Preeto ff-woh saat din-Part 11- Day 6

"I am so sorry Preeto. Maine itne busy time pe tumhe disturb kiya." "Are nahi Simmi ji. Kaam to kam hota hain. isme samay nahi dekhte." Preeto handed simran the dresses she had designed for some of Simran's clients who wanted typical Punjabi wedding attire. All of them then proceeded towards the car as tonight they had to stay over in the Dhillon house to attend the early morning wedding at the Gurudwara. Raj drove an exceptionally deep in thought Preeto, home. As she went around the endless pile of pre wedding jobs, she kept reminding herself that...life had a way of operating and Babaji had a mysterious way of working... sometimes things did change without a moment's warning. But all said and done...it was still hard to imagine how things had evolved from "always" to "never" in what seemed like a single dramatic heartbeat. Years later, after running into Rajbeer unexpectedly, the realization had hit her like a brick wall. The pain was still there...almost as painful as the night of goodbye.

"Beta ab to aap bhi shaadi kar lo. Kyu kanwal ji? preeto ke liye bhi hain koi nazar mein?" Preeto was fed up of this discussion, which seemed to be the question everybody wanted to ask. Yes, enough time had passed to con her into thinking that she had begun to heal, and she might probably have, but then... suddenly those old familiar aches were beginning to hurt her all over again. "maine kaha na aap logo ko, MUJHE NAHI KARNI SHAADI" Preeto had never been so loud to anybody at home. But she couldn't take this at all now. Everything was finally beginning to mend, however dramatically, the moment she had locked eyes with the one she had once shared so many dreams with, all hell had broken loose in her life. Half of her ached for things to be the way they once were, while the other half longed to forget the whole thing ever happened. She just couldn't stop thinking "things will never be the way they used to be" and that was hurting the most.

All at once the house was plunged into darkness, literally, without a single pinprick of light. Preeto couldn't see a thing. Alone in her room, she couldn't even make out her hand raised up to her tear streaked face.

The dark is generous.

Its first gift is concealment: our true faces lie in the dark beneath our skins, our true hearts remain shadowed deeper still. But the greatest concealment lies not in protecting our secret truths, but in hiding from us the truths of others.

"Tum theek ho Preeto?" His low melodious voice sounded off in the darkness of the room as she lifted her eyes and allowed herself to look around for the source of the voice. Preeto saw rajbeer flicking the matchstick. She breathed a silent sigh of relief. The lone candle, in the corner of the room seemed to be struggling to fight off the darkness that was surrounding it with great, wide jaws. There was just enough light to draw the outlines of the room, and she could feel the dim wash of it on her face.

"Maine suna tumne neeche kya kaha." Rajbeer crossed the room in a few long strides and now stood in front of the window, facing her, just a black silhouette: tall, broad shoulders tapering down to his hips. Even in the dark light, she could see his beautiful face. His bright eyes didn't seem to be affected by the dim light, but rather, they seem to have intensified. Once again, like in the days of old, Preeto found herself mystified by his eyes. They bore inside of her and caused the feeling to finally engulf her weak form. The intensity of it was almost too much to bear. It clawed at her insides, forcing its way from the pit of her belly upward to swallow her heart. "Itni dosti to hain na Preeto ki main tumhare mana karne ki wajah jaan sakta hu?" Preeto stood rooted to her spot dumbfounded, as if she had been hit by a blunt object, overcome by the chilling realization of her utter helplessness. She held her breath as he approached closer. The fear, the anticipation, the desire, they were all mashed together until every nerve of her body was sparking.

"maine abhi es bare mein socha nahi" Her hands balled tighter into a fist and her fingernails bit into her skin. She couldn't take anymore. His eyes'they were torturing her. "Jhoot" Despite the authority in his tone, his voice was smooth and soothing. It awakened feelings deep within her. Preeto shook her head. "He was wrong." Nonchalantly, he rested his hands upon the cupboard on either side of her face, effectively barricading her within his boundary. She tried to shut him away. "Tumhe aaj bhi mera intezaar hain" Desperately, she clutched her chest with her right hand as her voice choked out "nahi". The pain of the lie tore through her like a sharp knife, but she dared not wince. She was so frustrated. No matter what she did, he'd never leave, till he got his answer. He would just wait for her. Preeto looked up at him pleading for him to say something'anything. "Aaj bhi tumhara dil mera hi naam pukarta hain."

The dark's patience is infinite.

Eventually, even stars burn out.

The dark always wins because it is everywhere.

