A son took his old father to a restaurant for an evening dinner.

Father being very old and weak, while eating, dropped food on his shirt and trousers.

Others diners watched him in disgust while his son was calm.

After he finished eating, his son who was not at all embarrassed, quietly took him to the washroom, wiped the food particles, removed the stains, combed his hair and fitted his spectacles firmly. When they came out, the entire restaurant was watching them in dead silence, not able to grasp how someone could embarrass themselves publicly like that.

The son settled the bill and started walking out with his father.

At that time, an old man amongst the diners called out to the son and asked him, "Don't you think you have left something behind?".

The son replied, "No sir, I haven't".

The old man retorted, "Yes, you have! You left a lesson for every son and hope for every father".

The restaurant went silent.

Vaanathai Pola 41

On September 15, 1961, millions of Americans who subscribed to Life magazine pulled the latest issue from their mailboxes and beheld something remarkable inside: a letter from President Kennedy addressed to them. But if the fact of the letter was a pleasant surprise, the glow wore off quickly: JFK’s news wasn’t good. “My Fellow Americans,” he wrote, “nuclear weapons and the possibility of nuclear war are facts of life we cannot ignore today.”

Kennedy went on to explain that the federal government would soon begin a program “to improve the protection afforded you in your communities through the civil defence.” A national survey was in the offing, one that would identify “all public buildings with fallout shelter potential,” and mark them accordingly.

In other words, the federal government was devising a way for 50 million Americans to survive a nuclear war by scurrying to the nearest basement. The National Fallout Shelter Survey and Marking Program had begun.

It’s the stuff of nostalgia now. Kennedy’s letter and the shelter program he announced happened 56 years ago. It’s a Cold War footnote, a misty memory lost in the era of bouffant hairdos and Gunsmoke.

Or perhaps not.

With North Korea’s intercontinental ballistic missiles, or ICBMs, pointed west and President Trump’s atomic sabre-rattling, fears of nuclear war have crept slowly back into the public consciousness. If the headlines rekindle some of the old unease about air-raid sirens and mushroom clouds, they’re also an occasion to consider a singular relic of the period that, oddly enough, never left us—the fallout-shelter sign.

General V.K.Singh and Raman were picked up from the hotel in a black Mercedes and the single bodyguard assigned to them sat in the front seat along with the driver.

Raman and V.K watched as the vehicle drove around and finally after nearly 30 minutes drove into the basement parking of a large office building.

Then, they stopped briefly outside an entrance to what appeared like a private garage to both Raman and V.K.Singh and they watched with fascination as the metal shutter slowly but smoothly rolled up and granted them passage.

Four heavily armed men looked at their pads and at the faces of all four inside the vehicle and scrutinized them closely and then one of them waved his hand and another metal shutter rolled up and allowed them to pass through.

Raman remarked, ' they are pretty serious about their security arrangements, boss.'

The vehicle came to a halt outside a glass door which had six elite armed commandos standing guard in front of it and in front of them, stood Dr.Otto Hauptmann, the head of Mossad, dressed casually in faded jeans and a sweatshirt.

He greeted both of them with the standard Hebrew greeting ' Shalom' and they, in turn, said ' Shalom.'

(Shalom also spelt as Sholom, Sholem, Sholoim, Shulem is a Hebrew word meaning peace, harmony, wholeness, completeness, prosperity, welfare and tranquillity and can be used idiomatically to mean both hello and goodbye.)

Opening the glass door he led them into a large elevator and pressed the button ground floor and the elevator instead of going up dropped down and Raman whistled loudly and observed, ' Guess, this station can also work as a nuclear fallout shelter.'

' Yes, Mr.Raman but this is not just a station that is deep underground but Mossad itself and this is the nerve centre from where we run all our operations around the world.'

The elevator door opened and they stepped out into a very normal and cliched looking office world but one where hundreds if not nearly a thousand people were hard at work.

Raman quickly peeped back into the elevator prompting Dr.Otto Hauptmann to comment, ' We are nearly 300 feet underground and far removed from the world above and work is going on elsewhere in this complex where we are going down even further.'

Raman smiled, ' that means only the CERN built Large Hadron Collider is deeper than this construction at nearly 575 feet.'

(CERN French pronunciation derived from the name Conseil européen pour la recherche nucléaire, is a European research organization that operates the largest particle physics laboratory in the world. Established in 1954, the organization is based in a northwest suburb of Geneva on the Franco–Swiss border and has 23 member states. Israel is the only non-European country granted full membership.CERN is an official United Nations Observer. It is officially and widely known as The European Organization for Nuclear Research.)

(The Large Hadron Collider (LHC) is the world's largest and highest-energy particle collider and the largest machine in the world. It was built by the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN) between 1998 and 2008 in collaboration with over 10,000 scientists and hundreds of universities and laboratories, as well as more than 100 countries. It lies in a tunnel 27 kilometres (17 mi) in circumference and as deep as 175 metres (574 ft) beneath the France–Switzerland border near Geneva.

Dr.Otto Hauptmann raised a finger and wagged it and said, ' Sorry, Mr.Raman, but as always and boringly so, the Chinese have done it again and have gone deep, very deep into the earth below us and have built the Jinping Underground Laboratory at a depth of an incredible 7,900 feet (2.4 kms) under a mountain in western China – the equivalent of seven Empire State Buildings stacked on top of one another.'

Realizing that they had lost V.K.Singh in their discussion, Dr.Otto Hauptmann clapped his hands softly, ' Okay V.K., me and Raman will chat later and we will return now to the matter at hand and the one that has brought you to our land all the way from India. Come, my team is ready with the information that you seek and we will talk more in the situation room.'

