Inspector Rajarajan was affectionately called Pigrajan behind his back and yet none who called him that had any affection for him. I think his character, his soul, his evil thoughts permeated through the pores of his skin and made people instinctively react to him and recoil away from him.

One of his senior officer who Pigrajan had worked under in Kancheepuram had remarked with sheer distaste and repulsion, ' That Inspector Rajarajan is a disgrace to this department and I have no clue how he even became an Inspector in the first place. He burps, he farts, he scratches his a..s, digs his nose and eats like a wild animal and then snores like a beast.'

Another officer Assistant Commissioner Iyaakannu had gone even further to describe Inspector Pigrajan when he had said that if by chance a poisonous snake happened to bite Rajarajan, the snake would probably be the first one to die from the sheer evil and poison that flowed in Pigrajan's body.

But cops like Inspector Pigrajan exist and exist in great numbers all over India and they fill posts ranging from a constable to DIG and maybe even a DGP and let loose havoc and chaos in many people's lives and all for what. Money, power and greed.

The Managing director of Global Hospitals, Subash Rao stood up more out of fear than common courtesy and greeted Inspector Rajarajan who shook hands with him very politely and then his complete attention shifted to Jayaprakash, the hospital's security chief who too had stood up with his boss but he had done so for he had been a cop once and knew what a difficult job it was.

Inspector Rajarajan looked at Jayaprakash and speculated in a casual manner, ' Sir, you look very familiar. It is obvious that you are a retired police officer but I am sorry for I am unable to recollect where we have met before.'

Jayaprakash smiled without any display of emotion and said, ' you are unable to recollect because we have never met before now.'

' Oh! I see. Myself, Inspector Rajarajan, crime branch.'

' I am Jayaprakash and I am the security chief of the entire chain of Global hospitals in India. I am a retired Additional Superintendent of Police, crime branch, Vellore.'

Inspector and retired ASP stood shaking hands but at the same time weighing, judging and gauging each other and in a matter of a few seconds, both knew who the other was and what mettle they were made of.

Managing director of Global Hospitals, Subash Rao said, ' Please, sit down and make yourself comfortable.'

All three sat down and Subash rao asked Inspector if he wanted anything to drink and Pigrajan nodded, ' An apple juice will do just fine, for now.'

His last two words " For now " sounded ominous in the way it was said and all Subash Rao could do was nod, attempt a pathetic smile and then he picked up the intercom and told his personal secretary what needed to be sent to the cabin.

Then out of courtesy and also respect, he looked at Jayaprakash, ' JP Sir, anything for you?'

' I am good sir. Thank you.'

Then the game began and like it always begins. You circle around, evaluating the situation and then you gently lean into it probing, prodding before playing and laying all your cards and in the end pull out that winning card from its hiding.

But a pack of cards have both an Ace and a Joker.

Inspector Pigrajan was a predator, street smart and to top them both was a dangerous animal that never let go of its victim once it had clamped its jaws shut. He was a born shark, a killer shark that had smelt blood and now slowly began to move in for the kill.

This is how you indulge in a power play.

He deliberately chose to ignore The Managing director of Global Hospitals, Subash Rao who was the boss and instead started a friendly chat with Jayaprakash.

' Sir, did you really retire or did you opt for VRS?'

' Why do you ask that, Inspector Rajarajan?'

' Sir, please call me Rajarajan or Raja. You are a senior officer and that too you have retired as an ASP. The reason for my question was you look far too young to be a retiree.'

Jayaprakash smiled politely, ' I am a retired person and I retired 8 years ago.'

Inspector Pigrajan pretended to be shocked out of his wits and protested, ' What do you mean you retired 8 years ago? That means you must be nearly 66 years old. How can that be when you don't look a day over 50 years for you are that fit and trim looking.'

Both, Managing Director of Global Hospitals, Subash Rao and Jayaprakash looked at each other and thought in their own heads, ' wish we could say the same thing about you, Inspector Pigrajan.

The apple juice came and the apple juice disappeared down the throat and into the large vault of a stomach of Inspector Rajarajan who placed the mug back on the table and not on the coaster that had been placed there.