A bitter avalanche of icy memories plowed into her chest at breakneck speed, stealing the very breath from her lungs. She gasped for air, but there was really no use fighting it; the blow had been instantaneous and overpowering. "He will get the truth out of you today Preeto." Her eyes again landed on him, but her heart immediately stopped dead, when she saw his free hand withdrawing from the contact of the wall behind her and drawing close to her face. Her knees started to go weak and she internally panicked. Preeto forced herself to turn around. She looked into the mirror, and found Rajbeer's dreamy eyes looking back at her with the help of the lone candle in his hand. "Tumhari aankho mein mera pyaar saaf nazar aata hain." A myriad of emotions swirled through her head and the familiar mixed scent of perfume and cologne made it even more impossible for her to know how to act. They both knew where their identities lay...who ultimately claims their hearts and where their fortresses are'.. and those things are truly what mattered the most, but this stolen moment was still so endearing that neither wanted to let go easily.

The dark protects us from what we dare not know.

Its second gift is comforting illusion: the ease of gentle dreams in night's embrace, the beauty that imagination brings to what would repel in day's harsh light. But the greatest of its comforts is the illusion that the dark is temporary: that every night brings a new day.

A rogue gust of wind suddenly entered, blowing away the flickering flame, leaving them in complete darkness. "Rajbeer?" His name felt queer on her lips and Preeto allowed her hand to lightly touch the lips that had finally uttered his name. But he was still there. He had never let her go. Slowly, his hands moved up her arms, leaving but the slightest tingle of touch marked upon her. Before she knew it, his head had moved up to her right shoulder and his lips pressed against them, firmly but gently. Her surprise was evident from the sharp intake of breath, and he knew exactly what effect he had on her. "Tumhari saanson ki Khushboo mein bhi sirf meri hi mehak hain."

"Absence diminishes small loves and increases great ones,

as the wind blows out the candle and blow up the bonfire."

Before Preeto could react, rajbeer had spun her around and stared directly into her eyes. The intensity of his gaze forced her to take a step back, but her attempt was futile as she hit the cupboard door hard. She had no notice of his actions - simply entranced by his eyes that were showing a different colour from usual. She had never seen him in such an avatar before - his eyes hinted at possessiveness with a semblance of being calm and collected. His normally caring features had been replaced by those of a man with a purpose, somebody who wanted something from her and knew exactly how to get it. "kaho na Preeto. Tumhe bhula dene ka jo waada tumne mujhse maanga tha...aaj saat saal baad bhi kya...tum use nibha pa rahi ho?"

Preeto wasn't scared as much as she was infatuated with his new persona. She felt an emotional turmoil within her, confused as she knew him through and through and yet, why she felt as though he carried an aura of mysteriousness. She felt challenged by his stance and a greater desire to accept that challenge. His face moved closer, barely inches away from hers."Wafa Ki Rang Mein rangaa...Ghayaal Woh Pyaar...Aaj Bhi Hain" A flush spread on her cheeks and throat, and her breathing grew slightly husky. The way he looked at her made her heart thump loudly. Rajbeer reached up and brushed his fingertips along her jaw line. His touch made her shiver pleasantly. It weakened her. Sudden spirals of heat coursed through her as he held her face in the cup of both his palms. The room began to tilt and her head swam. His gaze moved over her face and hair, as if he had never seen her before. "janti ho Preeto...Jab bhi tumse mulakat ka koi mauka aata, mujhe bus apne pairo me tumhari kasam ki zanjeer nazar aa jati." Rajbeer moved his hand to her hair, smoothing his palm over it, and fingering the top portion of her braid. His hand came to rest on her hair, cradling her head gently. His eyelids hooded his eyes, which had grown dusky. "Tumhari yaad mein nikle har aansoo mein bhi bus tumhari hi tasveer dikhti thi." She was barely able to speak, the way her heart thrashed about in her chest. He continued to gaze at her. "Don't you want someone in your life?" The question stunned her into silence, and she looked at Rajbeer, whose hand rested on her hair. She was melting under his gaze. She realized, with a lurch of her heart, that they were discussing '. being together. Her eyes watered and immediately she felt his lips drying away the wetness of her eyes. His lips warm on hers had sent a flush of pleasant heat tingling in her soul. She loved the sensation, it made her feel heady. The tenderness in his gaze so contrasted with the baleful glare he had given her all these days. It sent flutters through her stomach and heart.

The third gift of the dark is the light itself: as days are defined by the nights that divide them, as stars are defined by the infinite black through which they wheel, the dark embraces the light, and brings it forth from the centre of its own self.

With each victory of the light, it is the dark that wins.

