Note: I have edited this post and added two questions plus, have changed and used more appropriate terms. Thank you for correcting and guiding me. I request everyone who views this post to answer these simple questions and help my research. Thank you😊

Hello everyone!
I am a third-year Journalism Hons. student. For my third-year dissertation, I have chosen 'Hijra representation and portrayal on Indian Television' as my topic. I think it is imperative for my dissertation to understand this topic by talking to people who watch the show and get a better insight about their opinions on the show plus representation of the kinnar community and portrayal on the TV screen.

It would be extremely helpful if you all i.e the viewers can answer some questions so, I can use it as 'audience reaction' for my research. I am really curious 😊

Please answer as many questions as possible with the correct serial number and order to it. Thank you so much.⭐️

Note: Please know that I will use your responses for my research. I will use your username and if you can write your sex, age and city on the top - that will add even more authenticity to my research. Thank you everyone.

1. Why did you start watching the show? What was the first thing that attracted you to the show?

2. Were you aware of the fact that Soumya's character is a 'kinnar' before you decided to start watching the show? What was your reaction to this revelation?

3. What do you think of Soumya's character?

4. According to some sources, Soumya's character might 'not' be a third-gender? If that were to be true, what would be your reaction to it?

( I am sorry! I am unable to post the link of the source as I am a newbie but if you are curious - you can find it on a site called bollywoodlife.com. Although, it's a rumor and a very old one at that, I am just curious about what would be your reaction to to it if it were to be true!)

5. Did the show in any way affect your opinion about the kinnar community? Please write your honest opinion about them.

6. Did you ever feel the urge to know more about the kinnar community? Did you ever research about them? (Even googling it and reading Wikipedia counts 😆)

7. Do you think having a lead kinnar character has had any impact on you personally and also the viewers - do you talk about the kinnar community more or have felt an increase in people's interest in the community and their representation?

8. Do you watch the show alone or with your family?

9. What is the reason now that you watch the show?

10. If you were to be the writer of the show, what changes would you make in Soumya's character?
(It could be anything from her ensemble to character, gender to relationship with others)

THANK YOU. I really appreciate you for taking the time to answer my questions. Please answer all the questions - it would really help my research. Please don't hesitate to answer my questions or add any additional information that you think might add to my research. Thank you once again.

1)i started watching the show for getting some knowledge of transgender
2. Ya i was knowing from before soumya is transgender
3. If i have to introduce i will simply introduce her and i would be happy to be friends with her
4 i don't know about this twist if it is coming then let me know
5. I am really afraid with them i usually go is in accordance but one time due to reservation problem i have to go in sleeper and when i seen them i was horrified and when they came to my seat i simply slept
And this show didn't change my opinion but ya i would like if they would be given normal upbringing and if they would like to live and behave like a civilised person firstly i used to thought that they are only that kind from beginning
6.ya i googled to know about transgender
7.i don't know
8 and now i am not watching but only came to forum after many days i think
And honestly if i have to present this type of story i will never present it like that
I have liked to present that she was raised as an independent girl by hiding her identity and she was never interested in love or marriage and only wanted to be independent and raise a children by adopting a kinner child or any sex because i believe that a person can live alone because we have no right to affect others with my feeing and my thinking but a boy came in her life who started to love her and she refused but she also started to love him and slowly opened her truth first he was not able to cpaccept but as a true lover he later understood and faught for her and later they can show some politics of in laws and how they faught and later adopted a transgender child and they can show the struggle of how they faught for child even and how they make him ready
It would have gave positive figure of kinner and honestly i never expected this
And now it has only became a story of barren lady no more difference i am able to see between a barren lady and a kinner
So basically from this serial i only got the conclusion that whatever type of woman you are doesn't matter untill and unless you produce a child i honestly i hate this concept as due to this very reason i left my husband INSPITE of being pregnant
It really doesn't matter you are kinner or whatever if you produce a healthy child you are everything
Woman identity is only reduced to being a baby producing machine

As this is part of your research so I will try to ans honestly...

1. Why did you start watching the show? What was the first thing that attracted you to the show?

Im a Vivian Dsena fan.So he was the reason I started watching the show..

2. Were you aware of the fact that Soumya's character is a transgender before you decided to start watching the show? What was your reaction to this revelation?

Saumya is not transgender she is eunuch in show. Transgenders are physically normal but mentally feel they are in wrong body. So a boy thinks he is a girl and a girl thinks she is a boy. But saumya's condition is having ambiguous genitalia means existence of both male and female sexual organs. This is what I have deduced from watching the show as Saumya's parents know her condition since her birth.