Burping loudly, he quickly dove right into the matter by looking at his file and saying, ' I would first like to meet the two witnesses, Kali and Senthil and talk to them and then I want the CCTV footage of the hospital for the entire day, both inside and outside and as quickly as possible.'

Looking up at Jayaprakash, ' Sir, I will talk to you in the end after I am done with this investigation, is that okay?'

' Perfectly okay, Inspector. I will be here in the hospital and will not leave until you are done.'

Inspector Rajarajan nodded and then called his immediate senior officer, Assistant Commissioner Paul Prabhakaran and spoke to him, loud and clear.

' Sir, Good morning. Yes sir, just got back today morning, sir. I am okay sir. Sir, I am here at Global Hospitals investigating that case regarding that large blood puddle that was found behind the hospital.'

He looked up sharply and worriedly, ' okay sir, I will call for the dog squad right away. Thank you, sir. I will have the report ready by tomorrow morning.'

The call over, Inspector Rajarajan grunted his thoughts, ' AC Paul Prabhakaran wants all the I's dotted and the t's crossed and he wants no stone left unturned in this case.'

The smile he gave them resembled the gaping jaws of a shark that had circled in to deliver the killing bite and they heard him say, ' Dog squads means instant attention from all media. I am so sorry but my senior wants this done properly and by the book. He says that the reputation of this great hospital must be protected at all costs and the good name cleared of any doubts that may arise from this case as quickly as possible.'

The MD of Global hospitals, Subash Rao who had been suffering from a bit of high Blood pressure for a few years now felt his heart pick up its pace and worried if it would somehow manage to explode out of his rib cage. Clutching his heart he shook his head in despair and looked at Inspector Pigrajan, ' Sir, Dog squad, Investigation. Is all that necessary when we don't even know what happened?'

Inspector Rajarajan got up and replied very casually and softly, ' That is why I am here sir for I need to know what happened and how so much blood was found there but no trace of any dead body nearby.'

He grunted again and again and it didn't take Subash Rao and Jayaprakash too long to realize that the Inspector was thinking hard or plotting hard and hatching a plan to make money, a lot of money.

Done thinking, Inspector Rajarajan smiled his killer shark smile again and told The MD of Global hospitals, Subash Rao that he was going to leave now for a cursory check of the scene of the crime and he would return when he was done and they could talk more and decide what to do and how to go about things.

' By things, I mean the case and the name of this hospital, sir' he said and then turned to Jayaprakash, and said,' sir, pleasure meeting you sir' and waddled out of the room.

A few moments later, the phone rang and Subash Rao answered his personal secretary's call, ' what now?'

' Sir, that thing calling itself an Inspector stopped at my desk and demanded a few more glasses of Apple juices be sent to him while he was investigating the case.'

' Yes. Give him whatever he wants and please inform the staff to treat him with absolute respect and that goes for you too. Don't use the word, that thing again when you talk about the Inspector.'

MD of Global hospitals, Subash Rao looked at Jayaprakash, 'what do we do now, Jp sir?'

' First, get in touch with our legal counsel and immediately apprise them of the situation and then prepare for the worst or else....'

' Or else what, Jp sir?'

' Be ready to pay him and the Assistant Commissioner whatever they demand and I am sure the bribe they will demand is going to run into a few lakhs or more.'

Subash Rao's face went a shade of crimson due to the anger and angst he was feeling and he looked at Jayaprakash, ' sir, the Commissioner is a good friend of mine. I will call him and request him to get this Inspector off this case.'

Jayaprakash nodded, ' you could do that but what then, sir. What is the guarantee that the next person on this case will be an honest person? '

Leaning forward, ' My question to you is what is your primary objective?'

' Protecting the reputation of this hospital at any cost and at best, minimize the damage that may result in spite of our efforts.'

' Exactly. But, if you call the commissioner and request him to change the Inspector from this case, He is going to ask you for the reason behind it and at the same time wonder if we the hospital has anything to hide in this case. Then, think of the repercussions when this Fat Bast..d of an Inspector leaks information to the press that he was replaced because of you and what if the press lands here looking for a case, a crime when we are all in the dark about it.'

