Awards are biased...but sad Vishal is not nominated. Ya Lakshmi Rai in Mankatha had very few scenes...Surya was not bad in 7am Arivu though at times it looked like he was desperate to act younger.

Vikram's movie was good but not sure if he will get best actor as the film is a remake of I Am Sam.

Congrats to singer Shreya Goshal for winning 3 awards...she truly rocks!

Congrats to all the winners...some truly deserve their awards while others I was like how did they get an award for that movie...not going to mention names...don't want any bashing here.

Thanks Sweety for posting the winners.

THE NIGHT OF THE BLACK LADY

The 59th Idea Filmfare Awards 2011 (South) was a glitzy affair that had the best of the Southern film industry in attendance

Christina Francis

She's black. She is beautiful. She is 59! And she was the lady whom everyone wanted to woo at the 59th Idea Filmfare Awards 2011 (South) held in Chennai on Saturday. The star-studded awards ceremony that brought together the best of Telugu, Tamil, Malayalam and Kannada film industries, saw everyone gush about how no actor is complete unless he/she takes home a Filmfare Award.
Going by that sentiment, team "Dookudu" seemed to be the happiest of the lot, what with the film sweeping as many as six awards across categories. Mahesh Babu, who patiently sat through the entire show, was jubilant when Deepika Padukone called out his name. Running up onto the stage even as the audience went into a tizzy applauding him, Mahesh, who seemed to be glad to finally take his third Black Lady home, quipped, "The reason why the Best Actor award is announced in the end is because they don't want people to leave… that's what Dhanush just told me…" Calling Filmfare "the most special of awards", Mahesh added, "It's always prestigious to win a Filmfare, but this one is all the more special because it's coming to me after a six-year wait."
Nayanthara, who won the best actor (female) for her role in "Sri Ramarajyam", said, "I've been receiving praise for playing Sita in the film, and I'm glad this role has fetched me my first ever Filmfare as well. I dedicate this award to Balakrishna sir, who convinced me that I could pull off this role. I also dedicate it to director Bapu sir, a veteran from whom I learnt a lot..."
Taking the oomph quotient of the evening one notch higher were performances by the glamourous ladies of tinseltown. While Tamannaah paid tribute to Prabhu Dheva with a medley of his hits, it was Shruti Haasan who rocked the show with her quirky "Gabbar Singh" jig. Priyamani, Richa Gangopadhyay and Sanjjanaa also kept the tempo of the evening rather high.
The title sponsor of the 59th Idea Filmfare Awards (South) is Idea, associate sponsors are Vijay Shanthi and C Krishniah Chetty & Sons. The telecast partners are Vijay TV, Maa TV, Suvarna TV and Asianet. Radio partner is Radio Mirchi. Other partners include Black Dog, hospitality partner Hyatt Regency, fashion partner Reliance Trends, multiplex partner Khushi Advertising, trophy partner The Award Gallery, event consultants were Oxygen Entertainment and event management was by Percept.

WHAT WERE THEY THINKING?

RED CARPET STYLE FILE

Sarah Salvadore

The 59th Idea Filmfare Awards 2011 (South) red carpet threw up a lot of hits and misses. While some of our stars came up tops, other failed to live up to the pressure. Here are the fashion highlights and lowlights of the night.

KAJAL AGGARWAL
Not known to make radical choices on the red carpet, one would have at least expected something different from Kajal Aggarwal. The design of the outfit is commonplace and lackluster to say the least. The drape and colour spell boring. Add to it, Kajal totally ruins the lace look with a neckpiece that does not belong there in the first place. Wish she had ditched that and stuck to wearing just the earrings.

TAMANNAAH
The current darling of Telugu cinema usually makes heads turn. But her appearance on the red carpet grabbed attention for all the wrong reasons. Yes peplums are hot this season, but with the actor's outfit — the colour, structure and fabric put together — spelled disaster. The side stitch was messy and the outfit is absolutely unflattering on Tamannaah. The call was to walk the red carpet, not saunter into an alien space station.

RICHA
GANGOPADHYAY
Everything seems to be wrong with Richa's look. The dress, with lashings of sequins flirtatiously enveloping her frame is unflattering. The necklace and silver clutch are tacky. Overall, the less said about the actor, the better. Richa needs to hire a stylist, pronto.

