Taking blame for...a mother

Saras takes blame for Yash killing a cow because he did not want Yash to swear falsely on his mother. Saras knows how precious a mother is and it is usually considered that if you swear falsely on anyone calamity will fall on them. Hence no one falsely takes oath on his mother. Saras knows this and value of a mother hence takes blame for the cow's death on behalf of Yash. Saras not only loves his mother very much but respects and cares for all others mothers too although he knows Yash and his mother like him only because he is a rich father's son and from foreign. That is a rare quality. This is an 18th century novel and at that time killing a cow was considered a very big crime. How do you think villagers will punish Saras?

But I too read in the spoiler, it didn't say he will go to jail it just says Kumud will bail him out. It could be implying that she will bail him out of the situation. I don't think they will send him to jail because according to the villagers or Panchayat that punishment wouldn't be harsh enough. In villages people mostly like to solve these type of problems in the Panchayat. They find it as an insult if the police enters their village.
