A Pale Blue Dot

Look again at that dot. That's here. That's home. That's us. On it everyone you love, everyone you know, everyone you ever heard of, every human being who ever was, lived out their lives. The aggregate of our joy and suffering, thousands of confident religions, ideologies, and economic doctrines, every hunter and forager, every hero and coward, every creator and destroyer of civilization, every king and peasant, every young couple in love, every mother and father, hopeful child, inventor and explorer, every teacher of morals, every corrupt politician, every "superstar," every "supreme leader," every saint and sinner in the history of our species lived there--on a mote of dust suspended in a sunbeam.

The Earth is a very small stage in a vast cosmic arena. Think of the rivers of blood spilt by all those generals and emperors so that, in glory and triumph, they could become the momentary masters of a fraction of a dot. Think of the endless cruelties visited by the inhabitants of one corner of this pixel on the scarcely distinguishable inhabitants of some other corner, how frequent their misunderstandings, how eager they are to kill one another, how fervent their hatreds.

Our posturings, our imagined self-importance, the delusion that we have some privileged position in the Universe, are challenged by this point of pale light. Our planet is a lonely speck in the great enveloping cosmic dark. In our obscurity, in all this vastness, there is no hint that help will come from elsewhere to save us from ourselves.

The Earth is the only world known so far to harbour life. There is nowhere else, at least in the near future, to which our species could migrate. Visit, yes. Settle, not yet. Like it or not, for the moment the Earth is where we make our stand.

It has been said that astronomy is a humbling and character-building experience. There is perhaps a no better demonstration of the folly of human conceits than this distant image of our tiny world. To me, it underscores our responsibility to deal more kindly with one another and to preserve and cherish the pale blue dot, the only home we've ever known.

-- Carl Sagan, Pale Blue Dot, 1994

This excerpt from Sagan's book Pale Blue Dot was inspired by an image taken, at Sagan's suggestion, by Voyager 1 on February 14, 1990. As the spacecraft left our planetary neighbourhood for the fringes of the solar system, engineers turned it around for one last look at its home planet. Voyager 1 was about 6.4 billion kilometers (4 billion miles) away, and approximately 32 degrees above the ecliptic plane, when it captured this portrait of our world. Caught in the center of scattered light rays (a result of taking the picture so close to the Sun), Earth appears as a tiny point of light, a crescent only 0.12 pixel in size.

Look into the mirror the next time you come face to face with it and in it your own face. Look, really look into your eyes and look into your self, that lies somewhere past all that flesh, hair, bones and muscles.

I have tried many a time ( jobless) to look, seek and touch that self, me and have miserably failed many a time for there is no one point where our self resides and it is the complete package.

I sat before my desktop computer and was googling a poem when i froze and went still in fear and in shock as the realization hit me that I was no different from the desktop PC.

I am flesh, my brain is flesh and really a CPU, Ram, motherboard all thrown in one package and all that I know, think I know is operating software that has been borrowed and with that borrowed knowledge I have made my own calculations, deductions, concoctions and have preened and pranced filled with Euphoria and Ego.

WTF, Thats it. Flesh from my parents. Knowledge from others. But, EGO and SELF are Me and Mine only.O.HA.

Enna kozhuppu. Thimiru. Aanavam.

Appo enna thaanda intha Vazhkai.

Once you have stared into the abyss and seen the glimmer of reality and the truth, it is just downright impossible to go back to the old Self and so I have chosen solace in silence.

O..A, this is what wiser men than you have been telling and preaching for thousands of years.

Aiyo, appo, that is also not originala.

Appo, enna thaan mudivu.

Good morning. I wish you a beautiful day.

The earth has been alive for nearly 4.5 Billion years. Life has been around for nearly 3.5 Billion years. Humans have been around for nearly 2.5 Million years. Modern civilizations have been around for about 8 to 10,000 years now.

Our human species has survived many natural calamities and also man-made calamities and yet, has thrived and is doing pretty well. Human genocide, Spanish flu, plague, famine, ethnic cleansing, smallpox, Typhoid, cholera, malaria, Tuberculosis have all tried to end our species and have failed.

Soon, this coronavirus too will be just another disease on our list and we will have developed immunity to it.

So, don't worry too much about it and just take the necessary precautions. All the best.

Dr.Otto Hauptmann and V.k.Singh were discussing the finer points of the meeting that had just concluded in which they had discussed India's defence needs with other Mossad officials and also a few top people from the Army and Airforce.

