Men are back!

Male protagonists are once again getting more screen space on prime time telly soaps. Is this trend here for keeps Ahmedabad Times finds out about the shift in focus

Shruti Jambhekar

Finally its happening! A new male order is calling the shots on prime time television shows. After years of playing second fiddle to the bahus and betiyaans in the kitchen dramas, general entertainment channels have prominent male protagonists in the lime light, taking centre stage in the telly shows story line. While the 15-year-old crime thriller CID was the only one with four male leads running the show, now more names have joined the fray.Ronit Roy (Adaalat),Ram Kapoor (Bade Achche Lagte Hain),Vishal Karwal (Dwarkadheesh),Saheer Sheikh (Navya),Neil Bhatt (Gulaal),Sameer Soni (Parichay),Shiv Subramanium (Mukti Bandhan) and Sushant Singh Rajput (Pavitra Rishta) have men getting equal screen space and are no more standing in the frame as the supportive husband/boyfriend.So what made this change possible at this juncture
Rajita Sharma, producer of Ram Milaye Jodi, who is coming up with a daily soap revolving around two brothers says,The amount of emphasis being given to the male characters largely depends on the concept and the storyline. At the end of the day though, relationships are a crucial part of our lives,as well as our shows,so no show can revolve around one character, but depending on the ongoing track the focus given to a character may vary. Ravindra Gautam, whos directing Parichay feels,Men are definitely watching more television now.The post 10 pm time band has a lot of male viewers,so,we as story makers are focusing on shows with significant male characters. Some showmakers feel it is not a new move and male characters have had their share of importance anyway.Producer Rajan Shahi says,Strong male protagonists always existed on TV,but the perception has changed, and its a healthy trend. The audience likes stories they can relate to.The percentage of male viewers has also definitely increased,so the male leads get more space in promos/airtime. Producer Siddharth Tewary too, shares the same view,In family soaps and love stories male protagonists are important and even female viewers like to see men in the lead. What do actors feel about their new prominence Actor Karan Mehra feels,Its feels good to have such a meaty role in Yeh Ristha Kya Kehlata Hai.While TV is a women dominated medium, but times have changed.I have come across people from younger generation who relate to my character and love the show. Vishal Karwal whos essaying the lead role in Dwarkadheesh says,Men are getting bigger and better roles in TV shows and thats a welcome change. Of course TRPs will ultimately decide whether the male superstars have made their way into the audiences hearts or not, because the hand that weilds the remote is one that has the final say in a l m o s t everything.shruti.jambhekar @timesgroup.com

I liked what Rajan ji said highlighted in bold..

Somewhere post leap had great focus on Anmol's life and Apurva did a fabulous job.. I just hope to see him back in a stronger role like Anmol with a lot of depth..and post leap was amazing with great TRP's and they kept with Anmol's character and the different emotions he gave 👏👏

Male Protagonists should get great stories too and stories which fit them and actors who can take this challenge will defiantly be appreciated by audience. 👏👏

Yes Rozy I agree..

I have always wanted that Men do get equal focus in shows, I have seen Apurva's character in different avataars, and enjoyed all of them , Armaan, DPS, Shekhar and my latest crush Anmol,
If character are well etched out the male protagonists stands out and it should,

Even with Anmol, we traveled through his inner emotions so well
The frustration, the anxiety, the restlessness, the talks with the kids, the anger, the longing , well shown

Too bad they axed the show which was doing well, Yes Anmol should be back as he did wish to make his appearance for the role of Anmol for 1 1/2 years,

30 minutes of a male protagonist like Anmol wud be a treat with a few sides with ohers for me, Yes focus on a male protagonist in a show is very important,

As the article says, women watch the serials, but now men also watch after 10 pm , so many shows which have focus on male protagonists are also going up the recognition ladder..

Anmol needs to be back with Apurva truly an awesome etched character added to the Bidaaii kitty .. LOads of flavor , would want to explore more...

Thanks for posting this article Shanti.😊

I am also waiting so anxiously for apurva's return as anmol with his ragini.😍

If they continue bidaai 2 from the last scene where they left, we can get more of wonderful story😍 ,angini's beautiful love for each other,😍 their second child .😍

When so many actors are back on screen ,why is that apurva taking so much of time? 😔Maybe he selects best story and a wonderful character to showcase his talent.😊

But anyhow i want him with his ragini in bidaai 2. I am missing them so much.😭

Yes Krithika ...

I want to know what he is doing.. He has not taken up any show, he loved his character Anmol, enjoyed every bit of it , Uff they axed the show when it was at its peak, I hope Starplus keeps its word and bring it back with teh climax open end they had , Definatly Apurva would be a treat to watch with Parul as Ragini and continuation ...
Lets hope it happens and we get more of Anmol's journey...with Ragini 😳

We have enough FF's to support Male Protagonists and his role of Anmol , So creatives can get a lot of content from us and tweak it a add their flavors to it 😊

Mr. Agnihotri is just testing our patience,😆 Well male protagonist you were awesome in Bidaaii , hope you are back soon .. and as Anmol We are missing Angini a lot and we need them back.

anmol was super example of male dominance as per character sketching was concerned...as loads of galis were given to apu saying he was replacing ranvir in ragini's life etc etc etc...but in show rajan had replaced sadhna's character's selfless aspect with anmol...he was the protagonist post leap as sadhna was before...so i agree with what he says about the male trends...also we have such Good actors ..it Will be sheer waste to waste their talent in supportive roles.
i hope apu is back with male based role

Interesting article, Anmol 's character was well focused in Bidaaii and the many changes which he went through with it.
I wish they could show more of his relationship, no doubt he was excellent with the kids Tammy and Khushi , but they were just developing the relationship, which he treasured as a friend and wanted to move on as a companion and a wife in Ragini, He was always there to be with her, and he shared her sorrows ,
I hope to see more of Anmol and his character , and focus on his and ragini's relationship if its possible when Bidaaii returns.

Male protagonists have great depth and when focused they are liked by the audiences

The treads is good hope Apurva is seen back again in such roles soon miss him loads
