered
By The One, Himself,
Listen to him, learn to love
O people of the world, before you judge, criticise or chastise
Before you condemn, crucify or kill
I am Ahilya
And my story is not over yet
I still live in your homes, as your wife, or your mother, or your sister ...
