Lead doesn't mean he /she has to be the "goody good person or he/she must have perfect ending".
Kunal is main lead and Mauli is main lead too.
Kunal is the villain of the story and Mauli is the heroine.
End game will be the victory of Mauli and punishment of the villain.

But I also agree as per promo Kunan was the main...then they screwed up the whole thing and now doing damage control. 😕

Very well said Sabhayata. Kunal and Nandini were undoubtedly presented as the leads. But I do wonder if there were some misunderstanding/disagreements between the writers and the channel. Because if the writers indeed wanted to make them the lead, why are they so incompetent in doing so. Like its not one bad track or two. Its literally non stop butchering of of 2 of the 3 leads. Like Nandini the character vanished while the audience still hated her. Her white washing was so apparent that you could smell the paint from your living room and yet it was so weak nobody other than few ardent fans bought it.

I don't want to blame the channel alone either, because going by the first promos they were promoting "love story" of two people who could never be together. While Mouli was clearly not represented at all, Kunal and Nandini seemed to think and care about her. For many of us this was the biggest problem: they treated KuNan as a love story with no obstacles instead of EMA. Mouli's character was sidelined so much that during the whole EMA neither of the cheaters had more than one line to say about her. There was no conflict neither for the husband about cheating on his wife nor for the friend about betraying her BFF. That truly shows how much a writer values her character...

Maybe the channel walo thought that if they showed us hot chemistry then viewers wouldn't demand much and TRP will go up instead of showing EMA. So, when the initials few episode didn't do as good as expected; they resorted to OTT background music and cringe worthy divine scenes. But even if the writers had to change their ways, why couldn't they adapt their writing to the demand. I am sure there was a better way to whitewash Nandini than making her throw Mouli a birthday party ot make her pity herself by saying how sad she is that she can't have both her BFF and BFF's husband (can't believe this was an actual dialogue). And why did they hammer on the fact that KuNan were divine lovers? Why did they make Kunal lower than the lowest scum before the leap?

@bold: don't get me started on hero-fying of Kunal. Like a quintessential hero he is never wrong. In his own words he was apne jagaah theek tha when he had an EMA, when he left his pregnant wife and his child, he was literally worshipped by Mehek (even when he said he had cheated on his wife she was like no probs you can still have her now 😕), him kicking out Mouli was literally shown as HIS sacrifice...

(UGH Every time I have to revisit KuNan days I feel sick to the stomach. I can't believe that there is a whole cast and crew who wants to sell this as a pure love story and a more progressive way to look at EMAs .)

You know, that is the beauty of this serial.

Mauli is the most loved and came out on top. And Aditi gained all praises for her performance, though she wasn't as popular as Shakti and Drashti.

I think the story began getting butchered pre-leap with the EMA and divine angle, and they could have just show it to be Mauli's story after the leap, when they introduced Ishaan. But they obviously messed that up to.

It just surprises me that even despite the backlash and low TRP's, it just never occurred to the writers/producers/channel that after episode 74 (when Aditi put out that stellar, inspiring, perfect, award winning performance, and was being praised on every social media site ever, by the masses), that they not once thought about cashing in on viewers sympathy for Mauli and just show her journey to love and trust again.

But nope, they needed Shakti as their ML, so they kept bringing Mauli and Kunal back together, in some way or some form 😕. Well it backfired, and even still the masses want MauHaan. So justice and logic did prevail, except that they got the memo too late and couldn't save the show.
