The Hair Dresser

The chamber was aglow with a soft, golden light, casting a halo around Lakshman as he stood before the dressing table. His green dhoti was wrapped with the precision of a craftsman, and a crimson shawl hung lazily over his chiseled torso, like a flame draped over a rock. His long hair flowed over his shoulders in dark rivers, framing his face as he concentrated on Urmila’s cascade of waist-length tresses. She sat poised on the stool, her posture regal, as he deftly braided her hair, threading in jasmine flowers like fragrant stars and beads as delicate as dew.

A playful smirk danced on his lips as he teased her. “You know, dear, I believe I’ve discovered my true destiny. Perhaps it’s time to hang up my bow and become your personal hairdresser.”

Urmila’s laughter was like a chime in the quiet room, soft and melodious. She turned her head slightly, her eyes meeting his in the mirror. “And what, please tell, would Ayodhya say if the mighty warrior, famed archer and defender of dharma, traded his quiver for combs and pins?”

He leaned in, his voice a mockery of seriousness. “I’d be exclusive—just for you. ‘Lakshman: Royal Hairdresser to the Princess of Mithila.’ My fees? Only the richest currency—your kind words and boundless admiration.”

Her eyes sparkled with mirth as she played along. “Oh? And what if this illustrious hairdresser one day raised his prices?”

Feigning deep thought, he tapped his chin. “Perhaps I’d demand you proclaim me the most gifted husband in all of Aryavarta. A fair trade, don’t you think?”

Her laughter bubbled over, warm and bright, as she turned to face him, her fingers lightly brushing the edge of his shawl. “You’re utterly incorrigible, dear.”

“Incorrigibly talented,” he corrected with a roguish grin, his voice dripping with mock arrogance. “And don’t forget, utterly devoted to you.”

Her expression softened, the playfulness in her gaze giving way to something deeper as she touched the braid he’d so carefully crafted. Her voice was a whisper of affection. “I wouldn’t ignore you for anything in this world.”

Lakshman reached out, tucking a stray jasmine petal behind her ear. The teasing gave way to tenderness, his words now a murmur. “And I wouldn’t ignore this—for all of existence.”

In the tranquil silence that followed, their laughter melted into a warmth that wrapped around them like an embrace—a delicate dance of mischief and love that defined the symphony of their bond.