Subash Rao, who was on the verge of mental collapse, asked, ' what should I do now, Jp?'

' Pay him what he asks for and do it quietly. But, have a legal counsel with you when you agree to that terms.'

' What about you Jp sir? you will be there surely?'

' No. I am sorry but I cannot be witness to any sort of crime for then I will be forced to report it. I might have retired but the fires of a police officer still burn brightly in my soul.'

Getting up, he said, ' Call the person who handles your legal affairs and ask them to come down here immediately.'

He turned to leave but stopped and smiled and said, ' Don't worry sir. It is going to be all right.'

Adhu-1

Adhu means, It, and also, that, depending on the context where it is being used.

It was nearly 7.00 pm when the Autorickshaw finally came to a halt outside a house with large verandahs on both sides of its large but single door. Gayatri got out and stood admiring the door which was obviously teak and had intricate designs carved into it. The door was the only entrance into the house and also was the single break in the verandah that ran continuously from one edge of the house to the other edge and housed six large wooden pillars, three on each side.

The Auto driver pointed to the house, ' Ma'am, this is the house of the person, our Sir, who you have come looking for.'

Looking at his watch, he said, ' It is but still seven and I am afraid that you might have to wait for another 30 to 40 minutes before Sir returns here to his home.'

Gayatri smiled and thanked him and remarked, ' Please forgive if my question offends you in any way, for, believe me, that is not my intention at all.'

' Ma'am, you look like a very kind and gentle person and our sir always says that in most cases, our looks, our eyes, smiles reflect the true nature of our soul and its intentions. Also, you have come to visit him and that makes you not only his guest but a guest for our entire village. So, feel free and ask whatever you want to ask, but..?

' But, what Mr....'

The auto driver smiled and said, ' My real name is Ganesh but sir calls me Brahman. Pleased to meet you.'

' Hi, Brahman. My name is Gayatri. The pleasure is all mine.'

She looked at him and smiling indulgently, ' How is that you speak English so fluently? I am sorry but please forgive this childish but irritating curiosity for your diction and accent is very good and I think far superior to even mine.'

Brahman smiled, ' Sir, ma'am.'

Gayatri immediately looked towards the road and Brahma with a smile said, ' ma'am, I meant the reason for my English and for I am today is Sir and only sir.'

She saw his chest fill visibly with pride and seep upwards into his lips and eyes as they blazed like stars and heard him say, ' This town that Kumarapalayam is now was once a Village with a literacy rate at about 20 per cent and then in a matter of few years, Sir, brought it up to nearly 90 per cent and today it is the only town, place in the whole of Tamil Nadu that can boast a 100 per cent literacy rate.'

' Wow! Incredible. This is a story worth telling and a story that should be taken to all corners of the world for it will serve as an inspiration to all people from all walks of life.'

' Ma'am. You must obviously know what the garden of Eden is?'

' Yes, the Bible talks about it as a heavenly paradise that God created for Adam and Eve and which was eventually lost to man because he was deceived by Satan and temptation.'

' The bible is wrong, ma'am, for the Garden of Eden exists to this day!'

' Where? what are you talking about?'

Brahman got up and spread his hands around, ' this ma'am, our town Kumarapalayam is Eden and heaven on Earth and for all of us, Sir is our God who guides us and shepherds us as if we were his flock of lambs.'

This was all too much for Gayatri to take in and she smiling indulgently, she thought that hero-worship ran deep in the blood of all Indians and extended that worship to celluloid heroes and political heroes.

Brahma looked at her and nodded with understanding, ' I know it is too much to take in but you have yet to meet sir and you have yet to hear about all that he has accomplished for this land and also all the other towns and villages that surround Kumarapalayam.'

Then both heard the tinkling of a cycle bell break the silence of the night and Brahma pointed to the road, and nearly jumped up with joy,' Sir has arrived.'

Without even realizing that she had done it, Gayatri stood up and looked curiously at the lone figure on the road that was heading towards them.

The street lights shone upon him and on his white shirt and khaki pants and reflected off his glasses.

Then out of the darkness and streetlights came the man and into full view.