This was the reason why Raman had not been included in the meeting for he had yet to be given complete security clearance that would have allowed him to have been a part of the meeting. But, the most important reason was also that when it come to India's needs, General V.k.singh trusted no one, not even Raman whom he trusted and valued more than himself and who he secretly saw as his own son.

Hearing the knock on the door, Dr.Otto yelled ' enter' and looked at Aaron who came in and rather than stating the purpose of his visit, stood looking at him with a weird expression which prompted Dr.Otto to glare at him and ask, ' so, you have finally become a mute.'

Aaron was well versed with his chief's moods and anger and knew that it was all pure pomp and show and cleared his throat loudly and mumbled, ' Raman is in the gym.'

' Raman, what, Gym?'

Aaron decided that he would gently punish his boss and said patiently, ' Raman is in the gym, working out and you had ordered me to inform you the moment he was there.'

' Thank you, Aaron, you may go' Otto dismissed him and looked cheerfully at V.K.Singh who glared at him and then the glare changed to a look of worry and pity.

Dr.Otto Hauptmann spread his hands, ' what? come on V.K, I am just going to test the kid and put him through his paces and see if he is really as good as you think he is. The worse outcome, his ego will be bruised but he will learn a few tricks from me.'

V.K.Singh smiled and shook his head and said, ' you stupid, old dog. It is your ego that is going to be bruised and not my boy. Listen to me very carefully, I have seen you fight when you were in Raman's age and you were good, really good but this boy is different and he is way better than you were at his age.'

V.K.Singh stood up and slowly made his way around the table and standing face to face with Otto said, ' my friend, you know what scares me the most about Raman.'

Dr.Otto Hauptmann in an irritated voice asked, ' What, please, enlighten me.'

' I think there is more to him than he lets out and that unknown is what scares me and which should rightfully scare you too.'

Returning to his chair, V.K.Singh went back to looking at the files in front of him, ' Be happy that I will not be there to see your embarrassment as your old a..s gets beaten again and again.'

' One more thing Otto, you will do well to remember as to not to goad him too much with your tricks and taunts.'

DR.Otto growled, ' that goes with the territory V.K and your boy must learn to fight dirty if it comes to that.'

V.K.Singh sighed wearily, ' I know how Raman is when he is calm and cool but I have no idea how he will react when he looses his famous composure, Otto. So, you will do well to remember that important fact.'

Dr.Otto Hauptmann left fuming and charged to his room like a bull that was ready to go on a rampage and he muttered as he slowly changed into his Krav maga Gee.

Raman opened his eyes for he heard the ringtone and that meant Jeeva and Jeeva only.

He answered with a cheerful hello and then asked her how she was doing.

' We are all okay sweetie. How is your work treating you there?'

' Nearly done, baby. I can safely say that I will be back either tomorrow or the day after. In fact, I am in the gym and just finished my workout and am ready to head back to the office.'

Jeeva fell silent and Raman sensing something wrong, asked her worriedly, ' Jeeva, what is it, beautiful?'

Jeeva began to speak and she slowly narrated the whole incident that had taken place in Crowne Plaza, Adyar Park.

' Jeeva, who is this man?'

' A friend of Kavita's and we all met him for the very first time, Ram and his name is Radha Krishnan.'

After a few moments of silence, Jeeva spoke, ' He reminded me of you, Raman. Fearless in spirit, gentle, calm and courteous and I think he and Kavita are in love with each other.'

After a few more minutes of talking to her and asking her to take care and be alert, Raman said bye and slowly placed his phone back in his bag and at the same time, the gym door opened and in walked Dr.Otto Hauptmann.

Talk about bad timing and bad days. Well, this was one such day.

21 gun salute to 21 days of quarantine

A 21-gun salute is the most commonly recognized of the customary gun salutes that are performed by the firing of cannons or artillery as a military honoUr. The custom stems from naval tradition, where a warship would fire its cannons harmlessly out to sea until all ammunition was spent to show that it was disarmed, signifying the lack of hostile intent. As naval customs evolved, 21 guns came to be fired for heads of state, or in exceptional circumstances for heads of government, with the number decreasing with the rank of the recipient of the honour.

These words are my words, my own thoughts and my reflections and are totally general in nature and emotion.

1-' Wtf, 21 days. But, how do I survive 21 days machaan, when I can't be in the house with her for 21 minutes?'

2- 21 days of quarantine and that too at home with my family. I would rather spend that time in Puzhal jail with other cell mates.