The room shone back into its previous state of light and Preeto suppressed a gasp as the reality slapped her hard. Rajbeer was the only man who'd ever held her in his arms and told her she was lovely. He awakened the hunger that had slumbered inside her since she'd realized her love for the person who was kind, compassionate, handsome, and whose eyes always found her lovely. "He isn't yours to claim anymore" a small voice inside her head said. Rajbeer removed his hand from her hair and leaned against the cupboard, his palm resting on the surface. "Don't you want to love again?" He moved in closer, so close she could feel the heat of his body. Preeto caught her breath softly. Her heart pumped madly and she could hear her blood rush in her ears. "Don't you want to hold my hand again?" Her vision blurred as she felt drunk. "Doesn't my slightest touch take your breath away and make you go weak." His breathing had gone ragged as his lips hovered inches above her face. Shock overtook her, and her face began to heat up with a blush. Her jaw clenched so tight, an audible snap could be heard in the room. "I know you want me so much." He leaned his face to hers and pressed his lips into her cheek. Her eyes fluttered close at the sweet, sensual warmth that radiated into her skin. With his fingertips, he caressed her other cheek.

It is the dark that seeds cruelty into justice,

that drips contempt into compassion,

that poisons love with grains of doubt.

"Yes".... Preeto sounded out...feeble but clear. Rajbeer rested his lips on her skin for several heartbeats before lifting his face away and gazing into her eyes. He looked momentarily startled."I will love again... someone" Something strange flashed in his eyes, something that appeared to be sadness. Her mind and heart were in knots. An inner battle between the feelings that threatened to take over her mind, left her torn. The moment of truth was finally here. Slowly, as he turned to look her in the eyes, a dangerous glare filled his countenance as his brightly colored eyes slowly turned dark. Stunned, Preeto stumbled away before she quickly regained her composure and turned around. Her heart hammering away inside her chest. Her voice was weak, barely above a whisper. "Main shaadi karne ke liye tayar hu."Suddenly, she felt warmth envelop her. She could barely breathe. The world seemed to spin in a sickening pace while Preeto tried to stand still. She felt crushed under the burden of her declaration. The revolt of her heart within her reached a fever pitch, and Preeto felt as if she was about to burst into flames. Rajbeer was right next to her ears as he whispered, "Main biji ko keh deta hu larka dekhne ke liye." His breath caressed her face and caused her heart to take, what seemed like, a long pause before regaining its rhythm. Rajbeer moved in front of her. His eyes stared into hers. The darkness in them penetrated her to her core. "If I don't look away'and quickly; I fear I may burst." It took everything in her to break his mesmerizing gaze. She heard his feet make its way out...out of her life. Their story was over, and eternity stretched before her.

The brightest light casts the darkest shadow.

but in the heart of dark's strength lies weakness:

one lone candle is enough to hold it back.

Preeto ff-woh saat din-Part 12 - Day 7

The house lit up in various hues and shades. The guests had returned from the anantkara in the gurudwara and since Baani's in laws had wanted a proper Hindu wedding ritual, everybody geared up for the gala evening. Biji-bauji had more reasons to celebrate. Preeto had finally agreed for marriage and their happiness was infectious. But Preeto had caught the melancholy of Rajbeer. He was now packing to leave immediately after the wedding. Time sped with the speed of light and preeto's heartbeats missed their pace when Baani got up for the sacred marriage vows around the holy fire. She slowly slipped past the assembled and crept upstairs to Rajbeer's room. The scene she met, made her traverse all ranges of feelings and emotions, and somehow pulled her in towards Rajbeer, who stood in the centre of the room. A face of pure beauty peeped from all around him. Preeto felt rajbeer's desperation, grief and overwhelming love as he prepared to burn all the sketches he had made of her.

"This is the end Preeto" A wry, heartbroken expression that twisted her gut, spread on his face."I love you, Preeto." he said seriously, his voice laced with desperation and a tinge of fear. She held her breath and let his voice bore into her, horrified, not just at his words but at the tone in which he said them. It took her some four seconds to realize that he still remained unaware of her physical presence. But it took some more moments before he became aware of her.Preeto had let out a sudden sharp breath as flames licked hungrily the papers strewn in the room. His eyes reflected the bright fire burning his heart's desire. The house resounded with the holy chants of matrimony, but couldn't drown out the wails of their dying love. The two waiting, longing, aching Hearts continued to burn brighter in the darkness of the night.

"Soon this house will witness your marriage Preeto" he walked towards her. The very thought of it was burning his soul somewhere inside. "A union of spirit and soul will take place as the unbreakable vows are chanted." Preeto was too shocked to speak. Her face wrenched itself into a horrified stare as rajbeer's words threatened to take shape in her mind's eye. Another moment of it, and she would lose all the positivity and sense of life. He took her hands in his and clutched them near his heart. "May your marriage be full of laughter...May every day be a day in paradise and may it be sealed by happiness...here and hereafter." Rajbeer's heart was burning with love. All he could see was the flame as he held her hands and walked her towards it. Preeto's heart pulsed with passion like waves on an ocean as she followed him.

"Our love has become firm by your walking together with me. Together we commit that we will share all responsibilities" an unmistakable quiver in his voice as they walked around the blazing light. Their divine love, beckoned them to a world beyond, where only lovers can see with their eyes of fiery passion. Rising away from all the worries, grave thoughts and questions...she felt herself being taken to that distant land of promise.