Her first thought on seeing him was, ' he is a young man. It cannot be for the way Brahma was going on and on, I thought his sir was an old man in his late 50s or 60s.'

Ravi Kumar parked the cycle and looked at both Gayatri and Brahma and if her presence there at his house was a surprise, he did not reveal it even in the slightest.

But, he smiled and folded his hands and said, ' Good Evening, ma'am. My name is Ravi Kumar. Welcome to our town and I also warmly welcome you to my house.'

Gayatri had been married for nearly five years and all those five years had been physically and mentally traumatic ones, for her ex-husband and had been a brute and a psychopath in all senses.

That had been twenty years ago and she had sworn and had convinced herself that almost all men had some kind of evil or potency for violence.

But not this man for somehow he was different from all the men that she had met and also the few with whom she had slept with.

She looked at him wondering what the difference was when she heard his soft but deep voice, ' Ma'am, would you like a cup of sukku kaapi or a glass of buttermilk?'

Care or Control

Excellent, With a Lesson...

Read on !

I was in a a consultation with a middle age couple. They started fighting right in front of me. The upset husband said- See doc....I 'care' so much for her & this is what I get in return..To which the fuming wife replied- He doesn't care...he just 'controls'...!

The care from one person was perceived as control by another !

Made me think...what is care and what is control?? How to identify them??

Soon I received the answer.

I had an argument with my teenage daughter over a trivial disciplinery issue...Harsh words were exchanged leaving both of us in tears...

After sometime, as our emotions settled down , we said sorry to each other...My daughter hugged me and said-Papa ,you know why you got upset? You were not upset because I did wrong..but because I didnt follow your instructions....there is a big difference..!

I was stunned with her mature thinking pattern. ..I received my answer too... I was trying to control her under the disguise of care...that caused the conflict ....

If I really 'care' for someone , I will not get upset or angry with that person...I will keep searching different ways to help them.p

If I am struggling in any relationship...I need to closely observe if there is any subtle control hidden behind my apparent care...because

Care is an expression of love while control is an expression of ego...

Control cuts...Care connects ...

Control hurts...Care heals...

Keep caring for people but dont control them ... because often people are not wrong...they are just 'different'...

Keep caring... 😊

Adhu-2

When you see a person, do you just concentrate on their looks? It's just a first impression. Then there's someone who doesn't catch your eye immediately, but you talk to them and they become the most beautiful thing in the world. The greatest actors aren't what you would call beautiful sex symbols. Brad Pitt

Gayatri smiled at Ravi, ' I don't mind either one of them. Although, I hate to admit that I am so famished that I am ready to have both the buttermilk and sukku kapi. But, just one small doubt.'

9 out of 10 people would have said something as a way of a reply but he did not. Instead, he patiently looked at her and waited for her to finish stating her doubt.

' Mr Ravi, what is sukku kapi?'

' It is a hot drink made out of dried ginger. It can be had with or without milk.'

9 out of 10 people would have gone on to explain more about the drink and yet, here he was using his words as sparingly as possible and Gayatri's first impression about Ravi was that he was a man who spoke very little and what little he spoke was to answer and convey very precisely his thoughts.'

' Without milk, Mr Ravi for I am lactose intolerant.'

Even his smile was a limited stretch of his thin lips and then he enquired, ' Ma'am If you are okay, you are welcome to have dinner with us..'

' Please, Mr Ravi, call me Gayatri.'

' Okay. ah....................' he began and then hesitated,

' Miss. It was Mrs, once, but that was a long time ago' she said and then realizing that both men were looking at her and realizing that she had dropped her guard quickly faked a smile and said, 'Thank you for the dinner invitation. I really appreciate it.'

Ravi nodded and then he looked purposefully at Brahma, ' sir, what about you?'

Brahma nodded, ' Iyaa, I was just waiting for you to ask and my answer is yes.'

' Very good. Just give me a few minutes to set the things up' and saying that Ravi went into the house.

Gayatri looked at Brahma the auto driver who realizing what her look meant, quickly informed her, ' Sir's mother is a great cook and the only other person to rival her in the kitchen is Sir himself.'

' He cooks too?'

Brahma's face filled with pride, ' Yes but very rarely.'