3-21 days and that too morning to next morning and most of that spent looking at strangers who are supposed to be my family.

4- 21 days, what will I talk to her when I haven't spoken to her in many years and that too not for more than a few moments.

5- 21 days, wtf, what is she initiates sex which we haven't had in many years and I am not even sure if I am interested in it and that too with her.

6-21 days, no bar, no party, no flirting, no nothing.

7- 21 days of secrecy. WTF, how will I chat with that new chick on the sly for 21 days.OMG

8- 21 days and I have to act the goody, goody spouse and the caring spouse.

9-21 days, I have to sleep with the enemy, spend time with the enemy and under the same roof.

10- 21 days of having to listen to my dad and mum nag me about values and how I could have been better, done better than Tom, dick and harry.

11-21 days of locking myself in my room that equates to solitary confinement.

12-21 days. But, our marriage will fall apart for it is the space between us that is keeping this thing, whatever going.

13- 21 days. no morning walk. no meeting my friends and share dirty jokes over hot filter coffee.

14- 21 days of not feeling the sand and the waves and the morning sun at close quarters.

15- 21 days of no Gym and weight

16- 21 days. no work because I am an actor and all shootings have been suspended.

17- 21 days, no feeding dogs and crows.

18- 21 days without seeing my God, shiva in the nearby temples

19- 21 days without going to the library

20- 21 days, shut the f..k up for it is now just 20 days, you idiot.

“Inside me, there are two dogs. One is mean and evil and the other is good and they fight each other all the time. When asked which one wins I answer, the one I feed the most.”

The human species is at once both good and evil and also blessed with something more than that. In, no other species do we see this capacity to help, protect and nurture more present than in that of the human species. We call Mother nature God and worship it in all its basic elemental forms, such as fire, earth, sky, lightning and water and have also gone further than that and given God human forms and have raised him and her along with ourselves to a higher level. Yet, today, in the 21st century, man, stands in the court of nature accused of several crimes, both against nature and himself.

As always, my thoughts, my reflections before a chapter are but my decipherings of life in its daily, mundane form and also in its vast eternal cycle.

There is me, I and yes there is also us, we and them. But which dog do you feed first, the I dog or them dog. Confusing, not really. Think of only yourself, then I dog. Think of that and those outside your body and soul, them dogs.

That is the question, my lord, that fine balance between good and bad and that more scarier path that is neither good or bad but dark and murky. Many walk that path out of choice, some for want of choice and many step into it and retreat out of it sensing its potential for evil and crime.

Crime against humanity, no, but a crime against your conscience and that we call the all-seeing eye, God.

' All warmed up and ready, Raman' Dr.Otto yelled as he entered the Gym and Raman replied without even turning or opening his eyes, ' ready for what Dr.Otto?'

' Ready to test your Judo against my krav maga style?'

' No,I am not and not today and not ever.'

This was an answer that Dr.Otto had not come prepared for and he had not the faintest idea how Raman's advocate brain worked and was working now.

His polite challenge had ricocheted off Raman like a bullet would bounce off a wall and headed directly back at him and his mood changed and he lost his composure.

The advice and in the end warnings that he had been given by V.K.singh back in their room now felt more like taunts to him and he forgot the golden rule of fighting and that is to lose your cool and to fight with anger.

He slowly walked across and standing in front of Raman who still sat in his lotus position and said, ' So, you accept that our style of fighting is better than Judo in which you are a champion and that I am better than you.'

Raman opened his eyes and Dr.Otto saw that they were different now and wrongly assumed that his taunts were hitting home and finally getting under the skin of the young man.

But, Raman's eyes really only reflected the torment and worry that had gripped his soul from the moment Jeeva had told him about the attack on Kavita and them at Crowne Plaza hotel.

Raman closed his eyes and tried hard to contain his irritation and said, ' Yes, I accept that you are a better fighter than me but I refuse to accept that Krav maga is better than Judo for both the styles are different and it is a futile attempt to match them in a fight.'

Then everything changed with Dr.Otto Hauptmann's words, taunts to be exact and I request you to go back to the first lines of this chapter about the two dogs inside us after you have read them.

' Well, in my experience, I can usually tell what kind of man, the master is from his student and seeing you, I can judge that your sensei Devarajan must be that kind who hide behind peace and non-violence.'

Raman opened his eyes and asked ' What are you inferring to by the word, that kind?'

Dr.Otto smiled for there was no mistaking the fires that now blazed in his opponent's eyes and went for the kill' isn't it obvious, the weak and cowardly kind.'

