UNDER THE SKY LANTERNS - PART 17

Roli is alarmed!

Here she is all alone in the middle of nowhere with a creep on her tail! Her eyes dart around frantically for a safe exit, but there's no way out other than going past him!

What does this guy want, she wonders fearfully, obviously, he's not here to say hello.

"Psst!" he calls out!

Roli glowers at him with disgust and finds him wink at her, followed by several other annoying gestures!

Hey Matarani, what will I do? I don't think that I can fight this guy, he looks too strong. Grrr... why on earth did I come here?

The lioness in her takes over. Let it be, she thinks with a renewed sense of courage, if he comes any closer I'm going to gouge his eyes out!

She takes a deep breath and walks past him as if he didn't exist. She fights the urge to look in to his eyes.

When she reaches a good enough distance, she quickly glances over her shoulder and realizes that she is been followed!

"Hey Matarani," she whispers in utter terror and picks up her pace. I'll try to avoid a struggle as much as I can. Fighting him here is not a good idea anyway!

She hits the street leading to the hotel and walks as fast as she can. Once I'm there, I'll be safe, she thinks. I'll be closer to civilization!

She glances back and finds him still on her tail.

Just a little more to the hotel!

A voice in her head screams RUN'!!!

She breaks into a run!

She looks over her shoulder again and finds him closing in really fast! Like a desperate dog!

She gasps for air as she tears down the streets. Her muscles ache for relief! Her heart pounds beyond its limits! Her brains are about to explode! I can't keep running much longer! I'll have to fight him back!

Just then, beaming headlights from an approaching car blinds her.

"Help!!!" she cries out and waves frantically.

The car screeches to a stop and a guy steps out. It's Siddhant!

He gapes at the sight before his eyes. Was this guy after her?

Roli gasps in unbelievable horror and gratitude! She has the look of a terror-stricken deer that just escaped from its predator's jaws! She was inches away from a fierce struggle!

Terrified to have a much bigger opponent to face, her creepy pursuer turns around and begins to scamper away!

"Hey!" Siddhant races after him! "Stop there!"

Breathless and trembling, Roli crumples onto her knees. Thank you Matarani, she prays.

A moment later, Siddhant returns empty handed. "bas***d got away," he mutters angrily.

"You okay?" he asks in concern as he helps her up.

"Haan," she gasps.

"Come on," he says quietly, "I'll get you home."

He helps her into the car and gets behind the wheel.

"Seatbelt," he reminds her in a low voice.

She glowers at him before putting it on.

Couple of silent minutes into their ride home, Siddhant finally decides to confront her.

"You're okay na?" he asks her quietly.

"I'm okay yaar," she replies weakly, "don't worry."

She smiles at him, touched by his care and concern. Yes, she thinks, expose your soft self and bury the macho man image, Siddhant.

"What were you doing there anyway?" he begins seriously.

She glances at him before replying, "I was on a call."

"What?" he snaps in disbelief, "on a call? Why did you have to go there to make a call?"

"I didn't," she replies quietly, "I just got there."

"What do you mean you just got there?" he growls, "you were in a trance or what?"

"No yaar," she laughs, "I wasn't in a trance for your kind information. You see, I have this problem of being absentminded when on a call. I do all sorts of things like scribbling on papers, snipping with scissors and walking for miles without even realizing it!"

"What?" Siddhant is annoyed and wonderstruck, "Roli! You're crazy! How can you be so careless?"

"I wasn't being careless," she grins sheepishly.

"And senseless!" he barks.

"Oofff!" she hisses, "stop it yaar!"

"Roli!" he snarls, "you are the ultimate! Do you realize how dangerous it is? Do you realize what could have happened? You could have become another victim!"

"Abhey yaar! Can you just calm down?" she asks.

"Calm down?" he replies angrily, "you want me to calm down? Roli! How can you take things so easily? What if something happened to you? Huh?"

"Nothing will happen rey," she tries to pacify him, "I can handle myself."

"Really?" he snaps, "it didn't look so when I saw you back there!"

"Now stop barking at me," she snaps, "and concentrate on the road!"

"Don't tell me what to do!" he says through clenched teeth.

"Don't tell me what to do either!!!" she snaps.

He pulls the car away from the road and stops the engine. He's hopping mad now!

"Why do you have to be so arrogant yaar?" he says in a raised voice.

"Actually what is your problem?" she snaps back, "it's my life! Anything could happen to me! Why do you care?"

"I do care yaar!!!" he yells, "I DO care about you!"

Roli just looks deep into his eyes for a while. She can see his true self emerging from within.

Siddhant is breathless with anger as he glowers into her eyes. Why's she looking at me like this, he wonders, it's almost as if she's trying to see right through me. Suddenly, he feels so insecure. To his horror, she says something he never wanted to hear.

"I know..." She says quietly.
