UNDER THE SKY LANTERNS - PART 4
An original story by Archana Vinod
OUT ON THE STREETS - MORNING
Roli doesn't see the car back up from behind her!
THUD!!! It knocks her down! But it still doesn't stop! It keeps coming at her!
She shrieks as the tires roll in closer to her torso! The driver doesn't see her!
A couple of people on the streets notice the accident' that is about to happen!
"Oye!" "Hey" Couple of them call out, but the driver doesn't hear!
Roli is petrified! The tires close in! Closer... closer... closer...
She quickly rolls away from the line of target and BANGS her fist on the car's trunk.
SCREEECH!!! The driver brakes hard! Even before he can step out, she begins to scream her lungs out.
"What the hell!" she rages, "are you crazy? Bloody idiot!"
The driver steps out and walks over to her. "I'm sorry," he begins, "I didn't""
"Are you blind?" she yells, "where the -"
She stops abruptly as she notices who the driver is. It's Siddhant! He is equally surprised!
"You?" he asks, surprised.
"It was you?" she snaps in disbelief.
Isn't this the crazy elevator girl, he thinks.
"I should have known!" she barks, "you almost killed me! Ran over me! Do you know that you weirdo?"
"I'm sorry," he apologizes, "I swear I didn't see you."
"Oh puh-lease!!!" she snaps, "Don't give me that crap! How could you not have seen me? Don't you have rear view mirrors?"
Siddhant is quiet as he notices people stand on and watch the commotion.
"I asked you a question!" she roars.
"Yes," he replies as he becomes more and more conscious by the second.
"Do you have a stiff neck?" she snarls.
"No," he replies.
"Do you have an eye sight problem?" she questions.
"No," he replies in frustration.
"Then?" she shouts, "what the hell is your problem? How come you didn't see me? Were you dreaming? At least you must have heard me get knocked down!"
"No," he replies quietly.
"Then what kind of a driver are you?" she shrieks, "do you even have a license?"
"Yes," he replies, "but I swear I didn't see you."
"You made me late for work!" she yells, "do you know that?"
"I'm very sorry," he replies as he tries to keep his cool, "it wasn't on purpose, I swear. I'm sorry, please."
"Kya sorry?" she fumes, "if you ran over me, then? What would have happened to me?"
"I'm sorry," he repeats, "I'm very-very sorry." He has no clue on how to handle this situation other than say sorry'. On top of that, it's embarrassing to have people gloat at them like that. He's desperate for this scuffle to end.
"Stop it yaar!" she snaps, "how do you go on at it with your sorry-sorry'? Don't drive me mad! Do you really think that you can get away with it? I'm calling the police!!!"
Siddhant has had enough. "See listen," he begins angrily, "I told you that it was an accident. I even apologized. Now keep your voice down!"
Roli is furious at having been challenged! She knocks his hand off her face. "Don't you dare point your finger at me," she steams, "you should be ashamed of your attitude!"
"Hello!" snaps Siddhant, "look who's talking. If you noticed, you were standing in a parking zone. Were you even in your senses?"
His words stun her for a moment. Now that he told her, she realizes that he's right. She was standing in a parking zone after all! But she's not ready to accept her mistake.
"So what?" she snaps, "I was in a parking zone. Not a parking lot! There are plenty of people around! Parking your dabba car in a parking zone doesn't mean that you can pull out in any manner you like! You have to look around!"
"Oye!" he points at her face again, "firstly, you committed a blunder! On top of that, you're trying to justify yourself!"
She knocks his hand off again. "I said DON'T point your finger at me dammit!"
Siddhant is super angry now! He is ready to bash her to the ground! "You expect motorists to be extra cautious while you roam around senselessly? Who do you think you are? The queen of Jhansi?"
His finger is at her face again.
"I said OFF- MY - FACE!!!" She screams and pushes his hand out of her way.
"Don't touch me," he fumes, "get it? Don't TOUCH ME!!"
"You!!!" she screams, "Are you threatening me? How dare you threaten me?"
By now, a couple of bystanders interfere and pull them apart. They are forced to settle their trifle and get on with it!
Roli manages to get an auto after all this! She's still mad with rage! Her head is pounding! Her vision is a complete blur! Such a careless, arrogant idiot!!! He made me late on my first day! I swear I'll kill him if I see him again!
TECHSEARCH CONSULTANTS - MUCH LATER
Roli finally makes it! She dashes into the building's elevator and gets to the third floor.
Even before the doors of the elevator can slide open, she bolts out...
... And in to her office!
