MADDUR: A 19-year-old girl who resisted a molestation attempt by a group of youths was kicked out of a moving train by them near Maddur on Tuesday afternoon. She survived miraculously, but suffered grievous injuries.

Kavya (name changed) was pushed out of the Yeshwantpur-Mysore Express when it was travelling over the Kolli bridge, on the Shimsha river. She fell onto the dry river bed 25 feet below.

A passenger who saw the girl being thrown out called Maddur police. She was taken to the Mandya Institute of Medical Sciences, where she is being treated for injuries to the head, backbone and legs.

Scores of passengers who remained mute spectators to the molestation attempt later thrashed the culprits. Two youths were taken into custody at the Mandya station. Two others were picked up at Pandavapura later on suspicion of accompanying those caught earlier.

Kavya said from her hospital bed: "When the train was approaching Maddur station, four youths began teasing me and sexually harassing me. They passed lewd remarks and tried to molest me. When I said I would inform police, they pushed me out."

An employee of a garment factory in Bangalore, Kavya was on leave. She was heading back to her home in Vidyaranyapuram, Mysore. An orphan, she stays with her grandmother in Mysore.

Kavya boarded the general compartment at Kengeri. The four youths, who are believed to have entered the coach at Ramanagaram, began teasing her.

When Kavya rebuked them, one of the youths tried to molest her.

She got up from her seat and went near the door. The youths followed her and continued to misbehave. They pushed her out when she said she would inform police.

As the train had just left Maddur, it was moving at a slow speed on the bridge.

Police said Kavya might not have survived if she had hit a rock on the river bank. Luckily, she fell on the dry river bed.

A passenger said the youths literally kicked her out. Another passenger claimed: "If she had brought it to our notice, we could have done something."

The miscreants were identified as Akbar, 24, Imran, 21, Shuban and Ahmed — all from Kalyanagiri locality in Mysore.

Victimspeak

I am a tailor at the Hinduja Garments factory in Bangalore. I was going to my home town, Mysore. When the train was approaching Maddur station, four youths began teasing me and sexually harassing me. They passed lewd remarks and tried to molest me. When I protested and threatened that I would inform police about their misbehaviour, they pushed me out of the moving train. I fell on the rocky ground and lost consciousness. When I regained my consciousness, I was under medical care. I was in acute pain and there was blood all over my body.

TIMES VIEW

We need no gender assessment study to state that women find life outside their homes increasingly unsafe. Commuting on buses and trains is fraught with risks too, not to talk of general discomfort, thanks to overcrowding and lack of facilities. This case is more shocking because it brings to light the deteriorating social climate in Karnataka where hooligans can dare commit such heinous acts. What's worrisome for citizens is the government -- whose members are constantly squabbling over positions of power -- seems to be in no hurry to wake up to realities. Along with policy-makers, law-enforcers too have a big job on their hands in creating a citizenfriendly society.
It is shocking that the co-passengers were mute spectators until the girl was thrown out of the moving train. It is time more stringent measures are taken. At times I feel the Saudi's law of eye for an eye will help in curbing such acts.
People nowadays are so self-centric that they do not bother what is happeneing in front of them. Wonder how many would agree to be witnesses in the case and how the police would investigate.
Its alarming to notice that this is not happening in one region but consistently all over India. A few encounters by the police should atleast be a starting step to instill fear in the criminals. A couple of years back when a jilted lover and his friend threw acid on a girl the police shot the boys and claimed as encounter. This needs to be done more regularly.

Completely Disgusting , Men like those 4 should be just executed , I wouldn't even bother with arrest or a trial . Women are not public property and deserve the same amount of respect as Any other citizen. I am just horrified to see How publicly such Molestation acts are occurring and By Standers just watch the whole things go down . Seriously , I heard of the by-stander Effect but this is to an extreme ,

As a Human , regardless where i am in Life , In NY or India , I know i can't let an incident like this occur in front of my eyes. AND yes , You best believe i would fight those Pigs myself. Only if More people stand up for Women and Men would stand up and protect the Young ladies . Sighhh But I stronger recommend Women Needs to start carrying Knives , and a Mace , Or Even a Packet of Red Chilli Powder . Something to protect themselves , because from the looks of it . No one else will help if something happens.

Punishments For Eve teasing , Molestation Needs to be MORE Harass and Bail is Not an Option . ANY ACT of Violence towards women such be 5 year in Jail And Chemical castration ! The Government Needs to embed Fear in the minds of those criminals .

Chemical Or non-chemical Castration such be Imposed as a Form of Punishment for these pigs.😃

Agree with you Mia, except for one point "Women are not public property and deserve same amount of respect as any other citizen"

Are you happy with the way you have constructed that thought? Public Property - I mean heritage sites, govt. buildings, roads, railway stations, hospitals, trains, buses etc. also deserve a huge amount of respect. After all they are maintained by the taxes we pay.