"Now you have walked with me the second step of Mutual love and trust." As the flames danced in both their midst, Preeto lost all senses in the world of love. Her senses had left the familiar for a while & stretched out to a welcomed season. "I will love you and you alone as my wife and fill your heart with strength and courage." As she heard Rajbeer saying out those words to her...For just dose moments she wished to trade her identity with someone else...Someone who had not given away her love for the sake of her family responsibilities... ...someone who didn't have to see the love of her life lighting up someone else's heart. She wanted to change herself into someone with the destiny to be his life partner.

"I pledge to Share your sorrows and joys." They had lived the life of falling stars in the sunlit sky, fulfilling d wish of other's hearts but whose fall went unnoticed by them who wished on their fallen destiny. "My devotion to you is pure and you are my joy." Not a single soul witnessed d sublime beauty as they held hands and burned into a sacred existence that defies & surpasses every description of ecstasy And love. She closed her eyes and let herself flow with her desires, unfastening the bindings of her feet.

"We shall love and respect each other's respective families." Preeto's eyes fluttered open, and as she saw him, somewhere she knew she had to stop it. But the desperation, helplessness, concern that looked out from his eyes was not of a mere lover...it was the kind of madness that you see only when someone is truly in love. "I promise you that I shall always be with you." and then for the first time that night, she responded to his pleas. She took a step forwards and answered all his questions:he was the only thing keeping her tied to this life. And finally, he understood. He had never been alone ever - she was always there. With the saddest smile, he took her hand as a vow to never let her walk alone again.

"In the fifth holy round around the fire, I ask for a peaceful long life with you. May I fill your heart with great joy and peace, time and time again." As she walked behind him, she thought about him, his sweet laughter, how his eyes twinkled when she smiled. She was in his every thought. And when a lone tear escaped her eye questions plagued her mind. Upon seeing their entangled hands, just like their lives were entangled with each other, even more painful memories came back. She had opened up her heart and let him feel what she had been avoiding all this time, making her question her own actions. With that tears rolled down jerking her apart.

"The sixth phera is for bountiful seasons and I pray that we may go through these seasons together." Even before she could understand her own state of mind, fate sends the answer: You two are made for each other. And that point realization hit her hard. No! Her mind screamed that she can't let that happen. As her heart and mind battled it out, she whispered his name. For a flicker of a second, rajbeer stopped to turn and look at her, but as she breathed his name, he knew what he had to do. He didn't hesitate and looking at her he said, "I promise that I will always be with you." Her guards down; she surrendered herself to him, to her love, to her life. In that moment it wasn't Preeto and Rajbeer, no right or wrong, everything dissolved into nothingness. For that moment was only about a man and a woman who had suffered long...a man who had seen his love spring back from the valleys of memories only for him...and a woman discovering what she had been missing all along. And as they held hands, they made the silent promise of love and life, of always being there when need arises...of never leaving each other's side ever. A poignant moment symbolizing that they are meant to be.

In that instant, it was as though her heart could feel his and her mind could read his. "Kyun aap mujhse dur nahi ja sake Rajbeer?" Her heart questioned him, knowing full well the answer lay within her own heart. "Finally, let us take the seventh step and be true companions..." With Rajbeer's words, she could only confirm what she didn't want to accept: their hearts were inextricably linked to one another's. But her heart could only take her so far. "...and remain partners in a life of understanding, loyalty, unity and companionship." His voice was paving a new path towards himself, one that she could not help but travel on. She had thought that she could fill up herself with all the love she had...but right now all was drowned under the feelings he had for her. She could not look at him and not love him anymore. She had fallen too deep into his pain to bring him any more. She was hesitant at first; unsure of whether she should let herself feel for him, but then she simply walked on the last step.

"We have taken the Seven Steps. Our love has become inseparable and firm. We are word and meaning, united. You are thought and I am sound. Now you have become completely mine and I offer my total self to you. Hereafter, I cannot live without you. Do not live without me." The fire died but it set ablaze all her passions. She brushed aside her worries and escaped the prison of her ego and lost herself in the abode of his arms. For that short second she held her entire world within the confine of her arms as she hugged him close to her, he smiled a tiny bit but closed his eyes. Pulling her close to himself, he held her closely as his arms were wrapped around them. Preeto's racing heart longed to revel in the drunken frenzy of his love. The intoxication of Love so strong, that she no longer wanted to stand mute with the agony of the wishes in her heart. This felt so good to Rajbeer. His emptiness abated as her warmth filled his void. Tonight everything had changed. Or rather, dragged them away from the life they had been living.

"Rajbeer"...Simran's voice broke the spell and the enchantment lifted.