V.k.Singh, Aaron and the other Mossad agents who were watching the whole thing on a large screen, gasped in shock at the cruel and harsh nature of Dr.Otto's words, barbs and taunts.

' Damn you Otto' a deep voice whispered and all of them turned to see a tall bearded man standing there and V.K.Singh immediately raise his hands and saluted him and said, ' Sir, I had no clue that you were here.'

Rudran smiled and replied ' At ease, Mr.V.K and there is no need for all this formality between friends and moreover you are my senior when it comes to your work.'

V.K.Singh looked at Rudran with respect and affection, ' That may be true sir but you outrank me and as a career soldier, I am duty-bound to salute my superior officer.'

Rudran smiled and headed for the door and V.K.Singh asked him ' sir, our friend Otto is going to fight, don't you want to watch it?'

Rudran turned and shaking his head said, ' No, I don't want to watch that old F..t get his ego and sorry a..s beaten down. But, he deserves it for hurting Raman.'

' Sir, you met him. where, when?'

' I met him and also requested him to go easy on that stupid old man. So, don't worry, Raman will toy with him and then it will end with that.Bye, V.k' and with those prophetic words spoken, Rudran left them and they all slowly turned back to the screen and at the same time, Raman got up and stood facing Dr.Otto Hauptmann, head of Mossad.

“Never respond to an angry person with a fiery comeback, even if he deserves it...Don't allow his anger to become your anger.”

Dr.Otto Hauptmann knew very well that his words were unfair and yet he had spoken it deliberately and knew that it had hit home for Raman slowly rose to his feet and stood staring at him.

Raman's face that was clouded with anger and pain slowly relaxed and he said, ' Dr.Otto, if it was a fight, that you wanted with me, all you had to do was just ask me and I would have obliged. There was no need for all these taunts and insults and that too at my sensei who I think of as a father.'

Dr.Otto knew that anything he said now would be seen as a sign of defeat, decided instead that he would wade in deeper and continued with his taunts, ' Maybe, it is not about you and your sensei and maybe it is just about what you are good at, Judo which you have realized by now is not equal to my Krav Maga style of fighting.'

Raman as was his nature, lifted his left hand and pointed to the middle vacant of the gym and said, ' Please' and walked towards the large empty space where the floor was cushioned and on which the Mossad staff practised their fighting skills.

A small crowd of nearly 20 people had by now gathered around the large screen and one of the technicians began to pivot the cameras that were in the gymnasium and slowly zoomed in on both the men.

V.k.Singh leaned into Aaron and said ' I hope this is being recorded for I promise you that it will come in handy for future references.'

Both men stood facing each other and then Raman slowly bent his upper body in a bow but with his eyes firmly locked on the man who stood before him and said, 'I salute the one from whom I am going to learn.'

Back in the office floor, most of the Mossad agents began to place bets as to who was going to win and how long the fight was going to last.

One of the Mossad agents turned and asked V.K.Singh, ' how good is your agents judo?'

V.K.Singh looked at him, ' His Judo is very good but so are his other styles of fighting too.'

Aaron and the others turned hurriedly and looked at him and Aaron asked V.K.Singh, ' what other styles, sir?'

V.K.Singh shrugged casually, ' I know that he nearly became a national champion in Judo but could not take part in that championship for he fractured his leg just before the contest. I also know that he went to Japan for a world tournament and placed second. I am also aware that he is highly skilled in a few secret South Indian styles of fighting. But..?'

' But what, Mr.V.K?'

V.K.Singh looked at all of them, ' That is all I know about Raman, but stop and think as to what we don't know about him.'

Down in the gym, on the mat, both men slowly circled each other.

Dr.Otto Hauptmann knew himself very well and knew perfectly well that at 62 years of age, he would not last as long his 32-year-old younger foe who was considered one of the best by his own dear friend, V.K. So, that meant, he had to finish this fight quickly and take Raman down and make him accept defeat.

Raman, on the other hand, was slowly purging all thoughts away and was emptying his mind and was entering the essence of what martial arts were all about.

A good fight is when a fight is not fought at all.

A good defence is not fighting at all.

The best win is not fighting at all.

But, when a fight does happen, engage without emotion, particularly anger which is a wall that a true martial artist will never do.

Like in life, everyday life, Preconceived notions in martial arts are a taboo.

So, Raman did what all the masters over 4,000 years had taught him and which was ' be still and be like the five elements.'

Can We Forgive China?