To her dismay, she finds her new boss Vikrant in the glass enclosed conference room. He's not alone. He has a team of five seated around him.
Vikrant notices Roli come in through the door and waves at her to come over.
Her chest is thumping like crazy as she moves in to the conference room. Hey Matarani, she thinks, this is so embarrassing! How will I explain myself? Please... please...
"Good morning Roli! Late on the first day," Vikrant smiles warmly as she comes in, "what happened?"
Roli opens her mouth to reply but stops midway as she notices one of the guys on the team. It's Siddhant!!!

CONFERENCE ROOM - MORNING
Roli just stands there, dumbfounded. What is this guy doing here, she wonders.
Siddhant too gapes at her. No ways! She can't be working here!
Vikrant looks back and forth at the duo. "Looks like you two know each other," he remarks.
The both of them snap out of their trance.
"What man, Siddhant?" he looks over at Siddhant this time, "what's the catch?"
Siddhant looks very uncomfortable.
"Roli?" Vikrant has her attention now, "what happened? Why're you late?"
"Actually Vikrantji," she begins.
"Don't be standing there," smiles Vikrant, "get in! Get in! Just be seated."
"Actually Vikrantji," she goes at it again as she moves in, "I met with an accident this morning."
"What!" Vikrant is shocked, "you've got to be kidding! How did this happen?"
Roli looks over at Siddhant. He stares at her for a moment before looking away.
"I was waiting for an auto," she begins, "when this car wala backed up into me."
"What do you mean?" he asks furiously, "he just backed up in to you like that?"
"Haan ji," she replies.
Vikrant hisses in concern. "What an idiot! I wonder which part of their body they use for vision."
Siddhant fidgets in his seat a bit. Idiot? Which part of the body?
"Such guys should just be kicked below the belt," he exclaims, "I would seriously do it!"
Siddhant fidgets more. Kick below the belt?
Roli smothers a smirk. That would be so fun to watch! And at this point of time, he deserves it!
"And are you alright?" he asks her, concerned.
"Thankfully yes," replies Roli, "I almost got run over, though."
"Be extra careful next time," suggests Vikrant, "people are senseless nowadays. Anything could happen."
Roli cringes at the word senseless.' Siddhant on the other hand, smirks.
Roli settles down with the team.
"Okay guys," begins Vikrant, "welcome to Techsearch. As you already know, we have three teams at present. The construction & engineering team, banking & finance, IT & telecommunications. Your team, FMCG, will be the latest to our addition."
The new recruits hang on to every word.
"Bhanupriya will be your team leader," he continues, "the rest of you, Remo, Siddhant, Roli and Vimla will work under her as recruiters."
MUCH LATER
The new team exits the conference room and head to their work stations after their first session.
Roli settles down at her new table. She is super excited to start off and spins on her new chair to take a look at her surroundings. The office is so white and inviting! Everything is up to the mark with the best equipments and facilities. I love this place already, she thinks, much better than the last place!
"Alright guys," begins Bhanupriya, a kind looking lady in her mid 30's, "let's get started. Your main task as of now will be to get new accounts. Let's do it!"
Roli gets on with her new task. She utters a word of prayer before she begins.
Just then, she notices her enemy Siddhant come in with a cup of coffee.
He glares at her before plopping into the empty chair at Roli's neighbouring work station.
Hey Matarani, she thinks anxiously; now I have to sit near this guy also? And see his stupid arrogant face every day! Every hour! Oof! How will I bear this?
"When you're done," says Bhanupriya, "you guys can merge with your neighbouring team members and work out a presentation. Good luck!"
"Hi," says a heavy but gentle voice from behind Roli. She turns around. It's her new colleague, Remo. He seems to be in his early 30's and is tall, stocky and heavily muscular. "I'm Remo."
"Hi," smiles Roli and shakes hands, "Roli."
"First job?" he asks.
"Not really," she replies, "second."
"Oh wonderful," he replies, "me too. But I was in the hotel industry before."
"Oh really?" she smiles curiously, "then how did you land up here?"
"Well," he smiles, "it's obvious. Better pay, manageable timings. "
A WHILE LATER
Roli manages to get hold of one new client. She is exhilarated. She rushes over to the printer to print out a business presentation.
As she waits at the printer, she notices Siddhant walk over to his desk with another cup of coffee. She nods her head, annoyed. This guy has no other job other than drink coffee all day!
After she gets done, she gets back to her desk and searches for the stapler. But doesn't find it! Instead, she finds one on Siddhant's desk.
"Ermm," she begins uncomfortably.
Siddhant glares at her and looks away.
