AAA-No one starts off thinking or planning to become alcoholics.Yes,there ARE many people who remain occasional social drinkers. But a significantly LARGER percentage do become regular drinkers and then graduate to alcoholics. The research done by AA shows that a large proportion of young drinkers or children of drinkers are GENETICALLY predisposed to becoming addicts.I have no idea of how deep or correct this research is...but they've been right in other aspects so I would tend to believe them eg they FRANKLY admit that for the ONE alcoholic they save, there are 250 that they CANNOT.They list signs of alcoholism that are quite RADICALLY different from the ones that we hear of in the non-AA world.ANYBODY who drinks at ANY level should visit AA once and attend one of the open sessions.

PS=Lest you think I'm a born again AA-ist-I've only ever attended ONE meeting-dragged there by my family to "help" me understand brother's illness-I found it incredibly informative but irrelevant to my life since I don't drink and had no wish to treat my brother with kid gloves "because he was ill".But, I ALSO came away with the conviction that even"social drinkers" need to go at least once to assess themselves. ALL addicts tend to lie to others AND themselves-for instance,if I smoke 10 cigarettes,if the Doc asks me I tend to say 6-8 and since he is an old fashioned GP,he knows exactly HOW much I am really smoking!!

But seriously, I know the problems with enablers - though not as potent as the ones in your family. The enablers in my family, fortunately, have little power since we come from a middle-class family. Risen from the ranks of clerks and babus.

Sometimes I feel that it is better to be in the bad books than be loved by Enablers. They practice what is called "Killing Love". If one is constantly ignored by such people one can at a point get away from it all, but an atmosphere that centers around enhancing only the negative traits - that is like poison hidden in honey.

It IS the past and I've gone past looking back in anger or sorrow-now there is just ABSOLUTE peace of mind. There is a tinge of pity for my mother-she is wheel chair bound AND bed ridden-but her present IS a result of the choices she made and nobody can do her penance for her.
Do NOT worry about raking up a thorny past-its been lived, its lessons learnt so its not hard to talk about it.. You concentrate on the injuries you inflicted on yourself-repairing the washing machine.

Enablers do SO MUCH damage in the name of love-it horrifies me.
