This is not anything like Sarabhai v/s Sarabhai. But I just wanted to write this after watching the season 2. Apologies in advance if it is too melodramatic or filmy or not upto the mark.Constructive criticism is welcome !
SaNisha OS: Crazily Mine
"Haini! Kitni dubli hogayi hai... her mother spoke loudly so much so that Monisha could hear her directly at her house without the Tablet. Monisha smiled widely as she found her mother admiring the tablet at the other end like a child admiring the statues at the Museum. "Haina ! Kamal ki cheez! Monisha asked her mother excitedly as she went about the kitchen to prepare dinner for herself. She had decided it would be a simple rajma chawal. Cooking was always a boring task and cooking for self was something Monisha absolutely loathed. Arnab was away on a football camp for about 3 weeks. Sahil was away on a Medical Conference for 3 days.
"Puttar, Kya kar rahi hai tu?
"Ma, raat ka khana bana rahi hoon. Rajma Chawal. Monisha smiled like a 5 year old kid.
"Badiya Puttar. Her mother smiled contently looking at her daughter go about in that huge kitchen making Rajma Chawal. She had been apprehensive when Monisha told her that she wanted to marry Sahil. She wasn't sure if their lifestyles and thought processes would match. But her daughter had assured her that she would not allow anything to go to her head and promised to get married only if she had approved. She smiled gladly and proudly at how her daughter had managed to stay put and not changed drastically as she had feared. She proudly touched tablet her daughter had gifted her and then suddenly wondered how much did it cost.
"Puttar! How much does this cost? How did you buy this? she asked anxiously.
Monisha smiled at how cautious her mother was still about money matters. Sahil entered the house to find it casually closed and locked. When was she going to realise the importance of safety? , he wondered. Just as he was about to call her, he heard her cheerful voice say,
"Ma, Sahil gives me allowance for shopping and I had saved that up to buy to the tablet and don't you worry it's not that expensive as it looks! I got it from the Great Indian Sale from Amazon! Monisha replied winking with an assuringly smile as she switched of the induction stove and moved to her bedroom with the tablet.
"Puttar, you remember what I taught you right! A Penny saved...
"Is a penny earned.Monisha finished. "I won't let history repeat, I won't let it happen to Sahil and Arnab, Ma. Monisha finished softly. Her mother smiled "I know you won't let it happen. Go and have your dinner before it gets cold.
"Good Night Ma! Take Care. Monisha blew a soft kiss to her mother before ending the call. Sahil realised that he had never asked Monisha about her childhood in all these years of marriage and she had never brought up the topic too. He decided to ask her about it today during dinner.
"Sahil! When did you come?
"When you were speaking to your mother. He spoke softly. "By the way, you are a day early home. How come? she asked him surprised. "The conference was over by today morning so here I am back home. Can we continue the Q&A later? I am famished. Sahil patted his stomach. "Arey haan she hit her forehead feeling stupid and they moved to the kitchen to get their dinner. Sahil decided that they should sit today on the couch and have their dinner comfortably.
Monisha was chewing her rajma chawal and incessantly asking questions about the conference, his stay, the places he went to, and the people he met. Sahil replied patiently to all her questions and then took his chance, "Monisha, you have never spoken about your childhood. I mean you have heard the tales from Mom and Dad like how Roshesh, Sonia and I were as kids. Monisha knew Sahil better than this; he wanted to ask her something else but was hesitant. "Sahil, are you sure that this is what you want to ask me now? "I mean sort of, but like ...you know...
"Sahil, if you don't ask how will I know and stop running the spoon in circles on the plate, the design will peel off. She spoke a tad bit annoyed about the impending damage to her ceramic plates. "Monisha, I didn't mean to eavesdrop but you told your mother that you won't let it happen to me or Arnab. It's okay...okay if you don't want to talk about it. He spoke softly and hesitantly as always. Sahil was sensitive to others feelings Monisha loved this the most about him. Monisha shook her head and spoke with conviction "Sahil, I never spoke about my childhood because the topic never came up! It is not a secret or something. Of course you can ask me anything you want to know. Now that you have asked, let me tell you, my family was a typical traditional Punjabi family rich and into agriculture. Everything was fine until one day we lost everything. My father had gambled away everything and we were left without a shelter in a day's time. I was twelve. We had saved absolutely nothing. My mother started stitching clothes for a living. My father did odd errands to keep the family fed. I decided to drop out of school when I was seventeen because my parents could not provide education for all the four of us. So I quit school and started doing odd errands to support my brothers' education and provide enough food for them. There have been days when we had nothing but a few glasses of water to fill our stomachs. Monisha spoke with a shrug and moved to keep the dishes at the sink.
Sahil was at her side to listen to her as she spoke. "I learned tailoring, mother used to cook and I used deliver food at customer's house. Life went on and then father started his truck business which brought good revenue home. My brothers had also completed their education and had hefty paying jobs. And then I found you. She ended with a smile as she moved to do the dishes.
Sahil had never thought that his wife would have gone through such a hard childhood and he now understood her tendency to save. He had always liked her simplicity but now he had profound respect for her as he heard her speak of her childhood with such ease. She knew the value of everything she possessed. The perils of her childhood had made her what she was and weird or not, he knew that he loved everything about her.
"That's so courageous of you. You know what I don't know if anyone has told you this, you are an amazing person.
Monisha dismissed him lightly with a "Hatt! as she waved her hand off.
"Sachchi...
Sahil hugged her "Ab toh yakeen ho raha hai na! and rested his head on her shoulder. "Arey, gudgudi ho rahi hai! she unsuccessfully tried to push him away. "Aise kya? Sahil further tickled Monisha and the laughter continued like always in the Sarabhai Household.
