Chp 3

Soumya had scanned the crowd for her family only to find them arguing among themselves. She had no clue that her father had made up his mind to use her kidnapping as a ploy to get rid of her forever. The villagers had asked Harman who he was to which he had agreed to be the person responsible for the kidnapping. It had only served to add fuel to the fire. Men and women were now advancing towards them menacingly threatening to hang them by the noose. O teri ki he had thought he was not worried about himself he could face any penance but Soumya was innocent in this ordeal and he could not put her through anymore torture.

Nimmi who had been a silent spectator till now had managed to free herself and rushing towards them had pushed Harman behind her. She could not let these idiotic people hurt her child, Harman she could deal with later. Her interactions with the boy had led her to believe that he was in fact a harmless yet carefree soul who right now he along with her daughter needed protection. "Aunty jee" he had called to Nimmi "Rab di soh aap ki beti ki sirf hifazat ki hai mainey, kidnap to jee ghalati sey ker liya tha" he had tried to explain. "Tum sey to main baad main baat kerungi" Nimmi had fumed, if only God had given this boy common sense as abundant as his biceps she had rued.

"Nimmi hat jaa aagey se" Maninder had shouted, he had not wanted obstruction to his evil plans. "Khabardaar agar kisi ney inhain haath bhi lagaya" Nimmi had challenged the crowd who showed no signs of mercy. "Arey in beyghairton ko to phansi de deni chahiye" her neighbor Reshma had voiced to which the crowd had excitedly agreed, some had even started trying to grab Soumya from behind. Both Nimmi and Harman had now encircled a terrified Soumya who had clutched Harman's jacket for support. Her feet were wounded and she found it painful to stand. Amidst the mayhem Maninder had managed to get his rifle from the house.

"Nimmi main keriyan hat jaa aage se" he had roared aiming the rifle straight at Harman's head. Surbhi had screamed then, she had never seen this version of her father a ruthless man capable of murder. Harman too had been shocked to see a gun being aimed at him, he could feel Soumya's deathly grip on his arm. "Nahin Papaji" she had moaned and despite the life threatening situation he was faced with Harman had smiled. "Kyun Gulabo bandooq sey darr gayeen" he had joked "Kaha na merey hotey huey kuch nahin hoga tumko" he had assured her. "Papa bhalley mujhey maar daalein per maa ko aur aapko kuch na karein" she had sobbed. Harman had pulled her closer "Uff" he had whispered "Mar ker amar hona chahti ho... Soch lo taj mahal na banawana mainey tere vaastey" to which Soumya had stared in his naughty eyes. She couldn't believe he was joking in such a dire situation. "Jee!" was all she could muster when she felt a man pull her out of Harman's grasp. That probably had been the last straw for Harman, he had put on a calm facade to placate Soumya but not anymore. His right arm had made contact with the man's jaw with a bone crushing sound. Harman could see the crowd was intimidated with his battle skills.

A couple of valiant youngsters were now indulging in hand to hand combat with Harman. Nimmi was at her wits end how was she supposed to save her daughter. She had cautioned Soumya and screamed for her to go home. Even before she could decide whether or not to follow her mother's instructions she heard a shot being fired followed by a blood curdling scream. "MAA" she had shrieked as she saw her mother's shirt turn crimson. Surbhi had been at her mother's side in a flash. "Maa... Maa" she had called to her mother in desperation. Maninder who had shot the rifle was livid to have missed his target. He had of course aimed at Soumya but at the last minute Nimmi had flung herself in front of her daughter taking a bullet to her torso. Harman who had been grappling with the teenagers was now outnumbered; his brain was warning him to flee but his heart kept negating the suggestion.

"Maa" Soumya had cried rushing to help her sister who sat cradling their mother. "Somu puttar" Nimmi had groaned "tera baap tujhey zinda nahin choreyga, beta tuu bhaag jaa yahan sey" she had pleaded to a weeping Soumya. "Harman" Nimmi had called to him aloud and Harman had obliged kicking the shin of a villager sending him flying. "Jee auntyjee" he had answered understanding the urgency of the situation. "Puttar tuu meri Somu ka khayal rakheen, tuu issey yahan sey ley jaa" Nimmi had pleaded once again. Nimmi knew she was in no position to protect Soumya, her fear of the chudails had kept her awake many nights and now she was afraid of Maninder too. If she was not going to be able to protect her daughter the best she could do was to entrust her with Harman. Her heart had felt this to be the right decision for the moment, she would figure out a way to protect and keep Soumya with her as soon as she was in a position to.

Surbhi had watched her father run from the scene; she had felt betrayed by the one person who she thought loved her the most. If her father could open fire on her sister what would stop him from doing that to her too she had wondered. Soumya's tears fell thick and fast, Harman knew he could not keep the villagers at bay for long. Right now they were shocked to see Nimmi shot and had stopped trying to fight him but soon the shock would wear off and they would not spare both him and Gulabo, he HAD to run. "Aap fiker mat kijiye main Gulabo ko sanbhal luunga" he had promised Nimmi who had put Soumya's delicate hand in his. Her breath was short now and she was gasping for air. Harman could no longer delay pushing the crowd apart he had dragged a hysterical Soumya behind him. "Choro mujhey" she had shrieked. "MAA... Maa!!!" she had cried trying to free herself desperately. "Dekh Gulabo ab to auntyjee sey vaada ker liya hai tujhey hifazat sey rakhne ka" he had explained pulling her to him in one smooth move. She had tried to run away but Harman was smarter; sweeping her off her feet he caught her struggling form in his arms taking her away from all she had known.