If any other country had sparked such a mammoth international crisis, it would now be in the global doghouse

THE INCALCULABLE HUMAN and economic toll exacted by the spread of the novel coronavirus from China promises to shake up global geopolitics, including China’s position in the world. With the 21-day India lockdown—the largest national shutdown in history—nearly half of the global population is now under some form of lockdown, thanks to China’s disastrous, initial missteps that allowed the deadly virus to spread far and wide.

After the global crisis is over, the West’s relationship with China is unlikely to go back to normal. Efforts are expected to begin to loosen China’s grip on global supply chains. Moves are already afoot in the US Congress to bring the manufacture of essential medicines back to the US, which currently relies on China for 97 per cent of all its antibiotics.

Asian countries were the first to be affected by the transnational spread of Covid-19 from China. In fact, only after Covid-19 cases with Wuhan links were detected in Thailand and South Korea that China acknowledged its epidemic when the People’s Daily on January 21st admitted human-to-human spread and publicised Chinese President Xi Jinping’s first comments. The bitterness over China’s role in triggering the pandemic will likely linger in Asia. After all, the lives of many will never be the same.

As US President Donald Trump has said, “the world is paying a big price” for China’s initial, weeks-long cover-up of the Covid-19 outbreak in Wuhan city and other parts of Hubei province. From November 17th onward, according to a South China Morning Post report based on Chinese government data, Wuhan doctors recorded one to five cases daily, before infection rates spiralled and a raging epidemic unfolded. However, China waited until January 21st to issue the first warning to its public. By then, the spread of the virus had gone beyond its control.

A study based on sophisticated modelling has indicated that if Chinese authorities had acted three weeks earlier than they did, the number of Covid-19 cases in China could have been reduced by 95 per cent and the global spread of the disease limited. The virus spread farther and wider because the Communist Party of China (CPC) cared more about its reputation than the Chinese people’s suffering or the transnational impacts.

Make no mistake: China faces lasting damage to its image. The CPC not only engineered the pandemic, however inadvertently but also has sought to save face by unleashing a sustained disinformation campaign aimed at creating doubts over the new disease’s origin in China. Chinese diplomats, for example, have unabashedly sought to blame the US for the virus. But such outlandish propaganda has few takers.

The images the world has seen of markets in China selling wild animals for slaughter on the spot have served as a reminder of how Beijing ignored warnings from its own experts since the 2002-2003 Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS) pandemic, which also originated on Chinese territory. Infectious-disease specialists based in Hong Kong, in a study published in 2007 in an American journal, said the presence of a large reservoir of SARS-like ‘viruses in horseshoe bats, together with the culture of eating exotic mammals,’ was a Chinese ‘time bomb’ that raised the ‘possibility of the re-emergence of SARS and other novel viruses from animals or laboratories.’

In fact, just months before the Covid-19 outbreak in China, a biomedical study by four Chinese presciently warned that a new coronavirus will emanate from bats, with ‘an increased probability that this will occur in China.’ The Chinese hunger for the rare, exotic and dubiously curative has fostered wildlife farming, provided a cover for poaching and threatened to drive endangered animals to extinction.

Videos showing Chinese wolfing down pangolins, wolf cubs, dogs, snakes, hedgehogs, civet cats or other animals not only contribute to China’s image problem but also underline the dangers of another deadly disease originating in that country. The CPC wields the big stick to muzzle dissent at home but not to change tastes or attitudes that could give the world yet another pandemic after SARS and Covid-19.

Covid-19, meanwhile, has cast an unflattering light on the only institution tasked with providing global health leadership, the World Health Organization (WHO). Under Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, WHO’s first chief who is not a medical doctor, the institution’s credibility has taken a severe beating.

Tedros, who served as Ethiopia’s health minister and then foreign minister, has mismanaged WHO’s efforts to contain Covid-19, declaring it a pandemic only on March 11th, weeks after the virus had spread across the world. This contrasts with the alacrity with which he has defended China’s Covid-19 response at every stage.

In fact, before China came clean, Tedros actively aided CPC’s efforts to ‘play down the severity, prevalence and scope of the COVID-19 outbreak,’ as two US-based scholars have pointed out. Health officials in Taiwan, which instituted Covid-19 preventive measures before any country, have said that they alerted the WHO on December 31st to human-to-human transmission by detailing how Wuhan medical staff were getting ill. Yet, based on Chinese inputs, the WHO declared on January 14th that there was ‘no clear evidence’ of such transmission. The WHO changed its position only after China belatedly admitted transmission between humans.