And yes media had already given the spoiler that Saumya might be an intersex or eunuch.

As I was already aware so no reaction from my side.

3. What do you think of Soumya's character? Please write how would you introduce Soumya's character to a friend.

Saumya has a very meek personality which we can understand because she was constantly abused by her father and granny. But still a 21yr person not aware of her sexuality is too much to digest. I find this a big loophole.

Saumya keeps on taking irrational decision and is a confused personality and blindly follows her mother in laws orders. She is not aware of basic human nature thats why got her sister married to her husband without realising that her sister is a normal girl who will obviously not want to share her hubby. Saumya just wants to live in Singh household and can sacrifice anything for it be it her self respect, her dignity , her mental peace or her sister. Don't know what she has achieved through all this.

4. What was your reaction to Soumya's character 'not' being a transgender? What do you think was the reason behind the plot twist?

Its not been shown till now. And if something like that is shown then it will be highly stupid because it will show that saumya still doesn't know he difference between man, woman and eunuch.

5. Please write your honest opinion about the kinnar community. Did the show in any way affect your opinion about them?

I feel bad for Kinnar community because they are not given basic right to live with dignity which I feel is everyone' right.

This show just shows Kinnars in bad light because every kinnar is either kidnapper or murder only Saumya is good hearted but still she is also dumb and selfish.

So good that it didn't changed my opinion in any way because whatever they are showing is half baked n totally unrealistic.

6. Did you, at any point of watching the show. research about the kinnar community? Did you ever felt the urge to know more about the community? (Even googling it and reading Wikipedia counts )

I had my concepts clear about LGBT community already so dint do any research. I keep on reading news articles etc.

7. What do you think was the whole outcome of the 'transgender character'? What do you think was the reason behind it?

Didn't understood the question.

But what i understood is you mean whether the show has done any justice to the concept.

Then I would say No. A mother did not told a child about hard realities of life and made her weak.So much crime is shown in the show. Polygamy and forced marriage is glorified here.

This "eunuch"concept was just used to create hullabaloo in media and led to free promotion of show. Also roping in popular faces led to acceptance of show.

8. What is the reason that you still continue to watch the show?

I sometimes watch it by changing the channels. Can't tolerate so much of negativity like murder, pelting through stones, domestic violence and constant verbal abuses. Also kitchen politics shows bores me.

1. Why did you start watching the show? What was the first thing that attracted you to the show?

I'm a Vivian fan n started watching the show only for him.

2. Were you aware of the fact that Soumya's character is a transgender before you decided to start watching the show? What was your reaction to this revelation?

There were numerous media articles that the female lead is a TG. So was aware of the Concept of the show before it went on air. But the FL is actually an eunuch but this was not explained in detail in the show. It all comes under the word ' kinnar'.

3. What do you think of Soumya's character? Please write how would you introduce Soumya's character to a friend.

Soumya's character is too weak n dumb . A adult living in the 21st century has no idea of the human anatomy is a little difficult to believe. That too when she is living with her mom n sis n also has female friends around. Secondly, why she still wants to continue living in the Singh household taking all the insults is a mystery . Thirdly, for her own selfish reasons, she has forced her sis to marry her husband .

4. What was your reaction to Soumya's character 'not' being a transgender? What do you think was the reason behind the plot twist?

The ph n the channel will not change soumya's character now. That is stupidity. This will change the whole concept of the show. All their talk about creating awareness will look foolish. Moreover the actor has all agreed that soumya is a kinnar in the show.

5. Please write your honest opinion about the kinnar community. Did the show in any way affect your opinion about them?

The kinnar community is shown in a very bad light which I don't think is true. One kinnar killing another, plotting n kidnapping is all very unbelievable.
Yes, the kinnar community must get recognition n status in our society. They also deserve all the rights which normal ppl r enjoying.

6. Did you, at any point of watching the show. research about the kinnar community? Did you ever felt the urge to know more about the community? (Even googling it and reading Wikipedia counts 😆)

I did google to know more about eunuchs, TG n intersex.

7. What do you think was the whole outcome of the 'transgender character'? What do you think was the reason behind it?

This whole concept was just an eyewash by the ph n the channel. It is just business for them n they roped in big actors for the lead roles so that it will not be rejected by the Audience. All that talk by the ph about creating awareness for kinnar is just talk. What was promised is not shown. In the end it's just kitchen politics n waaris drama .

8. What is the reason that you still continue to watch the show?
I don't follow the show anymore. Just read written updates once in a while.

Hope my answers will help with ur research. Good luck!

1)I am a Vivian Dsena fan (Male Lead) moreover the concept looked intriguing to me.