LAKSHMI MANCHU
The biggest d i s a p p o i n t - ment of the evening was style diva L a k s h m i Manchu. The actor's look was completely over the top. The colour of the sari was jarring and the long blouse did nothing to the entire outfit. The diamante cuff bracelet was too blingy to say the least. But what baffles us most is the hair band. Why wear a diamante hair band with a sari, Lakshmi? The hair and make-up was too loud. Heartbreak.

TRISHA
What was Trisha thinking before leaving home for the awards ceremony? No Trisha, you weren't going for a Karaoke night with your gal pals. The dress, handbag, hair and make-up were not befitting for an important awards night. The length of the outfit too was absolutely unflattering.

PRIYAMANI
The colour, texture and design of Priyamani's gown is so yesterday. Of course, matching the watch and earrings with the design motifs on the dress is not exactly stylish. And what's with using net to hold your hair in place? Tacky. Neck up, the actress fared better.

DIVYA SPANDANA
One of the best dressed actors of the evening, Divya chose her look to perfection. The fabric, print and colour complimented her. The one shoulder dress highlighted the actor's best features. Kohl-lined eyes, minimal make-up, hair tied in a pony, no jewellery and a knot clutch ensured that actor exuded class on the red carpet. She's nothing but an impeccable hit.

NAYANTHARA
The lady is back with a bang! Apart from bagging the best actor (female) award, Nayanthara looked smashing in her stylish new avatar. The outfit, the hair, the make-up and jewellery spelled g o r g e o u s n e s s . However, wish the actor had lost the nose ring for this look. But otherwise, Nayan is a picture of perfection.

AMY JACKSON
The Brit Barbie had her wow moment on the red carpet. The net sari has a slight vintage look to it, while the black blouse with zardozi work sits pretty on her. With earrings being the only jewellery and make-up kept fresh, Amy oozed glamour and hers was the dreamiest look of the night.

PROUD MOMENTS

AN AWARDING DEBUT
Nothing can give a young actor a bigger confidence boost than the elusive Black Lady, who remains on the wishlist of even the most seasoned actors. So, when you win a Filmfare Award for your very first film, the feeling is even more special. The Filmfare Best Debut awards, both male and female, went to actors Aadi
and Shruti Haasan for their roles in Telugu films. While Aadi won the award for "Prema Kavali", Shruti won the award for her work in both "Anaganaga O Dheerudu" in Telugu and "7Aum Arivu" in Tamil.
Receiving the award from her legendary father Kamal Haasan made the night all the more special for her, said Shruti. "I practised my speech in front of the mirror many times over, but now when the moment has come, I am speechless. Thank you appa for giving me this award..." she said. "I've received the Black Lady earlier, but that was on behalf of my father. Now, I'm thrilled to have one of my own; it's a heady feeling. And the best part was, I got to receive it from my dad. This made the evening more special to me. I feel energised and motivated. Apart from having my dad with me on such an important occasion, I was glad my best friends from school and college could be present to share my happiness. The award will proudly rest on my shelf for a long time," added Shruti.
ADI'S DREAM
COME TRUE
It was a great moment for young actor Aadi who called his award an old dream come true. "I always wanted to win this award, now that I have achieved this dream, I have a new one - to win the best actor's award. Hopefully, that too will happen soon." The evening was all the more special for Aadi's family as they took home two awards. While Aadi himself won the award for Best Debut male, his uncle Ravishankar, who's best known as the dubbing artiste in "Arundhati" for Sonu Sood, won the Best Supporting Actor award for Kannada. Aadi's dad, actor Saikumar, too was present as the family rejoiced the wins right through the after party.

SHREYA'S MUSICAL HATTRICK!
In a rare feat, Shreya Ghoshal achieved the unusual when she won not one, not two, but three Filmfare Awards in the Best Playback Singer (female) category. The singer who surpassed competition in Telugu, Kannada and Malayalam, confessed that that is a first for her, and will always remain as something she will cherish all her life. U n fo r t u n at e ly though, Shreya couldn't be present at the awards show, but she sent across a message, in which she thanked all her mentors who made it possible. Talking about the soothing number "Jagadhanandha" from "Sri Ramarajyam", which won her the award in Telugu, Shreya said, "Thank you Ilayarajaji... You've always showed me the way. This is a very special day for me as this has never happened before. I hope, I deliver better songs to my audiences and continue to win their hearts." Incidentally, Jonnavithula Ramalingeswara Rao also won the best lyricist for "Jagadhanandha". Shreya's rendition of "Gaganave" from "Sanju Weds Geetha" won her the award in Kannada, and in Malayalam she won it for "Paatil ee Paatil" from "Pranayam".