When countries like the US, Italy and India banned travel to or from China, Tedros publicly opposed such restrictions on February 4th, warning that they will have “the effect of increasing fear and stigma, with little public-health benefit.” Tedros has further politicised WHO’s role in the current crisis by lavishing praise on Xi, saying he has displayed “a very rare leadership,” and paying tribute to Chinese “transparency,” despite the CPC’s intrinsic aversion to transparency.

Founded 71 years ago, the WHO remains overly bureaucratic and too dependent on some major donors to independently coordinate international health policy, which explains China’s growing sway over that United Nations agency, including shutting the door to Taiwan’s entry. After Tedros’s overt politicisation of international health, the damage to WHO’s credibility will not be easy to repair. Calls are already growing for him to resign.

The lesson from SARS—the first pandemic of the 21st century—was that state transparency and early and accurate public warning are essential to fight the major outbreak of any disease. But Beijing did the opposite during the Covid-19 outbreak, as underscored by a favourite social-media line, ‘China lied and people died.’ Beijing helped spawn a manmade calamity that has created an unparalleled global crisis.

When the outbreak occurred in Wuhan, China acted decisively not against the virus but against the whistle-blowers.

In fact, China also covered up the SARS outbreak for more than a month, holding the doctor who blew the whistle on it in military custody for 45 days. And, in the past 19 months, secrecy and under-reporting of African swine flu cases in China has created one of the worst livestock epidemics ever that has killed millions of pigs there. China’s Covid-19 role, however, will rank as the most dangerous cover-up in modern history.

Had Beijing sought to confine the Covid-19 outbreak to its central Hubei province by suspending all travel from there as soon as it became aware of the gravity of the problem, the novel coronavirus might not have spread to other parts of China or to other countries. Instead, it put no restriction on international travel, including from Wuhan, thereby helping to spread the disease internationally.

WHEN COUNTRIES LIKE the US, Italy and India blocked flights to and from China, Beijing expressed dismay, saying such bans went against the WHO recommendation not to restrict travel and trade. ‘In disregard of WHO recommendation against travel restrictions, the US went the opposite way,’ the Chinese foreign ministry’s spokesman said on Twitter in response to America’s January 31st travel restrictions. ‘Where is its empathy?’ Beijing called for lifting the ban while cajoling small, financially vulnerable countries to keep their borders open to Chinese travellers.

In Italian cities, individual travellers from China held placards at public intersections that read, ‘Please hug me: I am a Chinese, not a virus.’ And videos showing them receiving hugs from passersby were telecast in China by the state media to signal that the world still loved China.

Now, by spreading unfounded conspiracy theories, China is seeking to deflect criticism for its role in starting a pandemic by covering up the coronavirus outbreak at home. Indeed, the Chinese leadership is facing a credibility problem at home over its secretive initial response to the outbreak. It has sought to save itself from the people’s wrath by spreading conspiracy theories on the origin of the virus and by patting itself on the back for supposedly bringing the spread of the disease under control. Xi has been portrayed as a hero who is leading the country to victory in a ‘people’s war’ against Covid-19.

The Covid-19 crisis has not stopped the regime from going after anyone daring to expose its initial cover-up. Beijing property tycoon Ren Zhiqiang, who called Xi a ‘clown-emperor with no clothes,’ has been missing since mid-March. ‘I see not an emperor standing there exhibiting his ‘new clothes,’ but a clown who stripped naked and insisted on continuing to be an emperor,’ Ren had said in an essay that blamed Xi for silencing whistle-blowers and suppressing information on the outbreak.

Many Chinese are still seething over the regime’s initial concealment and mismanagement of the crisis. The public anger at home, coupled with the damage to China’s global image, has prompted Beijing to launch a public-relations blitzkrieg, including churning out conspiracy theories.

As if China’s role in starting a global pandemic was not enough, Beijing is now unleashing a pandemic of lies. To be sure, fabrications and disinformation are integral to China’s ‘three wars’ concept: public opinion warfare, psychological warfare and legal warfare. Consequently, the circulation of disinformation is an old Chinese tactic.

With its ‘three wars’ doctrine, Beijing has sought to send two messages to the rest of the world: ‘we did everything to stop the outbreak; in fact, we bought you time;’ and ‘the virus probably didn’t even originate in China.’ The paradox is that the two messages, built on falsehoods, are contradictory. But that does not bother the regime, which has published a propaganda book in multiple languages, including English, Arabic, Spanish, French and Russian. The book, touting its handling of the disease, is titled, A Battle Against Epidemic: China Combatting COVID-19 in 2020.

