I must say that I agree completely with what the topic starter has to say.

Perhaps that is one of the reasons I don't like watching serials because of the stereo types and falsehoods portrayed and I feel that it is a willful attempt to mislead the naive audience into thinking that western thought, culture and it's people are bad stuff whereas everything Indian is good. We all know that is far from true.

I have been living and working in the United States for several years and have never been treated poorly. Yes the laws are very strictly enforced here but everybody is treated the same and I respect that. I am sure that there are isolated incidences but they aren't the norm. The same goes for India as well.

It would be refreshing if serials showed both sides of the story rather than painting the west in tainted colors all the time.

I can say plenty more but I will stop here.

Thank you.

Simi

simi i agree with u...i thought to give his serial a try but the way thy showed evrything good abt india and bad abt u.s. was too much...its like waha ke sare log bure aur india...main sab acche...ND USING THE DIALOG GORI CHAMDI KE LOG was bit racist to me...its not good to potrait a bad image abt other country when we knw what is in reality going in india...i myself live in india...but i dont judge people in other country...thy r also people just like us...thy have same mother father family love...that we have...so i think cvs dont need to show them as evil...or alien

Thanks guys for all the likes!! I have watched a few more episodes because I am a fan of Jay Soni and though I like the concept, this whole saga about how Indians are so Mahaan and everyone else is the opposite is annoying me,It is high time we as Indians look at our own faults for a change and stop pointing fingers at others.Instead of copying how Americans dress, why can't we copy on how they keep their streets clean and appreciate it? We blame the western places for all their wrong values. When will we start looking at ourselves and changing ourselves as a society? To add to this,we have these serials which a lot of people in India watch and the message is totally wrong-We are perfect and everything else about the others is totally wrong? When will we stop living in our past glory??An awakening is required.Yes,India was MAHAAN but a LONG time ago!! India cannot be proud of a lot of things happening today. The serial does not reflect the current times in India. It is sad but true.

In US often people are harassed because of being an Asian
and I think its kind of natural because of the immigrant pressure there
I have faced too many problems in US while going for the first time but I think that was my fault
but I have faced even more problems while travelling inside India..
may be that is because I have travelled more over here than anywhere else..
anyways whatever is shown in the show is only a symbolic gesture..
the CVs tried to symbolise the 'tough world' with all this...
bcoz there are onbly few ppl who take serials seriously...

you are right
in India showbiz is always connected to entertainment
they tend to forget the social role they have to play!

The topic maker and other members, have made valid points...Regarding what really happens in the US...This is not a discussion on wether people take shows seriously or not...
But to represent another country and it's people falsely is irresponsible and wrong...Western media are not allowed to take liberties, with how they portray India or people from the Indian subcontinent...They are also bound by the law...
No country is perfect and everyone's experience of traveling in India and abroard is different...Showing the reality might actually be alot more entertaining...

Neither am I or Jalis trying to justify what it is
western media is not allowed to take liberties but comments about Lotus Temple and other such Indian aspects are not a rare occurence in the west either.
As you said no country is perfect similarly the west is also not perfect
its not that they dont tend to show other countries in dark and glorify their own
US UK and all countries do it once upon a point of time but the fact is they are a lot more liberal in general
similarly its not that Indians also dont value and respect the west
they also do it but sometimes dramatic exaggerations become a compulsion
travelling might have different experiences but those experiences are very significant bcoz as a person you only remember how good or bad your experience is.. you dont remember what you have read about the country or what its pros and cons are...
and whether people take shows seriously or not is a very important aspect related to this discussion
In India even in print and tv ads companies can say anything and everything simply bcoz ppl dont take ads seriously
it is a tendency over here to portray false things bcoz you know at the end of the day no one is going to drag you to court..
its a commonpsychology...
bcoz laws and regulations here are not even 1% of that of the west

Thank you all for liking my post!!! Huggsss!! Finally something non Shanak. LOL

And @Ankita: Nice to see you after a looong time my dear!

I just wanted to make a point. I have nothing against anybody or any particular post.

We all should discuss these things more often because Television, cinema and media in general are major education tools and nobody can negate that. Why don't they show our protagonists drinking, smoking or doing drugs? Because the producers know that the viewers will get influenced by them. Why show a bad saas being reformed by a good bahu? Why do they show widow remarriage or for that matter women standing against abusive men? There is a social message behind everything.

Many people (please don't be surprised) take whatever is shown on television as Gospel and ape them in their own personal lives. There are countless examples. All we have to do is look around us.

We as responsible citizens of the world should take a stand against any kind of misinformation shown on the media and protest against them. Isn't it becoming kind of stale to see foreigners in loud fake accents being depicted as big imposing baton wielding goons who are bent upon mistreating us poor hapless Asians who btw have done nothing wrong? When are we going to get a new take on things? Why can't we have a revolutionary TV serial which is not afraid to show us things the way they really are---be it good are bad?

And as May said showing reality might be more entertaining and help jack up the all important TRPS!!! :D