' So, us means him and his mother. What about his ...? Gayatri asked casually and then quickly apologized, ' Sorry, I am very sorry for it is none of my business and I have no right to even casually pry into other's personal stuff. Sorry, Brahma.'

Brahma shrugging his thin bony shoulders, ' It is okay ma'am. But since you asked, Sir is single and has always been single' and realizing that he was giving out to much information, shut himself in a hurry and looked at her, ' Ma'am, you did not hear that from me, okay?'

Gayatri asked, ' you are that scared of your, sir?'

' No ma'am. Not scared but I and the rest of us, respect and love sir so much that we would rather die than upset him or hurt him even in the slightest way possible.'

Before she could say or ask more, she caught sight of Ravi coming out of the house with an elderly lady who was obviously his mother.

' Miss Gayatri, this is my mother, Rasaathi ammal' and turning to his mother, ' Amma, this is our guest Miss Gayatri who will be joining us for dinner.'

The MD of Global hospitals, Subash Rao quickly called his advocate Mrs Deepika Mathur the head of the law firm, Deepika, Pradeep & George associates of law but found out to his dismay that all three of them were in Delhi for a couple of high profile cases that were up before the Supreme court.

Advocate Deepika Mathur apologised profusely and said she would get in touch with one of her colleagues immediately and see that someone capable was present at Global hospital as soon as possible.

All he could do was say okay and thank you and doing that he fell silent.

Advocate Deepika Mathur reassured him, ' Mr Subash, don't worry about this Inspector. He is just using strong-arm techniques to scare you and fleece you out of as much money as possible. That is not going to happen and I promise you that.'

' Mrs Meena, I am the least bit worried about money right for I am more concerned about my hospital's reputation that might get tarnished from the fallout of this case. Please, send someone as quickly as possible for I am not cut out to deal with cops and their hidden agendas.'

' Stop worry and let me handle it. I might be in Delhi but all I need is to make a few calls and it will be taken care of.'

But that was easier said than done for the first two people she called and who she thought was capable enough to handle the police department as she herself would have were not in Chennai. One was away in Madurai and the other in Kerala on work.

So, she called him, her mentor, guide and a person who she had always looked up to and admired not only for his skills as an advocate but for the kind, gentle and honest person he was.

His personal secretary answered on the second ring, ' Rangachari and associates. How can I help you?'

' Jennifer, this is Deepika Mathur. Please, I need to speak to the boss right now.'

' Good afternoon Mrs Mathur. One moment please' and with that Jennifer, personal secretary to Mr Krishnaswamy Iyer connected her to the man himself who sat in his den poring over files that concerned tax and evasions.

Mr Krishnaswamy Iyer answered as always in his unique and inimitable style, ' Krishnaswamy Iyer speaking. Sollungo.'

' Big boss, this is Deepika.'

' Obviously child. For you are the only person in this world who calls me that and who refuses to stop calling me that to this day and after having left my company so many years ago.'

Clearing his throat, he came straight to the point, ' I thought all of you were in Delhi for that final hearing and Judgement at the Supreme court.'

' You are right, boss. We are all here but a small problem has cropped there in Chennai.'

She quickly explained what the situation was and Krishnaswamy listened to every word, carefully and with full attention.

Then after finishing the call he picked up his mobile phone and dialled the one man best suited for this kind of situations.

Vaanathai Pola 298

While things were unfolding in Global hospitals, Raman along with Major Param had reached the Army's OTA ( officers training academy) right next to the Airport.

During world war two, seven training academy's were started in India between 1942 to 1945 and all of them were later shut down after the war. But, then the Indo-china war happened in 1962 and the need for officers on the battlefield led to two new academies being opened one in Pune and the other in Chennai.

The Chennai school was inaugurated on 15 January 1963, for the nation by and with Brigadier Ram Singh as its first Commandant. The Pune school had a short run and was closed in 1964. However, the school in Chennai continued to operate and on 2 February 1965, it obtained the sanction to shift focus to train officers for the Short Service Regular Commission.

Only, The National Defence Academy (NDA) in Maharashtra and The Indian Military Academy (IMA) in Dehradun can say that they are older and much larger than the OTA ( officers training academy) situated in Chennai.

