Meeting boys: Not ok! Sleeping with a complete stranger your parents select: Perfectly fine! This is pretty much how many young Indians define arranged marriages.
I don't know about your heads and senses but mine is spinning and i am actually climbing the wall in fear and panic attack. But i guess things have changed in arranged marriages and boys and girls do meet up and chat and many are even allowed to go out on dates although in most cases it is only so after the engagement has been announced to the whole world.
Shreelekha was the only daughter of COL.Shankar and he died just a week after the talks about shree's wedding began. He died in an Helicopter crash and that was all the information that was given out apart from being awarded many bravery medals adding to his already huge collection.Shree's mother Poornima whom dad and daughter affectionately called " Pooranam" was a quiet and docile creature and her whole world depended on her husband who loved her dearly.
But an army man is an army man and he does not become someone else once he comes home and gets out of the uniform and col.shankar was a career army man and his dad had been one,his grand father had been one and it stretched back to many generations and all had served the country in one way or another.
More than anyone else in his family.Col.shankar was made or rather created for the sole purpose of serving the army and his dad recognised these signs even when he was just two years old for shankar did not walk but marched whispering " Left, left, left, right left" and always saluted his dad the moment his baby eyes fell on him.
If shankar had been disappointed with the news that his wife had delivered a girl child instead of a baby boy,he had never in his entire life revealed that disappointment either to his wife or his child and gave them the best of his love.
The first fifteen year of the three had been spent in bases all over India and then Col.Shankar had been posted in chennai and they remained there for the next ten years in the Avadi army quarters and then shifted to defence colony near Porur. It was from here that shree began to go to college and got her job with TCS.
The interview had been conducted by a panel of seven members, four women and three men and as far as they were concerned, they had known that they had a winner on their hands with the appointment of shreelekha.
Shree had walked in,rather marched in,straight posture, direct eye contact without even a single shift or blink and her movements when asked to be seated were precise and very economical as were her words which were carefully chosen and correctly put.She looked at each of them and looked only at the person who was questioning her and the bonus, the cherry topping was her brilliant scores in theory and practicals.
Any big company worth its salt is always looking for that rare leadership qualities that will take their company higher and make more money in the process and they are always willing to go far in investing in such a prospect and all seven members knew instantly that shree endra shreelekha was just that,an investment for the company.
See,workers can be found in thousands and lakhs but finding leaders, able administrators is truly difficult and the current state of Tamilnadu politics is a very good example. The moment the unthinkable happened, the event that all the citizens were dreading happened and that was the passing of J.Jayalalitha, the party and the govt was shaken to its foundations and is being felt even to this day after nearly 15 months.
OPS came and was kicked out and EPS came and there was a free for all in the state assembly and then EPS kicked sasikala out along with TTV and OPS came back and they have been running the govt and hanging on by the skin of their teeth and all the while the whole world watches on,wondering " Oh god,how much longer before we face elections."
So a leader, leaders is a very valuable thing and the interview panel recognised this and passed on their observations to the higher ups and shree entered TCS Tata Consultancy Services armed with a three month probation contract that paid her 25,000 a month and rather than wonder why she was only handed out a puny contract and salary, she dived in and went to work and the rest was history.
Three months later, she was promoted to Project manager and well now she was well on her way to becoming a vice president and only the sky was the limit.
Shree was 26 years old when the talks of marriage began and one evening her dad had in a a foreboding tone spoken to her ' shree,me and mum have something to talk to you.Come down to the living room after you finish freshening up and please don't go sitting before the computer and sink into your work.'
Shree knew what they wanted to talk to her about and having never gone against her dads word or wishes, she had nodded and had joined them an hour later.
Typical of an army man,Col.shankar was nursing a rum and coke and he stood up as shree came and hugged him and gave him a peck on his cheek and then she doing the same to her mum,sat down and looked at both of them.
Col.shankar looked at her ' Sweetheart, you are my girl and so i know that you know exactly what the topic is that is before us.So,if you have any thoughts then now is the time to share it with us.'
Shree thought for a second and shook her head and looking at both of them ' no guys,i have nothing to say but i am all ears to lsiten to what you have to say and maybe then i will probably think of something.'
Poornima looked at her daughter ' shreema, you are going to be 28 years old in a few months and we both think it is time for you to think of marriage.'
Col.shankar looked at shree ' Baby, you are a grown up woman and you are one of the most intelligent woman i have had the privilege and pleasure of knowing and so i don't think me and your mum have to do or say much to convince you about marriage.'
Shreelekha stared at her palms and suddenly she asked herself ' i am nearly 28 and why am i single? why is that no boy has ever looked at me in a romantic way or tried to ask me out on a date?'
Col.shankar chuckled ' shree baby, your whispers are pretty loud and we both heard it?'
Shree smiled ' dad,i am sorry but this sudden talk of marriage has kind of thrown up lot of questions about myself and i just realised that i am nothing but your alter ego and truly a female version of col.shankar.'
He looked at her ' right, but is that a bad thing sweetheart. No,honestly,is that a bad thing for you to be like me.For in truth, all children are but a part of their parents and in the end imbibe everything from their family, good or bad.'
Shree shook her head ' no dad, there is absolutely nothing wrong or bad about me being like you and i think i am because of you and mum.'
She fell silent and then recollecting what one of her seniors had confided in her,she looked at her father ' dad,two years after i joined my company TCS,i happened to meet one of the panel members who had interviewed me and he told me ' In all my experience,i had never met any candidate more deserving than you and i wish you the very best miss.shreelekha.I am sure that your parents will be really proud of you and please never forget their contribution to you and who you are for it is they who gave it all to you and you are a part of them.'
Col.shankar looked at her and then gently placed his empty glass tumbler on the small table next to him and opened his arms and shreelekha ran into them and father placed many tender kisses on her head ' thank you my child, thank you.I feel more pride than that moment when i stood before the president while he pinned all those bravery medals on to my chest.'
Shreelekha sat on the carpet near her dad and mother's knees and Col.shankar looked at her ' my brave, brave girl. All this credit and thanks should really go to your wonderful and beautiful mother who runs the house and runs both of us quietly and without asking for anything in return but our well being.'
Dad and daughter hugged the woman of their life and shree looked at both of them and then tentatively mumbled ' excuse me,can you fix me a drink too for i feel like getting drunk.'
Poornima looked at her husband and shankar nodded ' okay women, three drinks coming up from the bar.'
A few minutes later, all three sat nursing their drinks and the topic of marriage was opened for discussion.