China’s combative public diplomacy involves the use of Twitter and other social media platforms to influence the international narrative through misinformation and disinformation. Zhao Lijian, the new in-charge of the social-media propaganda machine, has recently used Twitter to push unfounded conspiracy theories, including that the novel coronavirus was brought by US Army officers who visited Wuhan in October 2019.

Before becoming the Chinese foreign ministry’s spokesman in Beijing earlier this year, Zhao was China’s deputy chief of mission in Pakistan, where he honed his social-media propaganda skills. In Pakistan, Zhao peddled conspiracy theories on Twitter (which is banned in China) and added ‘Muhammad’ to his name (until Beijing outlawed the use of ‘Muhammad’ and other overtly Islamic names in Xinjiang and elsewhere). His appointment as a foreign ministry spokesman signalled that Beijing was moving from aggressive diplomacy to brazen diplomacy. Zhao’s actions have helped validate that hypothesis.

More broadly, China is now seeking to aggressively rebrand itself as the global leader in combating a virus that spread internationally from its own territory. Its rebranding effort includes counter-pandemic aid to developing countries, a pledge to donate $20 million to the WHO and a massive PR campaign, which extends from a claim to have fully contained the coronavirus in its worst-affected areas to disseminating plain disinformation so as to obscure its disastrous missteps that gifted the world a horrendous pandemic.

With the help of the CPC’s propaganda organs, Beijing is trying to fashion a narrative that China is an example of how to control the spread of Covid-19. In fact, like the arsonist offering to extinguish the fire it started, China is now seeking to help other countries combat a dangerous pathogen after its own gross negligence led to that virus spreading across the globe.

The attempt clearly is to deflect liability for a global crisis whose costs continue to mount. After all, if any other country had sparked such a mammoth international crisis, it would now be in the global doghouse.

Beijing’s proactive attempt to rewrite the history of the pandemic, even as much of the world grapples with its escalating consequences, highlights its well-oiled machine. Yet, when the Covid-19 outbreak occurred in Wuhan, China acted decisively not against the virus but against the whistle-blowing doctors, eight of whom were detained. This underscores that, for the world’s strongest and richest dictatorship, power and control take precedence over everything else, including human lives.

Having spawned the global coronavirus crisis, China is now planning to exploit the financial and other disruptions that the pandemic has engendered. It is hoping to game the situation in order to gain greater technological and industrial advantage. But the international anger over its role in triggering the pandemic could frustrate its plans.

The pandemic’s lesson for many countries is that, in an increasingly interconnected and interdependent world, China’s secrecy and obfuscation are antithetical to globalisation and international security. Transparency is essential to make us all safer. China cannot have its cake and eat it too. It must fundamentally reform and abide by international norms.

If the pandemic upends the world order as we know it, China’s role will be a key trigger.

The syllable gu means darkness, the syllable ru, he who dispels them,

Because of the power to dispel darkness, the guru is thus named.—?Advayataraka Upanishad, Verse 16

The name in Hebrew can be translated as "contact combat". The root word Krav means "combat" and Maga means "contact".

Krav Maga is a military self-defence and fighting system developed for the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) and Israeli security forces derived from a combination of techniques sourced from boxing, wrestling, aikido, judo, and karate along with realistic fight training.

It was derived from the street-fighting experience of Hungarian-Israeli martial artist Imi Lichtenfeld, who made use of his training as a boxer and wrestler, while defending the Jewish quarter against fascist groups in Bratislava, Czechoslovakia, during the mid-to-late 1930s. In the late 1940s, following his migration to Palestine, he began to provide lessons on combat training to what was to become the IDF.

Krav Maga has a philosophy emphasizing aggression, and simultaneous defensive and offensive manoeuvers. Krav Maga has been used by the Israel Defense Forces' special forces units, security forces and by regular infantry units. Closely related variations have been developed and adopted by Israeli law enforcement and intelligence organizations. There are several organizations teaching variations of Krav Maga internationally.

Dr.Otto Hauptmaan raised his hands in a classic boxing position and edged forward with his left foot leading his attack and with his left hand leading to jab and probe while his right hand was ready to deliver the knockout punch.

Raman knew that Dr.otto was testing him out by changing from his krav maga style and coming to him with a boxing style and decided that he too would mimic his older foe and wait and watch patiently as to where this fight would lead them both.