Their Army car entered the Academy without any fuss and stopped outside a large building and the armed commandos who stood guard at the entrance of the building and saluted both Raman and Param and opened the door for them by tapping on a keypad.

Major Param looked at Raman and smiled, ' So, this is the place from where you tracked down those two killers " Gulab and Jamun."

' Things, events always get exaggerated and blown out of proportion, Major and I will repeat it again and again. It is We as a team and not I that managed to hunt and take down those two killers.'

No sooner had he said those prophetic words, four youngsters walked, ran towards them and all of them greeted Raman with great respect and love.

Raman looked at all four of them and told Major Param, ' This was the core of my team that helped track down Gulab and Jamun and who will not help us to find out what happened to Brigadier Prakash Malhotra and the car that picked him up.'

He swept his right hand across the four youngsters and said, ' Major Param, meet Shaji, Balbir, Sukhi Ram and Preetha. Four of the brightest minds in our country.'

Then he looked at all four of them and Introduced Major Param, ' people, meet Major Param from Chakravyuh in the flesh.'

All four gasped in surprise and looked at each other for the organization Chakravyuh was supposed to be a myth, a false legend that had been created to sow confusion and fear among India's neighbours who only have hatred for the ancient land. ( Take your pick)

Preetha, the boldest one of them and the only woman in the group looked at Major Param and asked, ' Is he here?'

' here, meaning who Miss Preetha?'

' Him, your boss. Rudran.'

Major Param's eyes nearly popped out of its sockets, ' How did you come by that information?'

Preetha shrugged her petite shoulders and said, ' Sir, our work here is not meant just for RAW but for also other secret organisations. So, it just happens that stuff gets passed through our desks and we cannot help notice them.'

Raman smiled and told Param, ' Major, everyone who works here has been personally vetted by my boss, V.K.Singh and you know his ways better than mine. So, relax for you are among friends and allies.'

Major Param nodded, ' Raman Sir, Chakravyuh works for a specific purpose and always in the dark.'

Preetha smiled, ' Major Saab, in today's world there is no escaping from hackers and spies. All we can do is beat them at their own game by getting better than them and keeping ahead of them at all times which sometimes can be nerve-wracking.'

Raman's mobile phone rang and he saw it was his boss Krishnaswamy who was calling him and he answered it immediately.

' Good afternoon sir.'

' Ram, welcome back to Chennai and congratulations, son.'

Raman looked at Major Param and the others and went back to the call and requested, ' sir, is it okay if I call you back in a couple of minutes for I am in the midst of an important matter.'

' Sure Raman but please as quickly as possible for I need your advice on something very critical.'

' okay, sir.'

Raman ended the call and immediately jumped straight into the case on hand.

He looked at all four members of his team, ' People. A very important man has gone missing and it is nearly two days since he stepped out of his house and got into a car and vanished into thin air.'

He quickly walked towards a white markerboard and using a blue marker pen made a dot in the centre and looked at his young team.

' That is the missing man' and then he drew circles around the dot and continued, ' each circle from the dot is the CCTV footage from the traffic and police department.'

His voice turned serious when he said, ' Apparently, all the cameras in that particular area mysteriously stopped working around the time the man went missing.'

Raman went back to the markerboard and tapping it, ' This is how we will have to do this. Start by viewing all the traffic footage around the defence colony and expand it by a km or so and keep a close on any suspicious-looking vehicles or persons. If you find any information, immediately pursue that lead and go after it no matter what.'

Pausing in mid-sentence, he turned and glanced at Major Param who nodded, ' no matter what and you will have access to all that you might need to do the job. Just, please get it done for this man is a very important person and is vital to our nation's defence plans.'

' Major, I need to talk to my boss so, just give me a few minutes and I will be right back.'

' But, Raman, you are not a civilian anymore and you now work for Raw, which is your real boss now.'

Raman smiled, ' my boss was, is and always will be Mr Krishnaswamy and I am sorry if you are not aware of a fact and which is I work for RAW as a legal consultant and that is all. My contract does not stipulate anywhere that I cannot take on civil duties.'