Good morning. I wish you a beautiful Monday and I hope and pray that you have a wonderful week ahead.

" Vaanathai Pola" is the title of the new story that I have been writing in these past few weeks and I have just posted the 41st chapter. The title must be quite familiar to many of you for a film with Vijaykanth released in 2000 and which was directed by Vikraman.

But, my connection with this rather simple and innocuous word started in 1992 and has stuck with me ever since. I love stories. I love movies with good stories and that is filled with family drama, sentiments and am a sucker for tragedies and I am literally bowled over by sacrifices and acts of empathy.

Actress Sukanya, the heroine of the film arranges for a simple feast for the villagers which is a practice and where the people who come to eat, leave behind money to help in her plight.

After the lunch is over and the place is empty, she begins to remove the leaves with the help of Gowndamani and slowly picks the cash that starts from 1 rupee and goes up to 50 rupees and then she comes to the leaf where the hero Vijaykanth, the village head had eaten and lifts the leaf to find a Thali lying there and she looks up in shock and in tears and that is when the most important song of the film begins playing filled with beautiful lyrics and accompanied by beautiful music composed by the Genius ISAIGNANI, who else and well..

As large and wide as the sky. Never-ending and infinite. That which cannot be described but only experienced and that which is called God and Love.

Love is shallow when it is only between bodies and only meant for sex.

Love is beautiful and heavenly when it means sacrifice, trust, companionship, tolerance and friendly.

Just like God, I can never, ever completely grasp this beautiful emotion although I have felt it, blessed by it and protected by it.

As I stand gazing at the rising, morning sun whose light covers and embraces all that it surveys, I smile, pray and thank my life for I have been blessed with many suns around whom I rotate caught in their gravity.

They know, you know who the stars of my system are and they are my heavens and they are the very earth that I stand on and the air that I breathe.

Thank you for being my sky. Lots of love and best wishes. Be well.

Government vs Self Governance -1

“Sometimes it is said that man cannot be trusted with the government of himself. Can he, then, be trusted with the government of others? Or have we found angels in the form of kings to govern him? Let history answer this question.”― Thomas Jefferson

Good government is no substitute for self-government-Mahatma Gandhi

Self-governance, self-government, or self-rule is the ability of a group or individual to exercise all necessary functions of regulation without intervention from an external authority. It may refer to personal conduct or to any form of institution, such as family units, social groups, affinity groups, legal bodies, industry bodies, religions, and political entities of various degree.

Self-governance is closely related to socio-philosophical concepts of self-control and self-discipline, and to socio-political concepts of sovereignty, independence and autonomy.

self-control and self-discipline. Just these two words, two virtues, two modes of thought translated into action means happiness, harmony and importantly, most importantly peace.

Happiness is fleeting. Happiness is temporary. Happiness is exhilarating and a high. But, it is nothing compared to peace and that which is permanent.

Every day. Every single day, I sit for dinner and in vain switch channel after channel that I can watch while eating. But, all that I hear is screaming, yelling, abusing, accusing, name-calling, name bashing from the so-called learned men that are that days panel.

Forget Coronavirus for Arnab Goswami virus does more damage to my ears and psyche and hurriedly cursing and spitting like a tom cat, I change channels and as always come to one of the two, Sun Tv's Aditya or Kaliagnar's sirripoli featuring my favourite comedian Vadivelu.

A smile fills my face. My curses transform to chuckles and happily I eat my dinner in peace.

Days when I am not working, I rouse myself, motivate myself to step out late in the evening for a walk. A part of me dangles choicy music listening time to my soul and I nod cheerfully, like a happy monkey being offered a snack and off I go.

Siiiiiiiigggggggghhhhhhhhh. Yup. I take a deep breath and sigh my home, belongings out of my mind and tap the music player app on my phone and I am spoilt for a choice.

Alan parsons, dire straits, Clapton or Cale. Shah Rukh and Aamir smile at me from the 90s and I tapped the 90's file and immediately " raja ko rani se pyaar ho gaya" filled my ears and my soul and like a bird on a branch, I flapped my imaginary limbs, shuffled and set off for into the fading light, with my back against the setting sun.

Earlier in the day, much earlier in the morning, I had visited the beach after my workout in the gym and had met up with all my four and

two-legged friends.

I had faced the sun rising and now my back was against the same sun that was dipping in the west.

Something profound and magical always whispers, croons tunes and words into my soul and turns me into an object of magic too.

I sat on a broken boat, abandoned on the shore, far away from the sea and where it should rightfully be.

The clothes of the boat, its multi-coloured paint was fading away and weeds and grass grew in its broken joints.

The boat seemed to tell me, ' bro, I wish they would sink me deep into the bosom of the sea mother and in whose embrace and arms I could sleep for eternity. After all, my parents, the tree from whom I sprang up from grew up with water and earth and now they are gone while I remain abandoned on the beach, rotting and tanning under the blazing sun while I could have lain in the cold and deep abyss of the sea.'

The sea churned and moved and threw up a large wave and sprayed salt and vapour into my lungs and joined the sea inside my soul that is churning and churning.

The setting west side sun lost its fire and white and turning orange then red in twilight and then just fell away.

I pressed on the earth with my feet, trying to tell her to hold on for a bit longer so that I could stare at the beautiful sunset.

Back home, I removed my shoes and fine grains of sand fell from my socks and shoes and then feeling a small jab, I looked at my right inner calf and saw a splinter sticking to my track pants and recognised it from the abandoned boat.

Sand, shard and the sea along with the setting sun.