He knew that this was just a matter concerning Otto's ego and had even forgiven and forgotten the taunts that the man had tossed at him about his master and his art.

Raman's very nature and his essence rebelled at this petty and unnecessary display of male egos but his teachings also reminded him that when called upon, it was his sacred duty to not only learn from life but also be ready to impart, share and spread what he had learnt if the opportunity arose.

Standing at 5 feet 10 inches and weighing about 80 kilos, Dr.Otto looked supremely fit and mean as he shuffled forward towards Raman.

Standing a bit over 6 feet and weighing about 82 kilos, Raman had not only height advantage but reach advantage both with his long arms and legs.

The left-hand jab thrown by Otto spat at his face like a snake and was followed by a tremendous punch to his jaw and Raman expecting this simply shuffled to his left and otto just found air.

Huddled in front of the screen, Aaron screamed loudly and the rest of his colleagues groaned and threw their hands up in frustration and V.K.Singh wondering what the fuss was all about asked ' Whats going on?'

Aaron hurriedly, ' My boss just left his right flank open and Raman who shuffled to his left could have delivered a crippling kick using his right leg at the exposed right side.'

V.K.Singh nodded with a smile, ' Maybe, that is what your boss wants but Raman refused to take the bait.'

That was exactly what Otto had planned when he left his right side open and after throwing first the jab and the punch had immediately gone to rest his weight on his left foot so as to kick with his right leg, but Raman did not oblige and only shuffled away.

Dr.Otto wondered, ' Did he do that on purpose or did he just move away trying to evade my punches?'

The sudden crinkle of doubt that creased Otto's forehead did not go unnoticed by Raman who pretended as if he was unaware of what had taken place and stood breathing calmly waiting for the next move that his opponent was going to make.

Dr.Otto Hauptmann crouching low as to offer as little a target as possible slowly began to move forward with his left leg sliding, seeking maximum grip and then he threw a few quick punches which Raman blocked with his arms and then Otto suddenly threw a straight kick with his right leg at his opponent's midriff, a kick that had it connected would have put him down for sure. But, as before, Raman had already moved and this time he just shuffled backwards out of the reach with the grace of a ballet dancer.

In life, sometimes it pays to be aggressive and to use rage as a tool to achieve your goal but it is a dangerous game to play with anger and the power it brings for they never fail to cloud your thoughts, judgement and you become narrow-minded and your vision is now just that of a tunnel at the end which lies your goal.

If Raman had expected Otto to calm down and come at him with more thought than aggression, he was wrong for his foe instead charged directly at him and began to rain punches, kicks at him.

Raman absorbed all the punches and kicks that Otto threw at him using his upper arms and shoulders and his thighs and withstood the onslaught barely breaking a sweat.

The seed of doubt that had planted itself in his mind now bloomed into a tiny shoot and his eyes again flared with them and the fear that came along with it.

Aaron and all the others who were watching this along with V.K.Singh realized that their boss was out of his depth and that all the aggression and rage would not be able to beat Raman.

Dr.Otto took a deep breath and growled, ' are you going to strike me or not? or will you just keep playing this defence game of yours.'

Raman smiled, ' Otto, I don't think at all when I fight and I just move. I don't dig dip and draw up anger and other violent emotions without a good cause for them for they do more damage than good in the long run.'

Dr.Otto snarled like a wild beast, ' you and your Buddhist philosophies. The world outside is not a playground or a place for a picnic but a deadly game of life and death.'

' Exactly, Otto, and you being a doctor and a martial artist should know better and also realize that everything is not about life and death, not even in this business of espionage.'

' Then, what is it about, Raman?'

' You tell me sir, for it is you who wanted this fight with me?'

' I have nothing to tell and I just want you to stand still and fight me.'

' But, that is what we have been doing these past few moments, Otto.'

Dr.Otto smiled sarcastically, ' fight, what fighting have we been doing? It is me who has been doing all the attacking and it is me who is doing all the fighting and wasting my energy and time, while you are just dancing around the mat.'

Raman slowly folded his hands across his chest and stared into Dr.Otto's eyes and said, ' exactly. So, finally, you have realized what is going on here?'

Otto nodded wearily and then dropping his hands to his side, mumbled, ' Me, it is me. I was not fighting you but fighting myself,my ego and my arrogance.'

Aaron, V.K.Singh and the other Mossad staff members watched silently as their boss slowly bent to his waist and whispered to Raman, ' Master, teach me for I am ready to learn.'