Mute spectators, this best defines Indian crowd. How can anyone violate the dignity of a woman and rest just stand their in hordes doing nothing, watching it all silently.
Is being woman make us a commodity that anyone can exploit? Are we good enough to be made nation's headlines, only after we have been abused and left for pity?Dont care about those 4 bas***ds but I want to slap each one of those who stood in the crowd , watched and probably pleased themselves while watching a woman being assaulted.I fail to see why couldnt 10 people grabbed the 4 R*&*^ and threw them out of the train. This would have taught a lesson not only to them but to the crowd as well.
Banish male entry from the temples and other religious places, if they cannot respect a woman , they are not deserving enough to worship female deities.
I fear as a society we have lost the concept, there is no Indianess in standing and watching a helpless suffer.Shamed and disgraced!
Indian Polity plz for a minute put your hunger for power down, stop squandering money for an hour and observe the women around you-some are your family, others might work for you and rest you might have voted for you- they are being treated worse than living being- They need you, need strong laws and a system where they can live their life without any fear and anxiety.
GIrls enroll in self-defence classes, carry knives, paper spray and be vocal , dont let these acts deter that spirit.Bundle together and take to streets , let the country know that we angry and we demand justice.

oppsss My bad .. 😳 wrote this AM .
Let's Me try to clarify myself On what i meant ,

what i was trying to say is that For me the concept of Public Property - is a place , a building , a institution, area of land such as beaches that is Accessible and available for the general population to use , either is it a park or a beach .

- the Gov't hospitals, Postal , rails , Hospitals are not all Public Property.

Here its different cause we have state-ownership /government ownership -
Like there are the courts which are for the general population but its not accessible for the general population Uses. Like for jury Duty ( of course Only US citizens will be summoned ) - when you are summoned for Duty, U will receive a letter and without the letter you can't enter the building . So yeah its Public but government owned . Like the VA hospitals - Since i am a Nurse , I applied for employment , But my colleagues couldn't because they are not US citizens .

Our NYC transit system, Postal service and even Amtrak ( railroad ) , Is suppose to be public ownership yet it is Public- benefit corporation - basely saying its for the use of the public and but its also privately and government owned.

Okay sorry went off topic . -
And recently with the Molestation case in Ghuwati and now hearing this one. I just felt that men In India are not aware of the fact that - women are not ' public property " ( meaning accessible or available for the use of General Population ) and they should be respected as any other citizen . I didn't mean to disrespect any historical site or gov't owned rails, business , institution , if i offended anyone feelings , I am truly sorry , that was not my intention .

I am hoping i clarified myself and Not confused anyone 😳.

No dear, none of us got confused, even though you did get a bit involved in that reasoning. LOL

Yes, you are right, right now it does feel like there's a free for all where women are concerned in India.

But there's another side to it as well. There's more coverage of such incidents. The public opinion and the media is on the side of women. More women are breaking the shackles of moribund patriarchal homes and venturing out to live independent lives.

What the current state of affairs reflects is that while more and more women are becoming economically independent, are pursuing further education, venturing out in public places like pubs etc. the male fiefdoms are decreasing. No longer are colleges, work places, pubs, discos etc the sole province of men. Women are taking their share of the pie in all walks of life, and are proving that they do not need the prop of male support any longer.

The attacks on women are an indication of the frustration of weak men who are being forced to measure up and found wanting. In my reading this situation is going to continue for another 4 or 5 years with increasing incidence of violence after which there would be a turn of tide with the miscreants being controlled or routed out.

Yes You are Absolutely Right , In this modern times , Indian women are more educated and venturing off into society to excel in every field .

It is good that the Media and the general population is In full support of Women , yet the fact that these incidents happen in public In front of the same population , what happened to that support at that moment. I understand Bystander effect and some people are afraid to confront attacks but it's not an excuse. Every Indian needs to take a stand for protecting women and young ladies.

And the sad Part about American Media , the Only Highlight the tragedy of Indian Society.
So even growing up in NY , I have always been subjected to criticism , where my classmates, co-workers would ask me the Most ridiculous questions. They feel Indian women are oppressed , submissive , uneducated Housewives who are beaten and imprisoned in a backwards barbaric customs and ritualistic society. And News like these just reassures them .

So it deeply frustrates me and Angers me to see such things occurring . Another 4-5 years is not acceptable. Women needs to start carrying weapons to protect themselves, or LAWS Like -chemical castration for Sexual Offenders needs to be Imposed Like ASAP .

Saw an interview of the girl.
It seems they asked her to sleep with them and started harrassing her when she refused. She went to another bogie but they followed her and no co-passenger came to her rescue. When she saw that no-one was helping her she went ahead to another compartment. They followed her there. It was there that they pushed her out when she refused once again.
Of the four two have been caught by the passengers while the remaining two escaped.
If only the people present at the scene had the spine to intervene, the girl would not have suffered.

Hmm, I don't get it... We ask for equal rights and then we come back to say they need to have more stringent laws for harassment against women 😕 Shouldn't it be the same law whether someone misbehaves with a woman or a man?