"Can I borrow your stapler for a moment?" she asks.
"Sure," he mutters.
She reaches over to get the stapler, but accidentally KNOCKS over the cup of coffee.
To her horror, the steaming coffee spills, flows all over the desk and straight onto Siddhant's lap!

THE OFFICE - MORNING
The super hot coffee soaks and scalds Siddhant's lap!
He springs onto his feet in intense agony!
"Awwooofff! Shiiit!"
He grabs whatever he can - Handkerchief! Tissue! Paper! He is blind with pain as he dabs furiously all over his lap!
Roli shrugs, hisses and bites her tongue. "Sorry," she says quietly, "it was an accident!"
Siddhant is mad with pain and rage. He mops up his pants as he struggles to stand still.
Remo and Vimla notices this.
Vilma cringes. "Ooofff!!!"
"Are you alright buddy?" asks Remo, concerned.
Siddhant can't even talk! His eyes and face are red in anguish!
"Are you okay?" asks Roli, a bit scared.
"No!" he snaps through clenched teeth, "I'm not okay!!!"
"I'm sorry," she says in a low voice, "it was an accident. Honest!"
"Accident?" he barks in a loud voice, "ACCIDENT??!!"
Roli is stunned and infuriated at his angry outburst.
"You call this an accident?" he trembles in extreme pain and distress. "Tell me one thing seriously, are you on drugs?"
"What?" she gasps, insulted by his question, "what do you mean?"
"How else can you be so senseless?" he hollers, "I've never seen someone as senseless as you!"
"Oye hello," she waves her hand at his face, "enough! Don't cross the line. I told you it was an accident. I even apologized, okay? Now stop barking and get on with your life."
Siddhant is infuriated! "And on top of that she's arrogant!" he snarls.
But Roli doesn't bother to respond. She just borrows Siddhant's stapler and pins up the print outs.
"Hey," he growls, "keep it back here! That's my stapler! If you need a stapler, go and find one!"
But Roli is in no mood for crap. She simply pins the paper and replaces the stapler. "Save your breath," she replies coolly, "I'm not running away with it. I'm giving it back!"
She slams the stapler on to his desk, just to make her message loud and clear.
"Here it is", "she snarls, "your stapler! Now you can go on and stuff it up your-"
But before Roli can complete, Vikrant comes out of his cabin.
"What's happening?" he looks around and smiles. "Any problem?"
Roli settles down with her presentation.
Vikrant walks over to his new team and notices the wet patch on Siddhant's lap.
"What man," grins Vikrant, "even after all these years you haven't learnt to control yourself?"
"No," he smiles as he tries to hide his embarrassment, "I mean - it's coffee. Got spilled over."
"Damn!" nods Vikrant, "hope you didn't bake yourself!"
"No, it's okay," Siddhant tries to appear cheerful, "I'll be fine."
Vikrant lands a couple of encouraging pats on Siddhant's back and moves through the aisles. "Great," he says in high spirits.
"Good news," says Bhanupriya as Vikrant gets closer, "Roli has set up a business meeting for today with Om Enterprises."
"Om Enterprises? Kya baat hai Roli!" exclaims Vikrant happily, "first day itself started huh? Good! Good! Very good! Excellent!"
"Thank you," she smiles shyly.
"So I was planning to leave with Roli in some time," says Bhanupriya.
"No," replies Vikrant, "I need you for some urgent work today Bhanu. Let her pair up with Siddhant."
BOING! Siddhant and Roli look up in utter shock!
"When's the meeting?" asks Vikrant.
"In around an hour and a half," replies Roli in a haphazardly fashion.
"Great then," says Vikrant crisply, "you guys can move now itself."
Siddhant is very disturbed. After all this, I have to go out for a presentation with her too? Grrr...
"It'll also give you a chance to change," says Vikrant as he glances over at Siddhant, "I believe you live quite close by."
"Yeah," he replies drearily.
"The bonus point is that he has a car," chips in Bhanupriya, "which makes things easier."
"Excellent," Vikrant bounces on his toes, "all the best! Get going then!"
Roli and Siddhant prepare to leave for their first business presentation.
Siddhant is pissed off, big time! I don't believe this; he thinks irritably, why can't they send her with Remo or Vimla? Why me??! Hey Uparwaale!
Roli is as irritated. Hey Matarani, she thinks, I can't stand him already! Now I have to go on a presentation with him too? Uff!
Roli checks her file before leaving. Presentation, contract, credentials etc. All good.
Siddhant glances over at her with a let's get going' look on his face. He doesn't wait for her to respond. He just walks out!
She too follows suit.