2)Yeah there were rumours already. I wanted to see this show because i personally feel kinnars should get a proper status in society. I had expectations that this show will bring change in our society.

3)At this point Soumya's character really needs a change. She's been suffering all the hatred right from the beginning. It's time to stand up for her rights.
If it were early days of shakti i would have said that she is sweet but needs a right guidance and support to stand up for herself. But now by what all she did i think she herself is ashamed that she is one of them which she shouldn't be ashamed of. Most importantly her identity is still unclear she's not a transgender. But an intersex (ambiguous genitals)

4) Till now it's now shown. And think it is completely off topic. If this ever happens, it will ruin the show because the show is all about the upliftment of transgenders/kinners/eunuch. And if the main plot is shut shown the show has no meaning.

5) i really feel bad for them as they are human beings at least if not a man or a woman and that's enough to get the rights to stay in the society with full dignity. Till now show hasn't focused on real difficulties of kinnars. It is only focusing on married life but what about those who stand on the red lights and are involved in prostitution, education, job etc. For many people kinnars are the ones who stand on the red lights and beg for money and shower their blessings.

6) Yeah i researched many times. Read articles. Etc

7) I had lot of expectations with the character Saumya but sadly PH is ruining the character for trps and longevity.

8) A Hope. That Cvs will show something sensible.

1. I started watching the show because of Rubina. I liked her in Choti Bahu.
2. No I didn't but we came to know about the third gender very soon after the show started. That made me more interested to watch. Otherwise I probably would have watched for a few months maybe. I am not a regular serial watcher. The third gender became a big attraction for me. As I thought I would get to know more about them and the show would show their empowerment and encourage their acceptance in society.
3. Soumya was brought up by her mother in a very shielded way. She was not allowed to go out even for education. She was taught at home. She used to see the outside world through her sister Surbhi. She was constantly abused by her father and grandmother. Attempts were made to kidnap her. She was very naive, ignorant about the world, did not understand why her father rejected her and why she was not allowed to go out or do any puja. She trusted whatever her mother said blindly. She was not freely allowed to play even indoors. She was kidnapped by Harman and forced into marriage by Harmans father. She was not aware that she was not a female. Then she went through a lot of trauma. After
getting married and knowing about her gender truth she tried to commit suicide, her mother in law and father forcibly sent her away to the kinnar society where she was imprisoned. Her mother in law tried to sell her off for human trafficking. She survived all that to return to her parents, but found her mother had died suddenly, her father did not let her return. So her husband gave her refuge, where she was kept in the servants quarter and constantly humiliated. She is an extremely good cook and good in making dresses. She is very forgiving and was shown to be a beautiful soul. But recently her character has been changed to be stupid, weak, ashamed of herself and a puppet of her mother in law. She was much stronger before. The only odd thing is that she looks very feminine and that has not been explained. Sometimes she is shown take stupid decisions. She is very dependent on others.

4. I think that would be extremely odd and unbelievable. How would her mother and grandmother not know about that when she was growing up.

5. They are human beings and should be recognised as such and given full rights in society. Initially the show showed their rituals and how baby kinnars are left by their parents, their rejection in society . That was very interesting. But now the show is representing them as criminals. I think the show is misrepresenting them and downgrading them and not acknowledging that actually this gender now has come far ahead in society working as governors mayors models etc. The show is 50 years behind in representing them.

6. Yes I have googled and read articles, read about the different types that exist, their biological condition, and how some can be rectified through treatment , watched documentaries on them. Have seen their enhancement in society which are all sadly lacking in the show.

7. Yes at that time I felt a great respect for the actor, for the producer and the channel to have courage to show this concept.

8. I used to watch the show with my family. Used to encourage my friends to watch it. Used to write about in my Facebook.

9. I don't watch it anymore regularly , read updates and forums and watch clips. The show has totally derailed from the original concept It shows unbearable negativity, polygamy, domestic violence, screaming, murdering people just like that. It has become disgusting and distasteful and has no logic or no sense. It is showing regressive ridiculous material since January.

10. First I would make her accept herself and not be ashamed of who she is. Then make her strong gradually and independent. Curious and interested in the outside world from which she has been deprived from so long. She used to crave to go out. Now she is seeing the world. I would have liked to see the wonder in her eyes when she experienced the ourside world. I would have shown her to start educating herself, with the help of the handful of positive people around her get street wise, develop her skills and then become a strong presence that would inspire all human beings and empower kinnars. Earn her living through respectable means. Adopt a child rather than depending on her sister to produce a child by marrying her husband. Become gutsy. I could go on.
